Quick groove I recorded last night with my uke bass
I'm reading a book called Free Country, about 2 guys traveling the entire length of England to Scotland with no money spent, very interesting. It got me thinking about Bristol (even though I've never been to England or any of Europe for that matter), which got me thinking about Portishead, which had me listening to Portishead which inspired this groove. Plus I wanted to record my new ukulele bass quickly just to hear it recorded, so here it be...
I will probably try to export the bass groove to gadget and see what I can do with it in there.

And here is a photo of the uke bass from Saturday's gig. Sounds fat and is very fun to play!! (It was a wedding in a church hall in Brooklyn, NY, with no air conditioning on a brutally hot and humid day!!!).
Nice and bubbly Doctor....
Very nice and chill groove. Also the first time I've seen and heard a uke bass
@mrufino1 OK: Big hands, check. Big hair, check. Black shirt, check. Now I'll be able to pick you out in the July Maine crowds
Thanks! Here's a video of one I made a few weeks ago using a kids acoustic guitar sitting around the house.
And a song from the wedding in the picture if you are interested:

I am absolutely having a blast playing this bass!
Big hair will probably be gone this week, I usually wait a while before getting a hair cut!
No worries, a good proportion of mine was gone years ago....
Oh, and talking of our possible rendezvous, I think we really need to consider recording it for posterity. This would be a great way to go:

@mrufino Great track! I love Portishead and UK chillout of the 90's (any decade actually).
Nice bass Sir. From London to NY. It's cool to see a bass player here @mrufino 1. There's only one mrufino !! Repeat ad infinitum. A sort of footy chant from these island shores
Thanks! I think there's a few other bassists here, aren't there?
There may be more than a few of us lurking here @mrufino 1. Nice groove, you nailed it. Plastic strings on the uke bass?
Thanks @Ben. Yes, the plastic strings. It came with aquila thunderguts and I changed them to pahoehoes. I like these much better, and they're finally holding the tuning better. I
stretched the heck out of them!
By the way, that uke bass is $150 at rondo music, insane deal. I had to work on the nut and bridge saddles for height and mess with the neck relief but it's working really well now.
I have been looking for a deep tone like that for a long time. I always use flats, but these are tremendously deeper. I love my regular electric (a birdsong short scale) but the uke bass is SO much fun to play and sounds great.
work on the nut and bridge saddles for height and mess with the neck relief
Blues song waiting to happen.
great sound and playability.
here is one i got 2 years ago:
Yeah, really nice sound. Mm. Perhaps a bass uke would make my life complete.
@owi - cool! There's definitely a kala in my future, mine is a much cheaper copy but it great for the price.
@iansainsbury, yes, I do think you need one, it is quite awesome.
I did a video of the uke bass last night at my gig, recorded with my zoom video camera from the side of the stage-sorry for the ego-centric shot but there was nowhere to put the camera where you could see the whole band and see the bass. iOS related? Sure- imini is running on the iPad in front of me...
Since I posted the groove I recorded with it I have replaced the electronics with the lr baggs system from kala, it makes a world of difference! And I managed to drill holes to install it and still have all of my fingers!!
Enjoy, I hope!
Well, very casual BUT -and I'm not just shining your shoes here- bass needs to be up in the mix another notch surely?
That was just the sound from the stage, there was a very large PA in front and in back of the stage. I try not to be too loud onstage. Actually, I love in ears and no amp the best, but in this band it doesn't happen- yet. In another band I'm in that's exactly what I do, which makes for peaceful feeling ears later!
