MPC1000 (JJOS 2XL) clock sync with iOS

Hello everyone,

I've tried figuring this out on my own for months, to no avail. So I'm going to pool knowledge here and see if anyone's got any insight.

I'm currently using an MPC1000 with JJOS 2XL installed, running into an old eMagic AMT8 MIDI router. From there, I've got an iPad that runs through an iConnect Audio4+.

I can get notes/CC's to go between the iPad and MPC. But no matter what, the clock on the MPC never syncs with anything on the iPad. Neither the iPad or MPC will ever work together clock-wise, with either being Master or Slave. The only time I see that the MPC's clock ever registers on the iPad is on MidiBus, on the Monitor screen. But even then, none of the Transport controls on the MPC start/stop the clock on MidiBus (or vice versa).

Also, I have an old Roland SH-32 synth, which has the same issue. Takes MIDI Note/CC in fine, but never a Clock signal.

I would really, really like to get this issue resolved. Any insight on a solution would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

  • well this would work but it's expensive

  • Thanks! On MidiBus, the clock signal from the MPC is definitely weaker than a any clock I've seen from an app (receiving fewer msgs than what other clocks send). I would use the MPC as a slave. Loopy's clock is amazing.

I'm pretty sure the culprit is the amt8. I have an old laptop which still has Snow Leopard so it can run its editor. Maybe I'll get lucky.

    I've wanted one of these:

  • Wow $240 thats a really good price if it works well.

You're not alone. That looks dreamy.

I bet you're correct in your thinking that the amt8 is the problem. I've had similar issues with older MIDI router type gear. I have an old Opcode Studio 3 that basically serves as a 1:4 thru box at this point and I've found myself confounded by something or other not working only to realize that it's either filtering something or too old/slow to keep up with all of the network traffic I'm throwing at it. Have you tried skipping it and using the din jacks on the ICA4+ directly connected to the MPC?

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan00/articles/emagicamt8.htm mentions that it does some buffering to improve MIDI timing overall (note MTC specific) but that it requires software to make use of it. I wonder if it has issues when that software isn't present.

  • I have used a Mpc with the iconnectmidi+4 with no problems, so I think it's the box inbetween as others have said.

Might be worth checking the config app for the iconnectaudio, there is a warning in my iconnect manual that suggests filtering midi clock to stop it causing problems.. But I'm guessing it's a bigger problem with the midi version as it had so many inputs/outputs/channels.
Prob worth a look anyway tho.
Just turn off clock on all midi channels that don't need clock, and might help.

  • Thanks everyone for the input! I've spent the morning trying to think of how I can take the amt8 out of the equation.

This situation reminds me of an interview with MK recently where he talked about how in the past, whenever he would plan time in his studio, he would specifically budget in 3 hours for MIDI config issues, haha.

  • Update in case anyone was curious. I wound up taking the amt8 out of the equation, and used an even older Nexus 3X8 MIDI Switcher Box

This wound up doing the trick. Wound up being easier to use MPC as the Master Clock. My current setup is incredibly fun now!

  • That's great news. Now make a beat about burning the AMT8.

  • haha I'm still hoping to bring the amt8 back in the fold. I'd like to have 8 ins and outs where I don't need to worry about switching anything. It's such an old piece though that any editor software (most user created) only works on old OS's

  • Yeah, USB MIDI kinda ruined it all (while making a lot of things better, for sure). I have a MIDISport 8X8USB that is basically a glorified thru box at this point[1]. And it has USB FFS! No modern OS will communicate with it. Now with so many MIDI devices not having DIN jacks—and so many people using software synths—the market for thru boxes and routers and the like fell off a cliff.

I have the ICA4+ and it does most of what I need but sometimes need more 5DIN jacks than I have available. I use a couple of 1x3 MIDI Thru boxes and map out where to put the few devices I own that actually sport MIDI Thru jacks. That pretty much gets it all up and running but I usually have to repatch to do stuff like program dumps or integrate a friend's gear. What I need to do is drive to Bainbridge Island and drink beer. Naturally.

[1] Come to think of it, I have an old windows 98 laptop around somewhere that I could probably use. The thought of leaving it connected in my studio simply for the purpose of configuring my MIDISport just seems silly though.

    Amen to 100% of this.
