ReStem 2 for iOS (drum stem separator) AUv3 now available!

ReStem 2 has just been approved on the App Store — the same live separation engine as the desktop version, rebuilt for iOS.

Feed it a stereo drum recording or a full mix and it comes apart into seven stems as the audio plays: kick, snare, hi-hat, toms, ride, crash, and everything else. No render step, no waiting, no account — and nothing is ever uploaded. All of the separation happens right on the iPad.

Live separation — press play and the kit comes apart in real time, each stem on its own channel strip with volume, mute, solo and metering.

Per-stem effects — a look-ahead noise gate and a transient shaper on every stem, so you can clean up bleed and put the crack back into a snare one drum at a time.

Live MIDI out on the whole kit — every stem sends notes as it plays. Toms are sorted into floor, low, mid and high automatically; Hi-hats come through as closed, pedal or open.

The Separation Map — watch each drum light up as its own cluster of stars while the track plays.

ReStem works as an AUv3 plugin inside AUM, Cubasis, Auria, GarageBand or Logic for iPad.

It runs on any iPad with an A12 chip or newer — iPad Pro (2018 and later), iPad Air 4+, iPad mini 6+, and iPad 10+.

Available for $29.99 USD: https://apps.apple.com/app/restem-2-drum-stem-separator/id6796161777

  • The desktop version has been getting rave reviews. Quite excited about this one.

@WaveMachineLabs have you validated it’s the same quality on the iPad?

  • It's exactly the same quality as the desktop version's Realtime mode (the desktop version has three modes - one realtime and two offline).

  • OMFG. Didn't expect this and wanted the ITB version bad. This is a must buy.

  • Is there going to be a sale? 🙂

  • I'm not planning any sales in the near future.

No chance of bringing the best offline quality to iOS as an option? I don’t mind how long it takes to render 🙂

  • That's a possibility at some point. The main issue is the storage space (and also download time), and the processing time would be significant as well. It's something I'm considering though.

Can I test it for you? 😎

    (I’m serious)

  • Sure :) Let's see how well this version does first before I invest more time in a pro version.

It’s great to see WaveMachineLabs putting out new products… I’m eager to see a Lyra Sampler broken out as a standalone offering.

I’m going to buy this release just to encourage additional offerings.

REVIEW: I loaded up LumBeats Pop Drummer and fed the output into ReStem 2.
I played with taking drum parts out of the mix just to test separation. Worked as advertised. Then I directed the MIDI out of ReStem 2 into OneShot and tested the groove with a variety of OneShot drum kits.

    1. As a final test, I loaded up a drum solo I found on YouTube.
    2. Recorded a screen capture of YouTube video.
    3. Imported the screen capture into Koala to use the Import Video capability.
    4. Loaded the Koala app into AUM and fed its audio out into ReStem 2 and tested the separation when a good grove drummer is working out… worked as advertised again. You can just isolate all the Tom parts for example then mix in Hi-Hat, Kick, Crashes, etc so a loop builds just as a drummer might break a groove down to its components.

OK that’s fair. Best of luck with it. This is great to have on iPadOS.
