Some strange message saying that IPad/iPhone are separate purchases. Wonder if that's accurate. I'm not interested, but curious to know if that's in deed the case.

Yeah, I’ve never seen this one before but in the description it says check out the review on the sound tester so I guess Doug has a video up on it.

This appears to be a 15 year old app, so it may be one of his very early videos!

Speaking of old Soundtest Room videos… I noticed the early ones had Jakob Haq as part of it too, along with a third guy I don’t recognize. Who is/was that other guy?

Yea it started as a trio. However I’m not sure who that other 3rd member used to be…? I don’t remember the 3rd person being in the videos much, if at all, only in the image they used to show in the video. maybe a behind the scenes partner, can’t remember. It’s been a long time since that first iteration of the STR, and I think the third member moved onto something else entirely, but could be wrong…

    Colin Powell?

No, it was someone called a Colin but it wasn’t me in the Sound Test Room. I just made music with Doug.

I have it and have fiddled around with it but it didn’t click with me off the bat. I’ve by no means tested it beyond loading it a few times, but something like Velocity Keyboard instantly became a default for ease of use, great design, customization, etc.

I find it crashy as hell. In fact I took it out again just now to have a look at it and managed to crash it within a minute. In terms of controllers, I don’t have one I’d regard as my ‘main’ one. For non-mpe stuff I like Xequence AU Keys, Xequence AU Pads is also good for percussion. Salome as an MPE drone synth controller. Midi Poly Grid has some great features (but isn’t AUv3). Velocity Keyboard also useful but is broken in iPadOS26. Geoshred also useful as an MPE controller, though gets pretty complicated if you dive in. I used to use KB-1, but I prefer these alternatives now. Oh, there’s also Woodtroller though I haven’t really checked that one out properly.

  • Since I already have ChordPolyPad and StepPolyArp the bundle was only $2 so I impulse bought them. What exactly are QuantiChord and MusicMath?

I actually just got PolyArp last week and think it’s great. ChordPolyPad is one of my favorite apps. I load it up all the time and it’s incredibly versatile. The bundle is a great deal for those two.

Agreed on GeoShred. I find the preset saving to be fairly confusing as well - I’ve made multiple controller layouts that get overwritten or accidentally botched. But it’s great in terms of customizable and Moforte has a large library of tutorials.

Not AUv3 but TouchScaper is a favorite of mine. Not sure about it being MPE or not - I’ve had a hard time getting confirmation on that. @Rob_Jackson_Music can you confirm one way or the other?

A lot of people seem to like Animoog as an MPE controller. Thereminator 2 and Trooper have a fun MPE controller as well.

Hi, and thanks. No I wouldn't say touchscaper was a fully-fledged MPE controller. It can send poly / channel aftertouch on a per-note basis, but unfortunately, that's misleadingly labelled as MPE in the app. :#

Pianoscaper and guitarscaper 2 my all time favorites! These 2 apps alone reduced my stress so much when I used to work full time! Allowed me to rest in my lunch time nap and returned refreshed to my office! I highly recommend these apps with all my heart!

I’m just adding this to try to put an end to the confusion. It was a Colin Swinney. There’s still an old YouTube channel of his “thesoundtestroomUS” visible on YouTube which hasn’t been updated for 10 years. Doug explained the situation of the trio splitting up in a thread on here in June 2020, but I don’t want to quote it verbatim now out of deference to Doug. Suffice to say that Doug said that Mr Swinney felt he no longer wanted to continue “for personal reasons”. Hopefully this satisfies @Fear2Stop ’s curiosity😊.
