Logic 2.2 laggy and buggy on iPadOS 18.5
Hi guys. So I recently decided to update my M2 ipad (4th gen 11 inch pro) to ipadOS version 18.5 so that I could use the lastest version of Logic, and ever since logic has been extremely laggy. It's most apparent using syntjmaster 2, which suddenly refuses to change presets intermittently and hangs up for a long time or sometimes downright stops responding. Intermittently plugin panes refuse to open or respond to taps and everything in Logic becomes unresponsive requiring restarting it. When using space designer the reverb cuts out when changing parameters and only after the parameter has been changed does the reverb reactivate. There is lag opening the browser and play surface when an AUv3's edit view is open. And Waldorf Blofeld and loopy keep crashing. When using fabfilter Saturn, the moment you open the plugin editor for it the entire mix gets intermittently distorted for a second or two at a time, goes back to normal than does it again despite Saturn being used as an insert on just one track.
Has anyone else had these issues? The entire DAW is now basically unusable

Hi. Have you tried turning OFF Apple Intelligence in Settings? That might help.
I faced a lot of issues with the new Logic as well.
E.g. broken sidechain for non-factory plugins. The sidechain option just doesn’t appear. Or grouped tracks don’t produce audio when you play live. When I group multiple tracks I can’t hear them, only during the playback. And these basic cases were not tested by a FAANG company for a subscription-based product during 2 years of development. So I decided to cancel the subscription. I will miss only AI mastering.
Meanwhile @dwrae fixed almost everything that prevented me from using AEMS as an absolutely main DAW for my cases. Tbh it looks like spending logic pro’s subscription money on donations to him would be a better investment.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check out AEMS. Did you have lag in logic as well when auv3 are open? Particularly when opening any other pane in Logic? What chips does your ipad have?
Also, I fixed the synthmaster issue (it wasn't updated) but the rest of the issues are still there with logic and how other plugins run in it. There's also random loud audio pops every now and then which is totally unacceptable. I'm quite fed up with apple screwing things up with every update, literally any apple product I've ever updated has gone to shit every single time and that's not an exaggeration. Something always ends up breaking more than things getting fixed. Might just sell my ipad and get a Microsoft surface and run Ableton or bitwig instead. At this rate I don't ever see myself touching another apple product ever again.
The LogicPro for iPad 2.2 update is a 'lemon' (Both Side-Chain and Multi-Out support for 3r party AUv3's is broken among few other things which I won't list here but have reported back to Apple.
The 'Laggy UI' (especially when opening/closing the browser while a AUv3 plug-in is shown) is related to how the AUv3 Plug-In in question renders its UI. Some plug-ins scale like butter while others feel like they are dipped in thick syrup...
(I suspect UI 'content switching' between SwiftUI, UIKit and different rendering engines using OpenGL/Metal etc.).
We'll see how things developer, I'll stick with LP4i for another year I guess...
The slow plugin windows problem was definitely not an issue on logic 2.1 and the previous ipad OS though. It started immediately after I updated both
I guess I could live with it but the wierd audio pops and fabfilter Saturn misbehaving and plugins crashing and freezing logic is quite bad, I'd be concerned about damaging my monitors. It wasn't like this before the update.
I have not but I'll give this a try. Would that affect AI mastering or is it totally unrelated?
Unrelated, I believe. Apple Intelligence features are pretty generic.
The Semi-Laggy UI for AUv3 issues have more or less always been there in LogicPro for iPad and mostly affects plug-in that rely on OpenGL to render their UIs (SwiftUI uses Metal so the 'context switching' slows things down).
I've thankfully not had any audio-related issues (crackling etc.) on the 11" M1 iPadPro whether I'm using the built-in speakers or an audio-interface.
It's going to be interesting to see where things go, hopefully it's not another 6+ months of waiting before the side-chain and multi-out functionality is back...
TBH I don’t think fixing issues now would make a lot of sense for Apple.
IMO the next version of iPadOS will break a good number of things anyway. Possibility worst than it’s ever been before, and could possibly take years to sort out.
Maybe on your ipad that's the case, but it definitely 100% not an issue on mine before updating. I don't remember but it could be I was on iOS 16 before the update, maybe it started happening with 17? Regardless I'm 100% certain about this, before the update all of logic's panes opened smoothly and instantly. Now there is a delay and they open in a laggy stuttery way. And more things than that are broken, space designer's output is lagging behind parameter changes and that's a native effect, and suddenly plugins that were stable before are glitching and crashing constantly.
Is there any way to revert ipad OS version / Logic version?
Unfortunately not for iPadOS. You can only install the latest version. You may be able to download a previous version to a computer, but Apple's encrypted "signing" system makes it impossible to install. Apple Genius Bar assistants can probably get around this restriction, but normal humans cannot.
You can downdate apps, but only if you've previously saved the earlier version using the 3rd party iMazing app on your computer.
Weird, apart from the broken sidechain and multi out this is the best Logic version for me (Air M2 11 inch). Pretty snappy and very very few crashes. Can you try freezing some tracks to see if one of the auv3s is the issue?
If I create a new project pretty much any auv3 instrument causes these lags when opening browser or play surface panes.
Unless you mean space designer lagging because of some other plugins?
You’ve probably already done this, but have you tried a hard reboot of the iPad (completely powered down and restarted)?
Once everything else fails, try deleting The Logic app itself and then re-installing. It’s possible that a file is corrupted in the main Logic .app package and re/installing can fix this.
FWIW turning off AI will have no effect on Logic. I think there’s a lot of misunderstanding of what Apple Intelligence is and what it can do. And what it can’t.
Turning it on or off will have literally zero effect on logic. It doesn’t even stop Logic’s ‘AI’ functions from working when you turn it off (which are basically the same kind of ML that Logic has had for years).
But still just turn off the system settings AI anyways cause maybe Apple will take a tally of all the people who don’t even use it and move their efforts elsewhere to more pressing matters 🤷🏻♂️
I don’t think anyone suggested a link between Logic AI and Apple Intelligence. On the other hand, considering that a simple OS keyboard popping up for typing can crash the audio engine (which happens from time to time on 18) it’s not too far fetched to assume it may have something to do with latest updates which are all about Apple Intelligence.
Thanks for the tips guys, will try all these next chance I get. I did try a hard reboot, didn't help with anything.
Just a tip - turning off Talk to Siri helped me with this issue. I never had Apple Intelligence turned on except when Apple forced it on after an update and turned it off immediately after the initial reboot from said update.
Also using the floating keyboard for some reason helps, I imagine since it’s just smaller so it’s easier to run.
YMMV if you rely on Siri audibly, it’s never been very good imo (and most other people 🤷🏻♂️)
Siri has never been ‘on’ on any of my devices in any form… as far as I’m concerned she is perfect the way she is… at least she learned to leave me alone, unlike Apple updates…
Thanks for the tip about floating kb, will give it a try. 👍
Ohhh I actually didn’t know you could turn it off completely since the interface changed a couple updates ago.
Appreciate the info - Thank you 🙏🏽
So turns out my apple intelligence and siri were already off so that wasn't the issue.
Guess I'll reinstall logic. Anyone know if my projects and presets will stay on the ipad? Or would those get deleted?
Have you tried 'reseting' LogicPro for iPad in the system settings?
This will clear out all Logic settings (internal databases, caches etc.) but keep all user created content including presets.
There’s a new update and the sidechain bug is fixed! Multi-out auv3 is also working again (although there’s still the usual bug where you need to open the stereo version once, close Logic, and reopen it to make the multi-out version appear).
The order has been restored, AUv3 Side-Chain and Multi-Out now works like it used to do in 2.1
yep! https://support.apple.com/en-us/101628

(Using iPad Air (2025))
Updated Logic to 2.2.1
Added DigiStix 2 to a MIDI track. No multi-out available.
Tried the "Replace" trick (a few times)... only option was "Stereo".
Quit Logic and relaunched.
Tried the "Replace" trick again. Multi-output was available.
Selected multi-output. Logic immediately crashed.
Relaunched Logic and tried "Replace" and selected multi-output again.
Logic did not crash.
Read the 2.2.1 Release notes and laughed.
You might need to reboot the iPad.
