oooh...
I see glides are coming - MEGA
@deltaVaudio - still excited about the possibility of some sort of memory positions on the playback head on the waverforms.
With glide happening - I'm hoping we can be performing with the playhead, and then evolve up to the memory position.
This would make incredible musical results.
Granular portamento
I was actually dreaming last night that we had 5 memory numbers to store on 5 buttons, on a switch and release button.
So in the dream I was performing, and selected memory no 2, and the playhead moved to the memory slot, then I release the memory button and it moved back to the playhead.
It would be great to have a timing reference for portamento / glide.
So I could have it set to transition over 3 seconds and the playhead glides over time from where it is, to the memory slot.
Or transition over 1 or 2 minutes - insane textural goodness.
@aplourde - great info posted , many thanks for explaining the different approaches to granular.
I love PaulStretch, and use it quite a bit, but the outcome always sounds synthesized.
SC is more like a sampler - it keeps the detail of the sample content, and Borderlands is smeary and dreamy in a great way
I'm loving SpaceCraft.
This and Borderlands are my ultimate granular playgrounds.
@tiantong, when you hear @McDtracy far off in the mountains, playing his Blueboard is that iOS? Answer: Yes. But If you can't hear McD in the mountains playing his blueboard what is that?
Answer: iOS.
Just gratuitously bumping this thread. If you check McD's thread of ten app lists you might be surprised how frequently SpaceCraft is picked. Whereas the others... not much.
Looking forward to the update @deltaVaudio. I still think it would go great in Cubasis. Maybe @LFS would agree.
I thought of winning this free code and re-gifting it in another thread of my own
Ptch, too late
Thanks for the insight into how SC works!
Your approach has created a very musical instrument and as you can see by everyone's reaction to it, fluid granulation directed towards a traditionally musical outcome has resonated well with the community!
If you did want to add in a bit of the "classic" granular, I might suggest having a random source as well as the regular LFOs for selecting the sampling point.
Even better, another control that morphs the regular LFO waveforms into noise. This would allow you to have the more "controlled" SpaceCraft granular sound, but then let it disintegrate into chaos (or go from chaos to order)
Curious if this will work on the QuNexus. It's not officially an MPE controller, but has the same channel rotation scheme. I would be happy to test this out, but I'm traveling for work and won't have access to the QuNexus for the next two weeks.
Just wanted to post my first SpaceCraft track here as well. Thanks, Mark!
I’m sneaking an MPE controller into the house in anticipation.
At the risk of adding to the echo chamber SC really is a gem.
MPE controllers combat carpal tunnel syndrome and increase sexual function. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. My hands are killing me.
@McDtracy, please wash your hands before eating.
Are you sure you wanted to use the word "sticking"?
I'll get a wipe clean one.
That was nice, @LinearLineman, the spacecraft and you talking to each other.
Regarding the zen talk, I'm afraid I'm allergic. I just got too much once and I'm full for the rest of my days.
It's fashionable in the US to talk about Zen but never do anything like the real work of Zen. Just mindlessness... no mindfulness.
We have made it almost pointless and mystical.
But controlling the mind is still the ultimate game. I therefore use my mind as a game console but don't bother to read the score.
You are a zen curmudgeon @McDtracy. Fashionable in the US... fashionable amongst whom? And it is pointless... as in the pointless point... and as far as mystical, I once wrote these lyrics...
It's a mystery, a bakery
Of unbaking bread
And the stinking zen masters
On their unguentine beds
Like to slip off their drawers
And shit right on your head.
But this night I must pass alone
In the prizefight between me
And my own soul.
Yes, this night I must pass alone.
Zen is down and dirty. No starshine.
@tiantong , one qwat too many?
That would make a good lyrics for one of you jazz/electronic themes
@LinearLineman 🏆 lyrics.
@tiantong , actually from a rock song I wrote circa 1970. Maybe I will try an updated version. Thanks, @gusgranite your support is a comfort.
I wish I was a Zen Curmudgeon. I've got the latter part mastered.
Your poem proves my point about a fashionable understanding of Zen in US culture. We get as close to understanding Zen as the popular arts do Quantum Physics. For us Zen is little stories as relayed in the books of D.T. Suzuki and filtered through the beard of Alan Watts.
I think @tiantong knows it's a brutal monastic lifestyle. Kind of like learning to play the real Jazz. Hours of work mastering your mind and body.
So, make us some more Jazz and stop blathering on about Zen which you only know musically. And get off my lawn.
Try reading Zen Mind Beginner’s Mind by that other Suzuki, Shunryu @McDtracy. It might soothe your savage breast! Do I have to paint like Monet to appreciate it? Did Tolle have to sweat it out on a zafu to get the cosmic whack? ( he was depressed and suicidal, I guess that’s a kind of work). I certainly have spent my mindless years, but it doesn’t prevent me from appreciating and practicing mindfulness when I am able. You hear it in my playing, no? You know I love you, McD. Focus on your great IOS journey. Leave the mindfulness to the worthless layabouts.
My point is that you do not achieve Zen Mastery from reading about it. It must be lived.
You sit in an uncomfortable position on a hard surface for hours seeking to clear your mind and achieve an awareness of the moment. It requires a disciplined leap of faith to walk that path.
I know we talk about the Zen of everything but the core of the lifestyle is a monastic existence.
I enjoy the act of learning too much which requires interacting with your world combined with introspection.
I didn't enjoy the Tolle book. It's pretty much what I'm ranting about: Zen Lite (tm). A Spiritual Self-Help Guru. Of course, I could be wrong but I integrate teachings that work for me.
The most important thing in zen, when discussing it in the Audiobus forum is if it has AUv3. However I won’t purchase until it gets MPE implementation.
And back to the SpaceCraft: I would enjoy something like reset on key trigger so I could play fast notes. Of course it is good as it is, I’m just thinking “what if”
That would be fun if one of the synths could track fast midi input like a typical synth app.
Then it becomes a stripped down sampler in the ROM-pler sense. I put a piano wave in and it sounds like a piano. It would be fun to have a lot of presets for samples and change them with MIDI PC messages.
I’d pay an IAP price for that update to keep Mark motivated to keep integrating features. I’ve paid A lot for ROM-pler style sampling apps and they all have complex and buggy workflows IMHO. Only one of them is an AU. Most are buried in DAW’s. Mark would probably get it right. He uses Zen and the Art of Useability in his apps. Mindblowing work
And so much fun to use.
@LinearLineman great to hear a track with actual jazz playing! I'm interested to hear where you go with that
@McDtracy in the next update of SC it will be possible to play faster, although it's not really SC forte
I understand. An App can't do several things well and you have met that requirement. Adding more capabilities without loosing what made us love it to begin with is entirely in your wheelhouse.
But being responsive to rapid MIDI events would be nice. I'd turn off the automation for one of the 2 synths and let us use that one as a midi controlled synth while the other one circles the planets and has all the features of sequencer and internal automation.
Or put a piano wave and get the sound of a piece of a piano wave.
Many of the sounds I've been sequencing have been extracting a C3 from the Animoog. They don't sound like the original sound but they sound good.
🙏
@deltaVaudio Would it be a big leap to implement some way to record and loop gestures on the XY pads? (I mean technically, but also in terms of your design goals.) (To keep the UI uncluttered, e.g., I could see it being done through the existing rec button, with the option to toggle between (current) record, and (new) loop mode in the settings menu.)
