Roland TR-8. Thoughts?

I'm skeptical that I'll ever get value out of hardware now the iPad does almost everything.
But I find myself sorely tempted by this. The sound! The ease of use! The scatter knob!
Anyone got one?

People love them but I don't get the appeal, just the same old tired 808 /909 sounds + extra $$ for 707.. I would rather pay a little extra for a secondhand elektron machinedrum
If I had the time and money most of it would be spent on and with dedicated hardware like this. But I don't have the time or money.
What both of them said.
16 patterns a 32 steps. No song mode. Wtf? Sound wise nice but Not very flexible. Digital audio Only works with 96 kHz. Can't save sounds. And can't save sound(set) with pattern (!) Everything always as the dials say. Per step modulation only on fx not synth parameters. easy to use.
Was tempted to buy but didn't. See list above.
It looks neat but it is $500. If you've got Funk Box you have the 808 and 909 sounds. I'd spend the money for good hardware controller(s).
They're amazing as long as you like the 808/909 sound. Built for hands on control and live performance, this isn't a set and press play kind of machine. I've used a few times, and definitely plan on picking one up as soon as I get over my recent Maschine obsession.
The people I know who have really have only complained about the fact that after awhile they wish there were more sound options for it. Other than that, nothing but love.
I keep finding myself looking at this on the NI site (which is not a good sign). You rate it then?
Thanks all!
I'd say, if you really have to go hardware korg volca beats is cheap and cheerful, battery powered, small footprint and sounds great for analogue beat box.
+1
Also the volca sample. Has an analog isolator, reverb, and enough sample storage to load up an 707/808/909 set and then some. Also editable sample start which is cool. You can also motion record all the editable parameters too
I picked up a sp404 the other day, using it as a drum machine and sequencing it from my iPad, also has a cool compressor and I can run the iPad output through it too
Yes, very much so:
ok heres a doozy, octatrack or maschine studio (im pretty sure you own both)
i can only afford one and ive been flipflopping between the two.
i own all the twisted tools plugins as well as many NI plugins so that could have some bearing i suppose
cool jam as always too
Patterns are to short and not enough off them. (Depending on music style).
Can't save soundest with pattern is a bummer - u only have 2 hands, so no different sounding pattern for break or part b or whatever.
There is no auto fill in pattern like in the 808 (insert this pattern every x bars). So if u do nothing it just keeps playing its 32 steps until boring eternity. Meh. Waiting for v2.
That totally depends on what you want it for, they are VERY different bits of gear IMO.
Ok
Nice
Note to self - must invest in decent monitors, get the acoustic treatment done in the studio and build a patch bay BEFORE I buy more gear.
It might not be as fun as buying synths and drum machines, but having good infrastructure in place will make WAY more difference to your music making IMVHO.
My love goes to Volca Sample too. So much fun for so less money. Cool p-lock feature for really crazy things. Only 16 steps, but you can misuse the song mode to create long pattern.
I know. I've been putting it off but enough is enough. Getting my last track to transfer out of my studio room took six remixes. The room is small (81 inches by 89 inches) and I've been mixing with great big wooden case hi-fi speakers from the 70's. They are also positioned so they are partly obscured by my rack and second monitor screen.
So, I've got Thursday and Friday off work and have ordered some 5inch monitor speakers and a basic acoustic treatment pack. By this time next week the studio will be stripped, treated and rebuilt.
So hopefully mixing the next one will be a pleasure not a chore!
That's my kinda weekend. Have fun @xen.
I own the TR-8 and I absolutely LOVE it. It's hands-on and just so much fun to play. I play it like an instrument. One of my fav things about it is the audio input and side-chaining. Hook up a Bass Station and you'll be lost for hours!!!!
