Potential app help in the midst of iOS8 update woes, if you can do it... (for those still on 7.1.2)

Hi folks,

I updated apps as they started to come out on 7.1.2 (I have 6 iPads used in music production and bar the iPad 1 still on 5 of course, they are all on 7.1.2).

I noticed a number of issues - reported to AB support and app devs.

My approach to the current situation is to downgrade most apps to the revision before the update made to be compatible with AB SDK 2.1. I have also downgraded to AB 2.1.4 as well.

I have done that with about 30 apps so far on the iPad I am using them most frequently together on, and, as needed on the other iPads (which I use variously but at least 3 as part of an iCM2/4+ setup in a studio environment).

You can only do this if you have the older ipa's.

If you have a backup copy of your iTunes Mobile Applications directory, you might find the older versions in there. If not on your current system, perhaps in one of your recent backups (you do have disk backups I hope! :-) )

If you are on a Mac (and I believe this is probably true on Windoze as well, but I haven't run iTunes on Windoze for a while), then if you have not emptied your trash can and you have updated your apps in iTunes on your Mac (probably PC too), then you might find the older ipa's still in your trash can.

I happened to have older iTunes Mobile Applications folder backups, so I can simply pick and choose from those as needed - but the above approach might be a lifesaver for you if you need to get back to a working state on 7.1.2 and have updated apps thinking things were going to continue to work OK on 7.1.2.

So, if you do have older ipa's, then the following should work.

1.) Backup any presets, patches, songs etc. for the apps you want to revert.

2.) Delete the app from your iPad and your current desktop iTunes Library.

3.) For safety, restart both your iPad and your iTunes app

4.) Sync.

5.) Restart both again. (The reason for 4 and 5 is so that iTunes doesn't get confused about the status of an app existing or not - I hit
that a couple of times before adopting the above method).

6.) Copy in your older ipa's to the iTunes library. On a Mac at least, you can multi-select, right click and "Open in iTunes"

7.) Install the apps again to your iPad

8.) Sync. again.

9.) Restore any app-specific presets, patches, songs, etc.

I am now back to happy functioning iPads with smooth audio on 7.1.2.

Also, best to check in your current iTunes library / iPad Settings before starting to see what the revision you have at the moment and make sure you are truly recovering a version older than that.

Take care. Some apps have had 2 updates already - with the intent to try and cure some of the issues, so, check the update histories too online.

Hope that helps some. I know it won't help all esp. if you don't have older ipa copies. I can't help that. Sorry. Don't shoot the messenger :-D

  • Thank you, Derek!!

  • To save others having to do a lot of research into app versions, etc, perhaps you could post the different app versions you are using in the reverted form. I too have backup folders of my ipa's and plan on doing this in the near future.

  • I can try and do that later on yes @Coloobar - sure. Be glad to.

That's not everything that I do use, just the ones I wanted to make sure I could use without having to think twice about it and have actually reverted having already updated them in error. There are others I would / will revert as well, but which I use a little less frequently. I'll do those individually and update here when I do.

There are others like AltiSpace, MasterFX etc. which I use extensively but which have only just been updated, and I'd already started not updating before then, so, I haven't included those or any of the Korg apps for example in the above list. I'll make a separate list for those.

  • @Coloobar : OK. So, here's the list of ones I haven't updated and therefore haven't had to revert - these versions all also still work well for me on 7.1.2 with Audiobus:

    AltiSpace 1.1.ipa

    Argon 1.3.0.ipa

    Arturia iSEM 1.0.2.ipa

    Bias 1.5.2.2405.ipa

    DM1 4.1.ipa

    Earhoof 1.1.0.ipa

    Epic Synth 2.5.1.ipa

    Jam Maestro 3.0.1.ipa

    JamUp Pro 3.6.1.818.ipa

    Master FX 1.2.ipa

    SampleTank 1.7.2.ipa

    Sunrizer 3.3.ipa

    UltraPhaser 1.2.ipa

    iFretless Bass 2.10.1.ipa

    iGrand Piano 1.1.1 2.ipa

    iMS-20 1.6.3.ipa

    iMini 1.4.ipa

    iPolysix 1.1.3.ipa

    iTuttle 1.2.2.ipa

There are others. I'll augment if I think of them.

  • TF7 is probably among those that I'll add to this list shortly, although I do want to explore the new additions to it, so I'll probably leave it on at least one iPad for the moment. So, for TF7, the working one would be:

    TF7 Synth 1.41.ipa

  • JamUp pro: 3.6.1

  • TF7 1.5 appears to be mostly OK - I'll continue to try it, but, I ran it through an FX chain and it wasn't spiking out at 512 buffer, - at least on a mini Retina, so I may not revert that - which is good, I wanted to try the later additions anyhow.

  • iMini is going to be a while coming yet say Retronyms, (I contacted support a couple of days ago), so that's a specific reason for me for sticking with 7.1.2 for quite a while yet - at least until that gets ported to iOS 8 among other apps I'm still waiting on too.

  • After backing up and deleting most of my apps, it seemed like there was less free space on the iPad than there should have been. So I ended up just doing a full factory reset and installing everything from scratch. Sure enough I gained at least a gig of extra free space.

I did have the correct older version of most of my apps in backup, so restored those. On PC there's an empty iTunes sub-folder called "copy these files to iTunes" or something like that. When you delete an ipa and then put the older .ipa in that folder, it will automatically add that to iTunes as the current version. So I didn't have any problems with iTunes not recognizing the older .ipa files.

  • Thx for the Windoze tip @Coloobar - I'll add that to my other comments elsewhere too.
