Speakers
i use a set of budget (cheap) reference monitors... Behringer MS40's ... had them around 4 years, Ill be honest i struggled with them at first ... i didnt like the tone at all but stuck with them.
i got to thinking the other day how nice they now sounded. do speakers improve with age or have my ears just tuned in to the sound they produce?

You've probably grown accustomed to them. The question is, do the mixes you make on them sound the way you want when played back elsewhere?
I used to do everything primarily with a good set of headphones (so as not to bother the neighbors) and then do final mixing on a known set of speakers, balancing what I heard between the two. Then check it on a boom box, in the car etc. Most of those mixes ended up sounding good wherever I listened to them.
I use the same approach as you, and am also generally pleased with the final results.
I agree that time does help one get to know his/her speakers. I have an affordable pair of M-Audio Bx5a deluxe monitors, which I've gotten to know pretty well. Interestingly, they still sound too bright to me and I have to compensate for that and listen in as many other places as I can. Maybe the Behringers do mellow or sound better with age. It's great that you're happy with them.
On the rare occasion i actually get something to a finished state then to "master" then generally yes :-)
