bitcrust by Michele Caserta (Released)

https://apps.apple.com/app/id6763228916

bitcrust is a polyphonic synthesizer built around a SID-style voice architecture: three oscillators per voice, up to twelve voices, with ring mod, hard sync, and the pulse-width behaviour that defined a generation of 8-bit sound. The DSP is an in-house, clean-room implementation written from the public MOS 6581 register map and general DSP literature — not an emulator port — so bitcrust sounds SID-adjacent without inheriting the license constraints that keep most SID-inspired tools off the major app stores.

Sonically the plugin sits between a chip synth and a modern subtractive. The voice core can still do gritty arp basses, zap leads, and 8-bit percussion, but the surrounding architecture — three LFOs, a per-voice modulation envelope, an 8-slot modulation matrix, and a 6-slot post-SID FX rack with drive, bitcrusher, tempo-synced delay, chorus, reverb, compressor, and limiter — extends it into pad, keys, and texture territory.

Universal Purchase: one price buys the Mac Standalone plus the iPad AUv3. The iPad build is a co-equal target, not a downscale — the full 113-preset factory library, all 14 themes, and the complete mod matrix / FX rack ship on both platforms.

Voice core: 12-voice polyphony, 3 oscillators per voice, SID-style triangle / saw / pulse / noise with hard sync and ring mod, per-VCO ADSR
Filter: global VCF (LP / BP / HP) with live curve, selectable 6581 / 8580 chip model, Vintage vs. Modern oscillator mode
Modulation: 3 global LFOs (7 shapes, host-sync or Hz), per-voice mod envelope, 8-slot matrix, MIDI sources (velocity, poly AT, channel AT, mod wheel, pitch bend)
FX rack: 6 slots, drag-to-reorder, per-slot bypass / mix; effect types Drive (5 modes), Bitcrusher, Delay (tempo-sync), Chorus, Reverb, Compressor, Limiter — every FX parameter is a modulation destination
MIDI: 16-step sequencer, arpeggiator (Up / Down / UpDown / Random, 6 rate divisions, octave range), MIDI Learn on every knob, note Hold
Presets: 113 factory patches across 10 groups, full-metadata save (author, description, tags), Preset Preview audition without committing, A/B snapshot compare, XML import / export
UI: 6-tab navigation, 14 themes with optional phosphor / CRT overlays, monitor strip (oscilloscope, vectorscope, FFT spectrum, 3D spectrogram, stereo field), QWERTY note typing from any tab

Mac: Standalone app with universal binary (Apple Silicon + Intel). iPad: AUv3 extension plus a Standalone for headphone jamming. A supported AUv3 host is required for in-DAW use on iPad (GarageBand, Logic Pro for iPad, AUM, Cubasis, etc.).

  • This looks cool af

  • Wow that’s a lot of synth for 2 bucks 😮

    2 squid for this? sold!

  • @Samu a penny for your thoughts, Ser?

Pretty cool and fresh take. I have several issues with the AUv3 version (i.e it works in stand alone) and those are: I can't add another effect under the effects tab, I can't add another LFO under the Modulation tab. Can't change rate under Seq/Arp tab. Seems most with a dropdown menu is broke. Anyone else have the same issues? Might be worth an email to dev.

@drewinnit let us know your thoughts

    I dig the driftwood theme

Could be handy, looking at the screenshots it looks like I would need a magnifying glass to see what is going on.

Personally I've learned how to 'build' what I need when it comes to chip-stuff using both Mela and Drambo so even though it's 'cheap' it would likely collect dust on the iPad...

  • Amiga workbench theme and the Linux version for free. That’s the spirit I like, although I wouldn’t have minded paying the two bucks for the Linux plugin…

on first blush this looks and sounds great. some issues in the AUv3 (see below)

the randomised sequencer is a cool feature. lots of colour options for the UI. modulation matrix has a huge range of targets for the souces (3 LFOs, mod env,, vel, poly AT, MW, Chan AT, PB). nice filter drive option in global settings.

getting some very nice tones from a low pitched saw

seems to lack a dotted 4 value for LFO sync rate, despite having other dotted values. dotted 4 is available for delay sync though

presets are impressive and show the various things this synth capable of - reese, pads, strings, drums, fx, texture

all presets have a nice few sentences of notes on how they were made, how to use them. you can see the effort that went into it

has a Help mode where you can get each element explained. can also toggle between three views (spectral visualisations small and to the side, or filling the entire screen, or not there at all)

yes, this is definitely broken in AUv3. works in standalone though

another issue is the knobs in the FX tab - turning them both changes the knob value AND moves the slidable FX tab up and down. not ideal. (this is in standalone)

architecture/signal flow...don't think this was shown in the App Store:

will try to film a quick demo later...i really should be working ATM :D

  • Thnx to everyone reporting the issues and their thoughts, this is definitely becoming an even more important thing than it's ever been, pls email the dev to tell him about those bugs!

  • Concur. I messaged the dev and invited him to the thread/board

Done but I forgot to mention the little light turning VCO/VCF on off are broken too so if anyone else writes (the more the merrier) please mention that as well.

Darn, missed that as we wrote in tandem and I invited him too. Anyway, got a very quick reply saying he's on it. Maybe he'll check in

  • The more feedback the better!

  • what does the dice in the header strip?
patch randomization, or choose a random preset?

hit it 4 or 5 times. most sounds were useful, one was mostly noise, and the final randomised patch was a lovely organ-sounding patch

  • cool, thanks @drewinnit

  • Both standalone and AUv3, I get A LOT of stuck notes right out of the box

To the point that it's basically absolutely unusable

  • Interface frozen on initial preset in AUM. Can’t change anything. Standalone seems OK so far. 😎✌🏼

  • "software engineer for three decades" releasing in such a broken state...doesn't seem truthful to me.

  • When u try to increase the volume of a oscillator from zero, while a note is held, you won't hear the oscillator come in until you retrigger a note. That's totally abnormal behaviour surely. Is it a SID thing? If so, it's surely not a useful behaviour to emulate.

  • I've been reading what is to be read about this app and it misses one MAJOR part of what makes chip-sounds sound they way they do and it's all about tightly clocked and sequenced parameter control over values such as waveform selector, pitch, pulse-width, filter cutoff to name a few.

The core sound architecture might be inspired by the SID but that's only half of what makes SID music sound like SID music...

...so no, I won't be getting this one.

  • Changing Detune and Spread also has no effect while a note is held

  • edited April 23

@Gavinski can confirm the volume oscillator issue. it seems to force the note to stop sometimes too, right?

i've had no stuck notes though, thankfully. Using standalone with both native app keyboard and Korg Nanokey Studio

  • Where to adjust pulse width? Am I blind? I’m not seeing that anywhere.

    Does sound good though

    PW is a modulation destination

I would like a "Constant" source though, to set and forget it rather than actively modulate it :/

    Does sound good though

    it really does

  • looks amazing! will try

  • Not sure I understand how polyphony works here either. I have it set with a semi slow release. Max polyphony. I play a single note and take my finger off the key, sometimes I get the slow release, other times not. I play one note and then play another with the first note held, and it is also not acting like a poly synth when I do that. Portamento, Glide etc are all off too.
