Looking for a feedback looper (I think?)

I’m looking to emulate a guitar pedal called Dream Reaper.

Or basically just the concept of what it does. It’s a fuzz pedal mixed with a feedback generator with some sorta looping mixed in. In the main mode the guitar or whatever input interacts with the feedback, controlled by a magical bias knob. I’ve messed a little bit with things like running those Fractal bit apps through some dub stuff for the feedbacks, then over to Gauss. But the combo just ain’t it.
So I turn to the masses! Are they any feedback apps out there, perhaps even a feedback looper of some sort? Maybe one of those hainbach collabs; he’s always making with the feedbacks. Or something to join the feedback with another input? Thought bout scatterbrain but that’s more glitchy imo.
Obv “just go buy the pedal” but part of the fun is finding the work arounds.
Thanks!

I don’t have any app workarounds, but you can bang this hardware feedback looper together in no time.

oh wow, thanks! I’m not a soldering kinda guy by any means, but makes sense and I could prolly rig this up in AUM with sends and whatnot. Thanks!

  • Hope it helps!

Sure did! Had a BLAST last night loopin da feedbacks, tryin different delays/effects and sources. I’m always looking for apps to do the thing, when more times than not i can do it without a peripheral like you reminded me.

The mixing of the feedback loopage with another signal is a bit trickier. I got mixed results sidechaining and modulating Things Motor, but it’s a start!

  • I just gonna throw out this as a suggestion.

Prolly not the same , but in the same general area.
Maybe try combining it with that feedback technique suggested by @JeffChasteen
(Ah, I see you trying Motors already)

Ya, motors and fold are the only ones I own outta that whole Noises/Texture/Wires type area. By the App Store description, Arguments sounds exactly like what I’ll need, thanks! I’ll watch some vids and see what’s up. Might even turn out to be another function I could route up in AUM.

  • Sounds like this might be in your ballpark? Good luck understanding or controlling exactly what’s going on, but presets are a good start and really interesting results from just semi-blind fiddling.

  • Haha someone said the exact thing to me about skippodisc and I wound up loving it, so I’ll def give this one a whirl! Kinda reminds me of DR-OM noise machines, which I have and didn’t even think of using (prolly cause IAA only, those get forgotten easily…)

Do u know you can set up feedback loops in AUM using busses and buss sends? That's probably going to give you more experimental possibilities than anything. And u could definitely stick a looper into the feedback loop too if you wanted, along with any of the fx apps you've got.

  • Yupyup, thanks Gav. Was successful rigging up the whole feedback loop/bus send thang in AUM thanks to JeffChasteens provided schematic. Currently watching Arguments vids and messing around with ideas on how to mix the feedback with a second input.

I like to play Geoshred through a feedback loop on AUM. I mix a drone from iTabla into the feedback loop, to keep the feedback in tune when I'm not playing.

Sounds rad! Do you use any apps to do this mixing of the drone with the feedback loop? Or just kinda throw it in the chain? What’s your setup?

Sounds interesting. Any chance for an example and screenshots of the setup?

  • Inspired by the discussion in this thread to dive deeper, I decided to make a vid on how and why to make feedback loops. The most interesting and enjoyable aspect of this is figuring out which kinds of apps sound good inserted into a feedback loop, and which are maybe better before or after the loop.

In this video, I show the setup using AUM, but the same principle will apply to other iOS or desktop hosts which allow you to make feedback loops, as well as to hardware FX chains. Premiere starts in roughly 1.5 hours (smash the ‘Notify Me’ bell icon on the vid in YouTube to get a reminder). The vid is 20 mins long, so come join the premiere live text chat on YouTube if you’re free!
