Patterning Crashes on Launch (iPad 4, iOS 8.4.1) - can't open program, but need to rescue my music!!

Hey all; so like many of us, I've been going absolutely nuts with patterning over the last few weeks - in my case, to the point where I had decided to have the next release for my wife and I's band be made up exclusively of beats made with patterning and samplr, so I've been making tons of stuff. Unfortunately, to my total horror, as of about 2 hours ago, every time I try to launch Patterning it just goes to the launch screen, the bar gets to the halfway point, and then it crashes; I've tried launching patterning within audiobus, with iAA, restarting my iPad, restoring from my most recent backup (which is unfortunately from earlier tonight) - NO DICE.

Obviously, I'd normally just delete and reinstall the app, but if I do that, I'll lose literally 3-4 solid DAYS worth of work, which I (OF COURSE) didn't bother to even bounce to audio or anything, so they'll just be lost forever. Of course, because Apple are a bunch of ANTI CONSUMER SHITHEADS (argh) i have no way to just access the file system and copy my work manually. I appear to be stuck, since I can't get to my files without opening the app (iFunbox, iExplorer, etc, are no good with 8.4, of course), and the app won't open. Feeling completely gutted and miserable right now; am trying to resign myself to losing this work, but figured one last effort wouldn't hurt - do any of you know of ANY way I can save my work, before I go nuclear and delete/reinstall? Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks.

The only solution I can think of is to jailbreak the iPad, copy the data, reinstall....paste data back in....and then unjailbreak it....

  • Send your crash reports to Olympia noise, they will want to know whats happening so they can fix the problem. If you need it urgently then you might be out of luck, but if you can wait or week or so maybe they can release an update with a fix. Or, if you were really lucky maybe they could add you to their beta test team and send you an experimental build to see if it fixes the issue, and if it does retrieve your stuff then?

  • This happened to me, with over 800 samples loaded (one at a time mind you) and some amazing patterns. I can't remember what may have done to trigger the problem. I know I was fiddling with backing it up to my computer BECAUSE it is so important to me.. Typical restarts and plugging it into my computer to back it up again did nothing to repair it. And after a restore there was no data to retreive. Gone.
Reinstalled it soaked in regret and will start from scratch. I am now feeling wary if investing the time I had into the app, but it's just so goddamn awesome, there's no chance of that, unless it happens again. I think having a file management system would be a huge improvement (both internal samples and Apple file management) and restore full confidence. And I plan on using this app a lot... I mean, I already have invested myself creatively.

The thing is, this thing is a breakthrough in making music. Aside from a couple minor gripes and little tweaks to make it even better, I really couldn't be happier.

  • Temporary Solution: Mercury plus a little water can beget a sort of fire, such that the invisible Principles will be coaxed overhead to dwell and disperse their considerations. Common iron can be separated from its casing in spirit and led aloft to embrace the inward cycling necessary to the stage of coagulation. Success shall make transparent the reddened fecundity strung between the supporting beams of quicksilver, but take heed that the moisture be not derided by the substance-clouds of an impure motivation.

this is the worst. i'd suggest running a backup through iTunes or iCloud and then try the delete/reinstall. if that works, see if iCloud retained your app data (which it does do in some cases). if not, I'd suggest take the hour and restore from your backup. worst case, you're back to where you are now but no data lost. best case, you're where you want to be.

  • Also had this problem when I imported a lot of samples into patterning. The sample browse menu became so slow it was unusable and it started crashing on launch. I think it will get fixed and use it as a controller in the mean time.

  • It could be a user imported sample crashing it on startup. Open iTunes and browse to the patterning app documents, the user samples are shown there, delete the user samples. Then it might start ok. Then you can track down which is the offending sample when re importing.

Are you using patterning with the connection kit/interface plugged in?

When I unplugged my Amazon USB hub, (with my behringer audio interface unplugged, also, obviously), the crashes on launch stopped for me.

  • Hey everyone, thanks for the advice; am sending info to ben at Patterning. Not using any audio interface now (and wasnt when the crashes started) - was sitting in bed actually (Ipad music cliche alert). Not sure if it's a user imported sample - I haven't imported that many; but either way, I cant access them through itunes (I believe this is because I imported them from Audioshare).

-True that. I'm not even really upset at the Patterning devs; its the first build of the app, updates incoming, etc, and it's already quite possibly my favorite drum machine of all time, hardware/software/whatever. I DO kind of hate apple for making it so incredibly difficult for me to just get to my project files like i would on ANY OTHER DEVICE OR COMPUTER. But oh well. Most likely will just wait for an update and hope that fixes things. Appreciate y'all trying to help.

PS rhcball - I've attempted to remedy the situation through Alchemikal means, but my philosopher's stone supply is getting a little low, and also could use a little more quicksilver. Sigh; guess that means another run to the apothecary for me.
