What Do You Use To Chop & Name Samples?

What iPad app is best for auditioning, chopping, triggering (to listen back) and renaming multiple samples from a stem?

I’m looking for something that can load say a 5 minute stem and save off eg. 16 small samples with easy renaming eg Track Title, Key & BPM & Sample Type/Name - whereby the Track Title, Key & BPM are always the same, and auto populated, so you only have to pick or type the Sample Type/Name eg Kick. Something efficient ie the 16 small samples take up a lot less space than the OG stem.

On that, in Koala for example, where you could have the same stem on multiple pads with just different sample start and end points selected. Are you increasing the project file size substantially each time you copy the OG stem to a new pad? I would think obviously yes.

  • Unfortunately I don't have an answer, but about koala and the same sample on different pads... It's at least possible, that the different pads refer to the same sample that's saved only once, I don't know, though.

Not sure if this is going to hit those needs, but I enjoyed using it.

    Audio Looper +

The naming situation is whatever the title of the main track is, but, it will add the seconds to the end of each export, I could not find any settings I could find to change that.

There’s an IAP but it’s never shown up. The last update says it was going to fix the issue with the IAP 3 day trial but I never got a pop up for it. Even so it’s 2 bucks, felt like it’s worth it.

The IAP to buy the app is down to $1.49.

Oh nice that probably was the price and I did not recall it correctly.

Did you happen to download it? And if so did the IAP pop up for it? I’ve sliced several stems ranging from 4-10 minutes and I’ve yet to see anything 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’ve just been trying it out and can’t find any access to start the trial or buy it either? I’ve emailed the developer to ask.

Has anyone tried this app yet? It has a that playback and mark during play feature that I really enjoy.

Idk how I forgot but WaveBox might have all you need

the size doesn't increase if you don't alter the sample (like cropping or normalizing)

You can check it on the menu, there you can see the project size inmediatly

  • Just downloaded to check it out aaaaand

Immediate popup about Start 3-day Trial or Purchase

So, I'm not seeing it as a freebie 🤷

Damn! I’ve never seen it. But that wouldn’t make sense cause @Robin2 mentioned emailing the dev about not seeing it. Hmmm

The plot thickens - really weird. Definitely didn’t get any popup here, nor any way to access any iap. I’ll uninstall and reinstall, see if that makes any difference?

  • Nope, that didn’t work.

@offbrands, alternative possibility…maybe it was free at launch and we both grabbed it then when it was on offer? And that’s why we’re not seeing any popup?

  • @Robin2 said:

That’s probably it. Assuming it was free at launch. You’re probably right.

Still stand that it’s worth the buck fifty! 😅

Also, for anyone reading this thread don’t forget about Wavebox. While it doesn’t do the auto naming convention listed by OP, the auto slicer + split regions with the many other functions within it make it so you can real surgical with audio files.

Couple Wavebox with Sample Crate which has a batch rename tool too, it’s basically the one found in MacOS, and boom. Good to go.

Worth checking out if anyone goes the Wavebox route 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • Yes, I meant to agree with @offbrands recommendation of Wavebox for this purpose. Definitely an option worth checking out.

  • I wish Devs would write for touch, pinch zoom, tap to audition sample in defined region, a degree of auto naming with select sample type from a list, ‘Closed Hihat’, ‘Bass’ etc

I currently use WaveBox which does the job but there’s definitely a gap in the market, something just built for chopping and efficiently extracting samples in an easy and organised way

  • Thank you. I’ll definitely check it out when I’m back home 👍

Is there a way to batch save/export all the slices in Wavebox? I can only see an option to save each one individually. I’m probably missing something!

Toggle the ‘Split Regions’ radio button before saving 👍

  • the audio editor in nanostudio 2 has this covered - the dev even tweaked it to speed up this exact workflow.
    https://apps.apple.com/app/id1112601015

maybe it's a little hidden - you get into it via settings and tap "files", then "manage audio files", and that takes you into the library, which is where you'll see the same folders that the files app has access to.

then just open whatever it is and you'll be looking at the waveform.

it's an intuitive editor - zooming around and making selections etc. is all very friendly, i find. if you hit the "actions" button along the bottom bar, "save sel" will do your bits.

ns2 still free and a top-tier app until apple breaks it with an update.

make hay while the sun shines.

this said, i do pretty much all of my sample editing on a laptop, as it's just faster for me to work that way. touchscreen things. on desktop, ocenaudio is free and awesome and i've been happily using it for years (have donated to the cause several times - i genuinely prefer it to the competition):
    https://www.ocenaudio.com/

but beware the "ocenaudio" app that's in the appstore - it looks shady af and i don't think it has anything to do with the actual development team. pretty sure that one's a dodgy character trying to capitalise on a freeware user base.

  • This isn’t bad from WaveBox but imagine being able to tap a region to hear the sample then save it by picking (or searching) from a list of standard sample names, that we all use everyday, ‘kick’ etc. Even better if you could add other names to that list as a User.

The number of steps in the processes could be shortened I’m sure.

I do have ocenaudio (thanks for reminding me) on the Mac but hoping to find something to be able to chop without having to sit in front of a Mac.

Will load up NanoStudio2 and take a look there along with the other suggestions. Thank you.

Idk if this would help get you closer but Sample Crate utilizes Finder’s Tag system. So in a roundabout way you could create any tags you feel, kick - hihat - snare - ride, and then tag the appropriate files as you please.

As mentioned previously, Sample Crate has batch rename as well, so you could tag the appropriate files and then batch rename them while keeping the properties in the file name in tact.

The NS2 tip sounds good too 🤷🏻‍♂️🤘🏽

Good shout. The one referred to above in the Mac App Store is called ‘ocenaudio Lite’

You don’t need the AppStore for the official version it can be downloaded for free at: https://www.ocenaudio.com

Ahh, I was following the advice of someone on here to get some instant NIN with Mammoth. They had a point but honestly you’d be better creating something in a key & tempo to suit your needs. Here’s a snapshot of the AUM session I used. It was a lot of fun but nothing I’d say was usable and definitely not sellable. A session to revisit though, I’m sure I’ll get something out of it.

I get you but I really don’t want to mess with the clean Tags system I currently use. The batch rename is useful, I just wish it was all in one app (still checking over all the suggestions). I’m hoping for something that could just change the suffix 01, 02, 03 to Kick, Snare, Cymbal etc. Picking names/type as you save the sample would be ideal and just makes sense to me

Likely just user error but not seeing anything obvious. Loading NS2 did give me a warm glow though 😊
