The Black Dog Runs At Night | Experimental animation for Twin Peaks lovers
Yesterday, I put together this weird small piece of music as an homage to the duo Lynch/Badalamenti.
Decided to give a try at animation with Toonsquid that I purchased when the 2.0 update was released but hadn't opened yet. Everything was then assembled and edited in DaVinci Resolve.
Lovers of the Twin Peaks universe might feel at home here. Will you spot Bob and Laura 😉?

Brilliant stuff, I’ll have to freeze frame it on the laptop later to spot the subliminals I think 🤘
It's creepy AF 💀
Good job on the animation, the dog's movement looks great. And the soundtrack is suitably disturbing.
Wow Bob!
Very evocative @JanKun. A job very well done!🙂
It's great how you made it so evocative with such simple ingredients. Your Toonsquid animation gave me some inspiration to dig into that app which I also bought during the sale and upgrade but have been slow to try it. I'm glad to see the art doesn't need to look 'cartoonish'. The soundtrack fits perfectly.
So creepy. Great job, the music fits the video perfectly.
You really want to have nightmares ?
Creepy it is! I am glad you found the dog's run cycle convincing ! human and animal walk and run animation are very interesting to break down, I had lots of fun rigging!
BOB !!!
It's been a long time, but I also seem to recall his name frequently spelled in all caps. Did anyone ever explain that... or the owls? At that time, I was single and getting stoned a lot, and don't remember much except for the theme song. Your post brought back some cool memories.
Thank you for commenting. Glad you found it entertaining !
It is as weird now as it was at the time of release. Something worth watching again once in a while.
Thanks for watching. You should definitely take the time to explore toonsquid. Last summer, I bought procreate dreams as I always wanted to try animation. So Switching to Toonsquid was not too difficult. The version 2.0 is packed with great features like the parallax effect to create width, and the bones function for rigging with keyframes is just great. This what I used to animate the dog.
But the original animation in Toonsquid was very cartoon ish. The effects I applied in DaVinci Resolve added a lot. I just watched it again after a few days. So creepy 😁
Creepy it is !
Yes the parallax interested me right away. I hope to get into it soon. I want to use it with music like you.
I used the parallax in this video for the different background layers of trees. Here It is not obvious, as the scrolling is slow. But for a shorter sequence it can really give a nice sense of depth to a a 2D landscape. Be careful the fixing is a bit non intuitive. You need to first set a camera and create its motion with key frames. Then add Parallax effect to the layer you want. There are a few videos on YouTube that explains pretty well and any AI can also teach you!
I continue to be amazed at how helpful the googleLM ai is after uploading some manuals. It's opened up many apps and other things since I've been using it. And I have already uploaded the Toonsquid to it. I'm still fishing for ideas with that.
I hope to see more of what you can do with it + your music as well.
As much as I have lots of reservations when it comes to how people rely on AI for creative purpose, it is the perfect tool to assist us on our endless learning journey. Whenever I had questions about Toonsquid during the making of this sort video, ChatGPT and Gemini offered quick and (mostly) reliable answers. Way faster than digging for information on the web by myself.
You'll probably have to wait for the next animation though. As much as I like it, it is very time consuming even at my poor beginner's level. I prefer to spend that time on music creation. But I am sure I will be back at it whenever an idea comes. Can't wait to see what you will come up with.
I’m easily spooked so I stay away from the horror genre. But ever since I saw Disney’s ‘Fantasia’ as a kid, I’ve been interested in the pairing of visuals and music. I’m coming around to thinking that unless the visual element is of the music being made/played or is supportingly abstract, then it is a distraction. Your animation worked for me even without understanding the reference (AI has now explained it). The repeating nature and slow scroll supports but doesn’t get in the way of me engaging with the music (that is chillingly creepy).
From simple functional video editing I know how much time visual creation takes. I’d not heard of Toonsquid but had looked at Looom. Safe to say you won’t be seeing me with a prize at the Cannes festival this year.
