Slightly OT: iPad control of MBP?

When I first got my iPad2, I found an app called Ignition that let me use the iPad to control what my laptop was doing while I was travelling. Made it very easy for me to say, download and prep client files for mastering once I got home. Unfortunately, the OSX companion software for Ignition on my MBP would constantly hijack my OSX audio with their audio driver. You could stream movies and such from your MBP to the iPad in real time, and my laptop always thought that was happening. Long story short, Ignition didn't work well for me, though I loved the idea.

Getting ready to head out on holiday next week, and of course work is piling up. Any recommendations for an Ignition replacement app that I can use to remotely control my laptop when I get free time while I'm gone? I don't need anything fancy like file transfers or the like, just a way to remotely access the laptop as if I was home.

Thanks!

  • I'd prefer options that don't require a monthly or yearly subscription too, happy to pay once up front.

  • OS X screen sharig is VNC compatible, so try a VNC client. There are several, although my favorite (iTap VNC) is no longer available. Each has a dfferent way of aapting touch to a mouse-oriented UI paraigm. Which you will prefer is probably a matter of taste. Right clicks and precision targeting are the bggest issues.

Then, of course, you need to know your home modems Internet IP, hope they don't re-assign it too often (or pay somebody like dyndns.org $25/year to keep that going for you), and punch a hole through your modem to your Mac. And just punching a hole for VNC is a dangerous thing to do. Which means you also should be using something like an ssh tunnel and a non-standard port number above 1024, and configure sshd on your Mac to listen on that port and host the tunneling.

I have my solution, also no longer available, so I hve not checked the newer ones out. Search on ssh" in the store and pick one that features either tunnelling or says something like "VNC over ssh". Like this one does:

Remoter Pro (VNC, SSH & RDP) by Remoter Labs LLC

  • iDisplay does what it says

  • I've been using Splashtop Remote with good results for the last couple of years. It is a subscription though, $17 a year, but it's always worked.

  • Thanks everyone, much appreciated!

  • There is a built in VNC server in OS X 10.4 and later. Turn on "remote Management", browse the options and set them to what and check the "Computer settings" as well. I use it with the VNC Viewer, its clunky, but both cost nothing if you have a Mac. The Mac VNC server defaults to port 5900 as expected. Assuming you already got the router stuff down.

When I was still working I always used the Apple Office tools on my Mac and on my iPad with he cloud. Did tons of work that way, 50 page reports, etc. completely on my iPad. Once did three presentations for a conference on the flight to the conference, all in KeyNote on my iPad. Way easier and faster than using a remote screen IMHO. Unfortunately I've never found a good way to program on an iPad other than using ssh to one of my servers.
