iPad 3 on 7.1.2...upgrade to 8.4.1 before iOS 9 is released?

I'm reaching out to iPad 3 owners about the pros and cons of upgrading from 7.1.2 to 8.4.1 before iOS 9 gets released.

The reason I'm thinking about upgrading to 8.4.1 is that I'll be able to install Patterning. Something I cannot do if I stay with iOS 7.1.2.

I am hoping to hear from both sides of the issue from other iPad 3 owners.

Thanks.

  • My ipad3 is pretty sluggish on 8.4. Patterning runs but not as smoothly as the videos online

  • My iPad 3 is still on 7.1.2 and I've noticed a performance reduction from iOS6, so it will stay as it is. I'll upgrade my Air 1 to 8.4... before 9 is released though.

  • I did this like 2 months ago to my ipad 2, didn't had any problems, except it seams to consume more batery in stand by mode.

Yeah the ipad3 is a lame duck though. They put a retina display in it without the power to properly drive it. The iPad2 often outperforms it I think. You also get weird crashes and things the other models don't get.

  • How about the same scenario on iPad 4? Been on 7 forever cuz it just works. Anyone using ios 8 on iPad 4?

  • I'm on 8.4 on my iPad 3. Obviously I was hoping for performance improvement but I haven't noticed a measurable difference either way. Air2 or Pro is in my future.

  • Well, I upgraded my ipad3 because it randomly restarted. Very often actually. So I thought that it wouldn't get any worse. It actually got better. About the same performance, but without the crashes. Still can't run Auria and drumperfect. Well it runs, but with lag and such.

  • Thanks all for your input. I'll be sticking with 7.1.2. The reports of iPad 3 sluggish behavior post the iOS 8 upgrade is unappealing.

  • If you don't plan buying new apps and use the iPad as a solid "hardware" unit then stick to iOS 7.
