Comments

  • Same old UI, but you can’t blame the guy on releasing bad sounding synths as they all sound HQ.

  • I love his synths! I think there is some overlap, but who cares. they are deeper than I thought too with piano roll and solid fx. Hails to this guy! poly west is favorite.

  • What's the cool part of thru zero? Any details ? thanks

This is the best explanation of TZFM, imo

  • Are there any other synths on iOS (curious for VST as well) that has this? I'm referring to non-modular, so not MiRack or VCV (like video above).

  • He mentions some in the video (soft synths) nothing iOS though.

  • Wondering whether the Tzfm approach has advantages over other ways that can be used to keep FM results in more musical ballparks?

Aparillo by Sugar Bytes, for example, has 2 modes which aim to do that:

    1. Quantized: applies a Farey Sequence (a table of 80 fractions: 1/1, 1/2 , 1/3,
1/4, ..., 1/20). See the Q mode as a huge scale of pre-defined ratios that are
      rather mathematically correct.

    2. Harmonic: crystal-clear, state-of-the-art FM synthesis. A value range of 40
      harmonic ratios.

  • My prior criticism that every synth of his looks identical stands... and it is something he could easily remedy with a little effort on his part. Each synth having a distinctive color scheme would be helpful. And the names of the synths make it difficult to differentiate them also.

Having said that, this seems like one of the more interesting ideas for a synth by Ryo Togawa.

  • Did anyone ever took the effort to contact Ryo about the UI of his synths? Because he is a one man band and sometimes someone is working in his cave and don’t know how his stuff is received when it’s released.
I just send him a message with some praise about his quality works and some comments about the UI.

Here is his contact page http://www.rtmusicsoftware.com/support/

  • I’m liking this so far …except I can’t figure out how the hell to make an init patch lol … I sure as hell mangled some of the existing sounds though !

  • He has to change, at least, the GUI.

I have given him feedback about that in the past. I'd be shocked if he's not aware that many people refuse to buy these due to the UIs

To be honest I like these UI better compared to the 4P stuff...

I bought it despite knowing I go nuts on the stupid UI, I was so curious about this better sounding FM. I'm chocked how fucking bad it sounds, there are a default preset for many instruments like piano, organ whatnot. Also a bell and I thought, "this going to be good" but no. Can't wait to refund every last pixel. Shite! This was my last buy from Ryo Togawa.

The presets aren’t great , true. That said so far I’ve been tweaking the hell out of them and using them more as a starting point , and it’s good IMHO in that regard

It's a bit individual (hearing) I guess but I tried a few starters as I said but could only make them even worse. Sound-design should be fun and inspiring not boring and frustrating. It's alright, it's just IMHO it stinks (should have said that in the first post) 😁

Wow that’s a bit strong - glad Im not a developer. I thought it sounded really interesting on first play and messing about with it.

Maybe. In this case I don't think he's affected as no criticism has reached him over the years (see Gavins comment earlier). Anyway, I was upset as there was word it sounded so good and I also spent some time trying to figure out through zero and with that I got some expectations for it. There's also some history regarding the even worse VADrum1. I stand by my words BUT they are mine and mine alone and ergo: should not put any shade on the LoopyPro Forum, just to be clear on that.

  • The endless refrain of not being able to tell them apart because they don’t come in different colors. Holy smokes, did everyone here never get past the crutch of color-coded underwear, so you easily remember which pair you wore yesterday ;)

At least with underwear there is usually another way other than colour to distinguish if you’ve worn them yesterday or not. Not sure they’ve brought all that capability to the touchscreen yet.

I own two of Ryo's apps, VAPolyWest and ChStrip. The former is a great synth, but the UI is dark, low contrast, not well laid out, and small. The labels are also confusing. The latter app is way better, easy to use and look at, so it's not as if he can't do good design.

The problem I see isn't that he reuses his assets and designs, like many developers do, it's that the basic design pattern isn't great. The aesthetic is cool, but not user friendly. A redesign would make his stuff way more appealing. It's not that every new release looks the same, it's that the experience I have had wasn't great and it looks like the same thing.

Hahaha, brilliant. I don't think it's just the colour that's the issue, either. It's the very samey naming convention, and the fact that many come in only slightly different variants (a mono version, a very limited poly version, a slightly less limited poly version, etc).

That said, there's something refreshing in his approach. Often the pretty UIs of apps convince us to basically buy the same old thing over and over again. No attempt to do that whatsoever from this developer, zero marketing bs!

Definitely agree about the naming. I mean, shit, VAMono MK II is a polysynth, so why in the everlasting hell did he name it that? What are VAPolyTS and MT even supposed to be? I like the apps of his I do have , but there’s a reason why I haven’t bought those TS, MT, Quad, or Poly16. If I don’t see any upside and a reason to purchase, that speaks volumes!

But yeah, if anybody could explain the difference between those mentioned, it would be greaaaaaattttt [/OfficeSpace]

I’m happy with this synth, I got everything I expected from Master Ryo. 😌 How many TZFM synths do we have on the platform? The only issue I have is that the internal keyboard got stuck after a few minutes of playing.

And, it looks like I missed signing up for the beating a dead horse Olympiad! Darn! 🤦‍♂️😅

Be sure not to wipe your butt with the iPhone, then :D
