Lorentz -first impressions- haQ attaQ 74

Lorentz, a new really cool synthesizer by iceGear who also made Laplace and Argon Synth. In this episode I am showing you my first impressions of this new subtractive synthesizer.

  • Thank you, cool video as always :) Buying it right now, sounds really good!

  • @jakoB_haQ - You like it then? :) It does sound good. It does great bass sounds.

It's very easy to get 'lost in time' with this synth especially when using the arpegiator, filter, delay and well just tweaking it.

The filterdrive has quite a good bite to it and screams nicely, total acid-warning in a good way :D

    Darude's 'Sandstorm' comes to mind...

  • @FRibeiro Thank you, I'm glad you like my vid even though I might be a bit crazy in this one. I'm sure you'll like the synth though. :)

  • @xen lol, I get somewhat enthusiastic at times it seems. :)

  • @Samu I totally agree with you.

Thanks for pointing to the Sandstorm track, it takes me back. :)

  • If you are in touch with the dev, can u please find out if he will add virtual midi out? Cause I want to use the arp to control gadget. Without this feature I cannot buy it cause it will be of no use..

  • While it s really nice to have the arpegiator build into the app( with midi sync !) imho, i dont think midi out would be that usefull if you allready own steppolyarp, Arppegist ,thesys etc...
About lorentz; i absolutely love this synth, it s very simple but there s still a way to get a great variety of sounds(without getting lost) and it s very pleasant to my ears (and eyes)
I wasnt sure about laplace, but this one is a big YES !

  • Thanks Jakob. Look forward to this. I had a feeling that you, what with your love affair with Argon after all :), would be all over this puppy...have to say I liking this synth so far.

The only thing that puzzles me is one LFO. You can add another with MIDIlfos app but a second one built-in would cover most things.

Also, it seems that MIDI learn is one function only so you can't take advantage of MIDIlfos 4 LFO's which would be crazy!

I contacted the dev regarding the keyboard locking on me so I can't shift octaves. Will be trying a reinstall to see if that fixes it.

EDIT - the "keyboard locking" was because my iPad case had shifted and I wasn't sliding far enough "down" on the keys...
    Dev responded quickly so kudos!!

Otherwise, this thing sounds awesome and the arp is very nice.

    Thanks for the video haQ!

I like it so far. I agree with @touchconspiracy that MIDI out on the arp would come in handy. It makes sense for workflow rather than having to use an external arp like StepPolyArp. Other than that it's great.

  • I can only sum up my feelings about Lorentz via this @JakoB_haQ image:

  • :) I'm really happy you all liked the video! I wasn't too sure about uploading this one, but I'm glad I did!

  • Btw, Lorentz is proving to be an even bigger gem than I I thought. :)

Really? One of my favorite haqattaq videos ever.

Same here. I wonder if this is a purposeful simplification (gone too far?) after the 86 LFOs in Cassini scared most users off.

Also, it seems that MIDI learn is one function only so you can't take advantage of MIDIlfos 4 LFO's which would be crazy!

That's a bummer. Did you ask the dev about either of these things?

  • nice vid; love the enthusiasm!

  • @syrupcore

He didn't respond about additional LFO's.
It appears multiple CC's can be mapped but it's more for external controllers. You enable MIDI learn (the MIDI icon), move a control on the app and then move a control on your external controller. I haven't tried again with MIDIlfo but there may be a way.

  • The best thing about this video, other than it showed some great things about the synth. Is, I could tell that you are the real deal. Genuinely excited for this app, and surprised/excited when you got that sweet sound.

Initial goofing - if MidiLFO is running, and one of its LFOs is assigned to Lorentz midi channel, touch midi learn icon on Lorentz then touch the slider of your choice - it will immediately start jumpin, and is then tweak able back on MidiLFO, but no further midi learn seems possible on Lorentz, so far...

I don't have Lorentz (where does he come up with these names?) - but if oit's anything like Laplace, then you should be able to map to all the synth controls.

I imagine your problem is that MidiLFO is sending lots of different midi ccs at the same time - so MidiLearning them one by one isn't possible.

A way round this would be to :

    1. write down all the different MidiCCs you have the different LFOs to sending out

    2. open something like MidiDesigner, TB Midi Stuff or even 'Midi Monitor' and then send those MidiCCs to Lorentz one by one to get them learnt one by one. (You only have to do this once and then it's done!)

    3. Then go back to MidiLFO and running it should effect all the knobs you've now successfully mapped to in Lorentz

    That's cool! I'll try it!
You're right the names are curious, they started with elements from the Periodic Table, then a NASA mission, now a restaurant from Family Guy, and my friend Larry. They're all cool enough that they could be called anything -

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000
Did try something like what you suggested, but just with the two apps. Pretty cool, was able to get 4 params jumping inside Larry with the 4 LFOs available in midiLFOs. Took some backin' and forthin', opening and closing each app 4 times, once for each new assignment. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction-!

  • This gives off the whiff of a very usable synth - straightforward arpeggiator, single page, nice sliders etc. and seems to cover a range of styles - acid, pads and all that.

What's the verdict on the sound quality? In nearly all the vids I've watched (including Dougs, and the devs) the audio sounds like it's distorting and clipping. Is this just down to the vid recording, and YouTube's compression or is there a bit of clipping when playing the app? If not then this is definitely on my list.

  • No its the delay drive circuit that distorts heavily. Also the Filter Drive is quite meaty. If you know a bit about soundprogramming this can easily be tamed. The Delay Circuit alone is worth the price. A clever synth and the resonator adds some punch as well.

Thanks, yes just bought this and got lost in it for half an hour. Lovely synth, and you're right about the delay circuit, the filter modulation and resonator on this really adds interest. I was really impressed with the devs ' Live performance' video, but doubted all the synth sounds were live - I was wrong, you can achieve what he's doing with the arp, echo and filters.

I've got a couple of their other synths, but this one is more usable as a live thing as it's all on a single page. Just my cup of tea this one, love it.
