iPad Mini 4 underwhelming specs
Seems the iPad 4 is not a mini version of the AIR 2. Instead of the AIR 2's A8X it has an ordinary A8 processor on board. The MINI 4: CPU: 1.3x faster Graphics: 1.6x faster Compared to A7 (Which is inside the MINI 2). Also still unclear if it has 2GB RAM.

But it has the new laminated display and Antireflective coating, the iPad mini 2/3 is almost unusable outside, they are like a girls fix my lipstick mirror ^^
@lala You're of course right. For example Touch ID and also a much better camera. But if you use the Mini just for music inside it's in my opinion spec wise not interesting to drop $130 more for it than the 2.
Yeah, I'm on a mini 2 also. Guess I'll be fine for another year with it. Next stop 3d touch.
I already suspected it's not really air 2 specs. The mini 2 wasn't quite as fast as the air 1 either, even though they used the same processor.
I'll bite if it has 2gb ram. They're saying "Updated" A8.
I can't imagine this having 1 gb of RAM.
Have to wait till the guys of iFixit tear it down to know what's really inside. Won't be long I think
It seems crazy why Apple decided to put a A8 instead of an A8X chip in the iPad Mini 4 when the iPad Mini 2 has the A7X chip. I always thought the X chips were specially for all iPad models whether Air or Mini.
Maybe to extend battery life?
But surely it doesn't need the same spec to run as well because of the smaller screen size or does it have the same resolution?
It's the same number of pixels. That's why the minis are so sharp. They have 330 pixels per inch, that's the highest number on any iPad...
Wonder if the CPU/spec trend will now be set at something like:
iPad Pro = Newest Hotness
Air = Last iPad Pro's
Mini = Last Air's
when is this thing supposed to be available for purchase?
I am kind of glad there are not major leaps in performance of the more affordable ipads as I want devs to still cater to me. 8)
Might be intersting to know that the full specs are in. It is confirmed that the Mini 4 has only 1 GB RAM.
all specs of the Mini 4 here:

WTF!!?
Yup I think this is it for the future
My guess:
iPad pro = newest quad-core
iPad = newest tri-core (at time of release)
IPad Mini = last year's dual-core (at time of release)
That said, I have no confirmation the Pro is quad core.
Nope Mini is not last Air's. Mini 4 has A8 not the A8X of the Air 2. The A8 seems to be significant slower. Also Air 2 had 2 GB RAMinstead of the 1 GB RAM of the Mini 4.
FYI the new iPod Touch has also an A8 and 1 GB RAM and is much cheaper, but of course it doesn't run iPad apps... Think the latest Touch is most bang for bucks
I find it quite irritating that they lie to their customers by saying the mini 4 is an Air 2 put into mini format. No it isn't! 1 GB RAM and A8 is definitely not as good as 2GB RAM and A8X. Why can't they just admit it and be open about it? All that aweful marketing BS, that's what I really hate abut Apple.
So in conclusion last years model, best bang for buck, this years model, a work in progress.
With all due respect, I've seen this posted on other sites too, at both Ars Technica and PCmag. Neither were posted w/ the benefit of a Mini 4 teardown, and neither writer could furnish a source for the assertion.
I'm not giving up on 2 GB RAM, yet.
Waiting for ifixit.com
Mini 4 is supposed to support split view mutil-tasking, I struggle to see how it could do that on 1 GB ram
Ars Technica has one and ran Geekbench, they say it has 2GB and single core performance is close to the Air 2, multicore is not as close. Interestingly, memory performance is the weakest vs Air 2, but still looks pretty good overall to me.

^ Good news! I'll believe it from Geekbench.

Can't say I think the performance boost over the Mini 2 impresses, though.
From the benchmarks no, not much improvement. But I think for multiple simultaneous music apps it will be a big improvement.
2GB RAM is good news indeed. But for now I'm happy with the Mini 2.
