[Renamed!] -=Smooov&Heavy=- (Thor’s Hammer(head)?)
Working on a heavy hitting synth bass part with Thor, Synthmaster 2, Aparillo, and a slightly modified patch (with a couple patterns) from Hammerhead.
An off beat groove kind of came out of it somehow, so I built upon it. The real “Heavy Hitting” starts around the 1 minute marker. Have a listen with headphones and let me know what you think.

Okay…
How ‘bout now?
I first read that as “Heavy Hitler”, and expected some nazi metal…
(Thankfully it’s not, of course).
Oops, double post.
Will check it out with headphones later.
Thanks, I’ll be looking forward to your feedback!
Lolololol easily done.
Yup.
@Edward_Alexander
Listening now on headphones as per requested.
Really nice stereo image.
A really good sense of depth and space.
The mix is subtle with nothing overbearing.
It does have quite a lot going in the lower mid frequencies
in regards to mixing not actual instrumentation.
I personally would've rolled off a little bit of the low end on the chords
that come in at the beginning.
Bear in mind that's personal choice.
A little bit of high in the frequencies would've added a little more shape.
Again personal choice.
I would've added a couple of drum fills and a crash cymbal or splash cymbal
here or there between sections thinking like a drummer.
Nice arrangement and the transitions between sections are smooth.
Nice track overall.
One of your better mixes for sure.
Not sure I can add anything to what Gravitas said. Nothing too bad on the low end, as it sounded fine through a couple of sets of speakers. Didn’t play it in the car though, which is usually where I notice low end issues, so might check that later if I go out.
Thors hammer is named Mjölner (Mjolnir) in Swedish and it's popular to name things in Swedish like 'Rymdigare' and 'Rum' what have you.
I did listen on the first on YT and found it a bit much, no breathing room or something ...
I'll take a new listen when i'm with headphones later.
Nice mysterious chord intro. Twin Peaks, Angelo Badalamenti-ish, develops nicely with the guitar(? - or is it a synth?) You must be one of them proper musicians, guvnah!
The sax - Swam, presumably - works brilliantly too.
Must admit the whole is all a little to smooov for my personal taste, but it is a very accomplished piece of work. Find myself wishing you had pushed the opening dark chord stuff into some edgier, uncomfortable places. But that’d be a whole different piece, and is clearly my problem, not yours! Great stuff
Also- I made the same mistake as @michael_m above and read it as ‘Heavy Hitler’, thinking, ‘that’s a bold anti woke preface to a searing blast of problematic alt right industrial metal, what was Edward thinking?’. Until, you know, I read it properly.
Hey, thank you so much for the detailed and thoughtful review! I really appreciate the feedback. I’m learning a lot, really fast.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m leaning into using a DAW (Cubasis 3 obviously) a lot more lately.
Thanks guys, I’m trying to force myself into getting in a “DAW” frame of mind lately. Trying different things.
lol @“proper musicians”
Thanks for having a listen. If that was too smooov for your taste, you’d have hated my last one lol
I’ve been trying to do things in different genres. Trying to keep from getting too repetitive or monotonous.
‘Trying to keep from getting too repetitive’ - I can relate to that! Note to self : 20 BPM is not the only speed, D Aeolian is not the only key.
No worries.
I love it when that happens
and it starts to accelerate.
DAWless jams are great for inspiration
and for live performances but a dedicated
DAW and is really good for crafting a song when combined it’s simply awesome.
Cubasis 3 is a really good DAW though
it does have it’s flaws.
I’m currently using it for Creative Mastering purposes.
Indeed! This “Hybrid” workflow lends so much to creative potential. Working something up in AUM or Drambo has been where everything starts for me lately.
Funny you should mention 20 BPM, as I have one in the oven right now at that tempo (but using Atom2’s tempo multipliers on parts). It’s crazy the amount of detail that can be drawn within a single beat.
@Svetlovska renamed to hopefully avoid any more confusion, especially regarding “Hitler” lol
Also, I don’t think I mentioned it here, but this piece actually contains sounds from my Deepmind 12 synth… so, not entirely 100% iOS!
Very well crafted piece. Sounds good on my headphones and iPad8 speakers too. The drums integrated very nicely on this one, IMO. I’d like to hear you using other instruments/synths in place of the oft used sax. It always sinks it into some unnamed genre when I hear that, but just my personal taste.
Thanks! You mean the “Twin Peaks genre”? 🤣
Oh, I guess that means you did in fact see the 2nd post.
