Plugins with similar sound design options to Minifreak?

Hi guys, was wondering if anyone knows some synths that follow a similar sound design philosophy of "simple but versatile". Specifically something with loads of interesting and experimental oscilator models and lots of effects for shaping character and tone color? Ordered a minifreak but it will take a while to ship, but the thing I like about it is all the effects modules available that can change the timbre and color of a sound to make it sound almost like a different synth.

Asked chat gpt but most of its suggestions didn't really meet the "loads of oscillators and effects variety" requirement.

Tried buttersynth and while it's in the ballpark feature wise I'm not a fan of the sound which seems to always sound like buttersynth. I'm aware Factory is also somewhat similar but again, it's seems to have it's own sound character that I wasn't fond of.

Oliver Greschkes “Elastic OSC” is probably a good starting point. It’s a synth based on an emulation of the Mutable Instruments “Plaits” module. It offers 24 different oscillator configurations. “Plaits” DSP code is used in the Micro/Minifreak oscillator engine.

  • Spectrum synthesiser bundle (free) or MiRack also uses the same algo.

  • Great suggestions! These look neat, I'll check them both out

  • Terra Pro have the same algorithm…

Same algorithm as what? I do own it, but haven't used it in some time

  • I don’t know Terra, but the rest of suggestions are all based on mutable instruments plaits algo, as well as the freak.

There is an IAP called Brainz for Tera Pro that is also based on Plaits, like the Spectrum Synthesizer Bundle and Elastic OSC.
The Waves and RingZ Modules for Tera Pro could also be used as alternatives to a couple of Arturias own oscilators in the Microfreak, and I believe there is also a carplus strong module build in.
If you want a synth that can make a lot of very different kinds of sounds, it's hard to beat Tera Pro.
On the other side, its modular nature is the reason it's a little hard to work with.

I do own it and love how it sounds, somehow I forgot about it though 😄

  • If you’re on desktop there is a MiniFreak VST/AU as well: https://www.arturia.com/products/software-instruments/minifreak-v/overview

  • You could try Strokes sequencer as well, it implements Plaits along with a host of other features.

Yup aware of it, I do wish they ported it to ipad.

The same developer also made Stacks, which is a granular looper. Pretty unique and fun apps.

And you will have free access to it since it comes with the hardware!
