This is SAMPLR | Marcos Alonso speaks out | haQ attaQ Docutorial

SAMPLR is without a doubt one of the most iconic iOS sampler apps out there! Not only did this excellent music app change the way that the iPad was looked at as an instrument, SAMPLR also inspired a lot of musicians to go mobile and make music with their iPads, while app developers where inspired to make new and interesting apps.

In this docutorial you’ll hear from Marcos Alonso himself about the development process behind SAMPLR and you’ll get to see and hear what this extremely versatile app can do.

Yeah it’s one of the longer, but this one had to be. I really like highlighting apps and app-makers.

  • @Gavinski @kingvidorfan @Charlesalbert @despego @Carnbot @sbcfx @Montreal_Music

It’s been three months since I started working on it, so it feels really good that so many are interested in watching it. Thank you all for the support!

  • Really good and interesting video. @jakoB_haQ is turning into the iOS version of the New Yorker. Except he still lacks the over the top pretentiousness.

    Yeah, it’s a huge disadvantage.

    only at 1st glance... ;)
You can set it to any measure, if you drag the hit points appropriately - but you'll have to do it by ear, if more than one track is treated that way. My personal killer-feature of the app.

  • @jakoB_haQ Your docutorials are EPIC! Hats off to you + Marcos for this..
3 months work you say? I’d say totally worth it because this really is brilliant.. great stuff!

Please, @Telefunky tell me more. I guess, you can make the arp section behave in other than 4/4 but what about the other modes. It is really a long time since I opened this app (for this reason) and I can't think how you would do it in the other modes.

And if you have some examples, go ahead!

  • Marcos is clearly a talented designer, but he seems wasted at Apple? Apple continuously makes bad decisions for iOS and especially iOS music. GB is good, but I haven’t seen anything else worthwhile out of Apple, iOS music-wise.

  • I have to admit I never understood the arp section... o:)
What I (often) do is unlock the bar numbers (0 to 32) by tapping the icon right beneath the numbers. It starts to flash in red.
You can then move the bar grid lines, swipe them off screen or add new ones.
After adjustment I tap the icon again and the grid is fixed against accidental touch.

The feature is also useful if a sample was recorded (a bit) too early: just shift lines.
Of course it's a crude method because the overall cycling time remains constant according to length of the original sample, but it works amazingly well...
Kind of humanizing, so strict beats will fail.

  • Really nice, @jakoB_haQ
I really can live without AU for this one - the same as with Borderlands.

Oh, and I begin to see how to get out of the 4/4 prison.

  • I wrote before that Samplr only plays in 4/4.

    THAT IS NOT TRUE!!

Actually you can set up to 64 beats pr bar!!

  • Marco talks about his work at Apple at t=48m50s of https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2018/803/
