DynaBit by Caelum Audio - Released

Hi All,

Long time no see! Gabriel and I have been busy working on a whole load of new stuff and we thought it was about time we started showing the world some of it. One of the things we have been working on is DynaBit!

DynaBit came out of the idea that bit crushing can have a (sometimes) unwanted tendency to ruin the dynamics of audio. We wanted that same nasty sound but with the dynamic range of a full orchestra. In the bit crush section you can use "Range Boost" to boost your quiet signals to take advantage of each available amplitude within the bit and then use "Envelope" to restore some or all of your dynamics whilst retaining that crunchy sound we love.

This algorithm then spiralled into an experimentation into digital nastiness with sample rate stuff and glitchy beat repeats!

Please give it a go and let us know how you get on. I would be particularly interested in finding out if anyone has any problems with the visualiser; we had a sporadic issue where it wouldn't display but wasn't consistently repeatable. The issue hasn't resurfaced in a while but without knowing how to force the bug to happen it's difficult to prove it has gone!

Here is the TestFlight link: https://testflight.apple.com/join/stpSNDWb

Thank you!
David

Sorry, might have accidentally removed someone while updating the app build. Please add yourself back!

p.s. whoever that was, it was an old version of the app you had so please update!

    Super cool guys!

A little bit difficult to quickly and accurately dial in low values on knobs like Number Repeats. Try logarithmic scaling maybe?

Would love to see an option for an unsynced repeat time in Hz!

  • Looks cool

  • I'd been wondering when the next Caelum Audio plugin would arrive.

    Yeah, been too long!

  • If anyone has the time and can post a few examples of what kind of sounds are achievable with this, please post... as long as you have Caelum Audio's approval, of course.

  • Hey @CaelumAudio this great! Love this kind of plugin for adding texture/glitches to audio. Thanks for including randomisers also.

After playing with this for a while would love to see:

    • Ability to trigger repeats from incoming audio - hopefully the threshold control would work with this too to determine the triggering volume threshold
    • A separate filter in the section repeats section
    • Ability to modulate Repeat Time
    • Envelope follower as modulation source

Also, not sure what the Filter under Sample Rate does …

Just started some testing and I'm killing two birds with one stone using DM10 by FingerLab. Great combo so far, well FingerLab should probably just include this and have a monster DM.

  • Thx a ton @Gavinski and @CaelumAudio

Nice mangler. The data heist preset is a personal favorite.

  • I might take this for a spin later on but before I do, can the filter be assigned to be pre/post sample-rate reduction? (This would add another layer of sound-shaping options as would various down-sampling algorithms).

  • So harsh and yet so sweet, I’m definitely gonna get this when it comes out.

  • Thanks!! This looks awesome! Ima give er some tests

  • I'm playing around with this now and the Glitch presets are pretty awesome. Just running a basic Riffler riff through it and WOW. Instant fun.

  • Definitely going to test this on my next piece of Ambient to see what textures I can elicit.

  • Yes also tried it on Riffler. Sounds awesome.

  • Cross modulation options would be nice

  • @CaelumAudio This app is so close to being killer IMO. It looks great, nice randomization results, great modulation. I just feel it needs another effect in the mix to really make it lift off. I think that the bit crush/sample reduce has been covered pretty well already. Maybe adding in comb filters/resonators? Maybe something granular? Maybe stereo FX? All of the above?

    Hi all!

Sorry in the delay in coming back to answer questions/respond to feedback, I've had a crazy couple of days in moving house!

In the time that I have had however... I have been looking at starting to tweak a few things, namely the following:

    • Scaling of numbers of repeats - a very good point raised by @Gavinski that the lower numbers are probably going to be more commonly used and would benefit of being easier to select!
    • Unsynced repeat time - super easy to do so if it adds some versatility it seems like a no brainer.
    • Modulation of repeat time - Gabriel originally asked for this and I said no. Maybe at that time it wasn't possible due to how it was coded but I honestly can't remember. I've looked at it again and it seems like it should be possible so will give it a go. Gabriel now thinks I don't listen to him :D

You should be able to trigger repeats from incoming audio if you select ENV A or ENV B in the repeat section. Dial in your attack and release settings by clicking the respective buttons on the bottom modulation bar. If this isn't working for you, it could be something I need to look into!

Honestly, it would be cool to add loads of different effects into plugins. One of the downsides of this is that most online retailers just dump software into the "multi-effect" category where they have a tendency to get lost. We've tried to make this potentially fit into a "Glitch" category.

Sorry, I don't actually know what you mean by this. Do you have any examples?

    David

  • @CaelumAudio OK cheers will try the ENV setting for repeats.

    Is there a manual anywhere?

They probably won't write the manual until the app is locked and ready to sell.

  • Thank you @CaelumAudio and @Gavinski
Your new masterpiece in work came to mind via Gavinskis Patreon. I Hope I’ll find some time for intense Testing!

  • Will it be a separate release for Mac? Seeing that it was specced in TestFlight (at least initially, I haven’t checked since) I was thinking of testing it in Ableton, but it isn’t listed as able to install on the Mac version of TestFlight…

All of their software to date has been a separate purchase for desktop. Fine by me. It only bugs me when developers don't offer a version for desktop.

Thanks David. That’s helpful to understand. I still think you have some latitude to make this even more unique in the glitch category but that’s easy for me to say as I’m not doing the coding haha. There are some apps out there already that cover a lot of this ground like Electrogene and Glitchcore so it’s good to differentiate from what they offer.

Cheering you on though as it’s my type of effect 👍

  • One of the dopest bit mangler available, I really dig it. I like all of Caleum Audio's shit tho.

I feel like it's rather feature packed for its niche. If it comes to being free as is, even better. lol.

I'm sure it won't be free, but if we could have it free as is vs. more features for $$, I'm content.

I'll still buy it, just sayin'

  • Is battalion iOS next 😁😎

New version up on TestFlight now!

    Changes:

    • Modulation on the length of repeats
    • "Free Time" repeat lengths by turning off sync in beat repeat
    • Finer granularity with lower repeat numbers

    Edit: adding new screenshot!

Thanks - the finer granularity should really be added to many of the controls, not just repeat time. For example, it is almost impossible to dial in low values on free LFO speeds with even a semblance of accuracy. Make sure to test with fingers rather than a mouse, of course! Same goes for the free repeat times. Worth checking what other knobs suffer from this.
