Closest app to Acid Pro (from like 15/20 years ago)?
A friend wants to know what the closest app to Acid from around 15/20 years ago would be on iOS now... any suggestions? I really didn't know but said ‘uhhh maybe Zenbeats? i’ll ask on the forum.’ Likely no workflow hoop jumping just all in one loop packs and simple arranging sorta thing.
Edit : not Acid House or the stuff that turns your dog into Jesus.

I have a friend who'd be interested in that as well. Garageband?
Hrmmm. Sometimes when I’m using Drambo i have Acid flashbacks.
Oh wait. I don’t think that was your question.
🤪
Wouldn’t the ACID app from Grooverider 16 dev be it?

Would be more like this one but I guess, ye olde version from waaay back... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid_Pro
Oooooh that Acid. Sorry. Funny moment was totally inappropriate 🤨 and too revealing 😳
Aww man, it’s all good, fractals ‘n God ‘n stuff, I’m hip.
Blocs Wave / Launchpad into BM3?
That would work for me but he is not interested at all in app hoop jumping. He just wants an all in one solution. Yah maybe Garageband but not sure if its loops can be arranged on a timeline etc.
As a former Acid aficionado, I would also have said Zenbeats. Always wondered about FL Studio being similar but I never bought it to experiment...
Saw this from DuckDuckGo:

Hey thats handy, thanks!
Absolutely nothing, the one loop per track is probably closest with retronyms looping app, but that is seriously limited compared to Acid from 15 years ago.
Blocswave/Launchpad
🤣 man i love flash backs
I was about to say BlocsWave too because of its great loop database and time stretching but when arranging loops on a timeline is required (any MIDI, time stretched or sliced audio), Zenbeats or Beatmaker 3 are the best matches I can think of.

I have only recently started looking at GarageBand. You can record from the loops section onto the tracks section to form a song. It also has drag and drop from the files app which also then appear in the apps own folder so you can drag the same file/loop that you already have in the loop section into the timeline from its own in app folder.
You can’t drag a loop from the loop section and drop it in the track section though as far as I can see....... there’s always something missing 🤨
There does seem to be some quite decent and useful editing available in GarageBand.
Actually the more I look at this for my own use the more I am swaying towards Zenbeats as mentioned above - where you can copy loops into the timeline. You can also audition loops IN TIME with your creation, and you can even mix the volume of it as well as you audition.
I had not thought of Zenbeats purely as an audio arranger though I am going to look into this further now.
GB's Live Loops are great.
Beatmaker3 and zenbeats will Both go in that direction...but not quite the same at all
GarageBand is too hard to manipulate audio on tracks due to its touch a clip, then hold, select scissor, slice, move the time bar repeat...yuck.
And believe it or not....auria pro yes I said it...great time stretch and timeline editing
I would like to add that audio separation is now available in acid pro and it’s the best algorithm for this task thus far, it is was developed by zynaptic, so it could later appear in other daws but as for now acid pro does it best....get a surface pro and buy acid pro, it’s just like using acid pro
The key thing with acid was using loops of audio that could be pitched up and down in semi tones like an instrument. And then aligned on a linear track. No one app has this ability. However the combination of a couple of apps would probably be the closest thing to the original acid program.
Blocswave is the only tool I know of on ios that does the pitching of loops in that Acid way. It’s not nearly as nice as Acid, and it’s more time consuming, but it will work. After pitching the loops to the desired amount, export the altered loop to the DAW of your choice. I wish a DAW had that functionality built in already. Maybe soneday.
I just found something that I think may even be better. There is a new app called sEGments, by Elliot Garage. This app allows you to load a piece of audio (ex. A loop), set the loop points, and then trigger the loop with midi. You can even chromatically play it. Use your DAW of choice and load one loop per track on your DAW, pitch and trigger the loop when it is needed in your song—just like ACID. The only thing I’m not sure about is whether or not the sEGments app can input the original tempo of the loop and then stretch the loop to match the tempo of the DAW. If it can, you’ll be golden! 🙂
Edit: I just checked, and it looks like IT DOES WORK!! It automatically detects the root note and BPM, and it adjusts the loop to match host tempo. It also has 6 trigger types! This is way better than blocswave!!
This and a linear DAW is the answer you are looking for! 😎👍🏼
Edit: I dug much deeper and asked some questions. It appears that at this moment, the sEGments app can do chromatic pitching of samples or loop stretching to match the tempo of the host, but not both at the same time. Bummer. 😕
BeatMaker 3 can do both at once
