Ways to automate

Outside of apps that automate itselfs, what are the best ways to do it with your synth and effect apps?

Tabletop with Mastermind and Interfx is my favourite for this but it only woks with IAA instruments and a few IAA fx apps that are midi learnable.

Apps like Pro Midi and Genome are great for drawing it in but I don't think they do fx's apps.

Are there any other good ways to do it? What about the DAWs? Which one does automation of synth apps best and does any do effect apps automation too?

  • What do you mean by FX apps automation?

Isn't it just the same thing? You're sending it midi cc to control its params. So you could control Turnado from MidiPro for example.

I haven't tried that but I guess it could work.

So what I really meant was apps that let you do both automate the synth and the effect within the app.

To sequence and automate a synth running in Audiobus through an effect app that is also automated with Pro Midi and recorded into another app - that all sounds like asking for trouble, there's bound to be crashes. I'm looking for a good elegant solution I doubt this is it but I'll give it go.

Do you mean that you don't like to draw it in? If so, me too. I just tried drawing in Turnado automation in Genome, it worked but I definitely prefer recording in the knob movement.

  • Yah to me the automation recording in ielectribe is my favorite in that i can get really detailed just with touch. Gadget recording is ok but the knob size just makes it difficult to get it right and not have to go in and draw. I tried using lemur and making my own setups and while i love the flexibility i just dont have the time.

  • Yep... it's lovely in iElectribe... Very smooth.

Theortically you could send midi to MidiPro to record the automation with any app's knobs (that support midi ccs) - and then read it back from Midi Pro....

But it would mean setting it up and fiddling around.

I find Gadget ok... sometimes I use my hardware XY pad (on my NanoPad) or a template in MidiDesigner Pro or something... but again - that's a faff.

  • @AudiGus yeah that's how it works with Tabletop's Mastermind, I never missed the ability to draw it in and it works with most of my favourite apps but not with Thor :(

@Matt_Fletcher_2000 with MidiPro do you mean Pro Midi? and which synth app supports midi ccs? I'd like to try that.

That's exactly what I mean. Sorry - I always do that with that apps name!

Tons of synths support midi ccs for their controls. Almost all of them I think... Anything with midi learn really. Off the top of my head:

    • Leplace
    • Animoog
    • iPolySix, iMS-20, iElectribe
    • All Gadget's synths (but then you might as well do the automation inside gadget)
    • Thor (although you have to go and look up the mappings on the web i think)
    • Magellan
    • Z3ta (i think)

    Many more - i'm sure...

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000

Oh, you meant plural of cc? I thought you meant something other, I know, that's very dumb of me. Anyway this is what I meant I'd like to try

...but this will work only with apps that have both midi in and midi out, which excludes many of the apps on the list above I think. I know Animoog and Nlog have midi out, I just tried Animoog with no luck then tried Nlog and it worked - that's pretty cool although I can hear the stepping, Tabletop is smoother I think maybe Genome too with the highest grid res.

  • You if you have a MIDI controller (hardware or software) you could point it at both the apps in question and a MIDI recorder like ProMIDI.

  • Oh and i do love midilfo. 8)
