SYNERGY: Sequencer FAB or FLOP?

I am in the process of checking out older apps I never bought and giving them a second look.

Has anyone used this?

It looks like Beap Street ISequence. If it is just like that I would like to know.

What about MIDI out functionality? How goes it?

Thanks for any advice info or ideas.

  • I see ZenLizard and Littlewoodg (from this forum) have written 5* reviews on the devs website.

Yep- it was pretty cool at the time (it shares more than a couple features with Beepstreet, was thinking Beepstreet had been involved)
On board samplers, synths, all strong. It's all about how you like to work. The 4pockets guys reprinted my gushing on their site (for Meteor also). Years later a lot has changed. My gushing comes back to haunt me, but in my defense, iOS music amazed me at every step, still does, and I do tend toward giddiness (love makes me stupid) I learned a lot on Synergy and Meteor, (Aurora too). Now I don't use them. I still use iSequence.

    @RustiK
iSequence is all samples. Synergy has sampling, but it's strengths are more (for me) the onboard synthesis. Synergy had better integration with other apps but less convenient sample import.

    Gracias.

Funny how the written word evolves yet stays the same.

  • Good Lord, these are blasts from the past I had forgotten about, didn't get Synergy, but have Aurora and Meteor, iSequence I hope gets a refreshing update. Fond memories.

  • iSequence is such a great app, so wished it had been developed more.

  • Still use iSequence, hope it runs on 9, still a 5 star application for me. Here is another blast from the past: studioHD...

Purchased studioHD and gruvtron, both gone from the AppStore now, got gruvtron on my mini retina, sadly not studioHD, probably in a backup, far far away...

you can get studioHD running again from your iTunes purchases. [spoiler alert nerd stuff ahead] The trick is getting back the loopstore content you may have purchased. True also of their best app of all, meta.DJ. You may have that one too, it's incredible really. studioHD and Looptastic (cool too) and meta.DJ had that loop store with a lot of cool content and it's not out there anymore if you don't have that backup. They all load WAV too but the loopstore was all ogg files...I had learned that Sunvox Vorbis player loaded ogg, and had stripped studioHD of everything I'd bought, loaded it into Sunvox, and backed it up on desktop. I got it back into studioHD - which is set up to share with meta.DJ, then ifunbox stopped working with iOS. I kind of want it all to stop for a second and make sure my legacy software (the stuff in this thread and Electrify NXT) will live on in 9.

  • I've frozen my ipad3 on ios7 where all these oldies but goldies live in happy semi retirement.

So far, I've been able to keep the Sound Trend apps and iSequence running on my current device and iOS, air 2 ios/8.4.x, but for how long

    Me too.

Use ISequence when I have only limited time and need to sketch idea quick.
    Egoi

    Hence the thread.

I am looking for an Audiobus compatible version of ISequence.

It would have been wise to have made that the thread title.

I see how Egoist has similar interface, however, both way different as we know.

That's whey Synergy caught my eye. Same era as the ISequence app and looks very analogous.

They overlap at the sampler level- if you build up a nice library of samples and loops in your Dropbox Synergy folder you can do many of the same things (Synergy samplers have an editor very similar to iSequence).
And Synergy has the onboard synths too...
Loading samples from other in-device apps, like other synths, is a couple more steps than iSequence because items have to go into that Dropbox folder...mixing and effects are comparable, automatable, there's iap fx to buy which are worth it. One difference is event handling, there's no event stop, on the timeline editor, as in iSequence, because iSequence essence is tracker...

Ok so your thread here prodded me to download Synergy again, and have a another look at the app and at my gushing app review of it.
Synergy is still cool, I find I can do more with it than when I first had it (that's not the app) and make things I like with it. The place it fits now would be making and exporting song stems and loops for further development elsewhere, which is how I use many favorites like iSequence, Beathawk, Stroke Machine, Electrify NXT, iSynPoly, king of these for some being Gadget. Synergy is another one of a few tool room play areas which I find lower my affective barriers and allow me to get work started.
I'd actually stand by the app review if it was still 2013, but since then a lot of stuff has happened in iOS. To say the least. One small thing is that Synergy projects multitrack stem export would be cool if it were available to apps other than Meteor. Workarounds are available (selectively soloing and exporting as separate stems to paste board is the one I learned from somebody and here.) The stem export question is part of how these kind of apps differ and is far easier done with Beathawk, Gadget, Electrify NXT.

    Gracias!

Does this have a sampler like ISequence?

Otherwise, the work flow is directionally and UI wise similar conceptually to ISequence?

All of the vids have this terrible tin fluff synth sounds. Are there some decent synth, bass, or other sounds?

BTW: your workflow and inception to development process sounds eerily similar to my own.

So the sampler is set up very much like iSequence, you can build keyboard or drum pad instruments with samples, assign key zones, trim or loop...

Workflow is slightly different in Synergy, each instrument has its own piano roll page (iSequence all the instruments are sequenced on one page, tracker style) so there is some page changing required to lay out multitracks

There are plenty of nice presets in sampler and synth instruments, you can program your own synths too-

My newer deal has been centered around genome, sequencing synth and drum apps and feeding audio into MTS. The clip launch and live play capabilities are a lot like working in a self contained app like Electrify NXT or Gadget, but you end up with multi tracks in DAW for further play, while at the same time using best synths and drums from standalone apps rather than those inside a self contained app

Well I will say you are brilliant.

You have nearly identical approach as I do. (winks)

However, I do appreciate your time to respond.

ElectrifyNXT --- I thought that didn't think that still functioned?

I will look into it. Thanks again

If it's brilliant it wasn't my idea- probably was yours! @Matt_Fletcher_2000 aimed me back at Genome (dancing midi w/ iElectribe) and bleep!BOX...those two sequenced with Nave, say, well now

I'm an old nerd dumbass, but I have much joy.

Problem with Electrify NXT is it's not for sale anymore...hoping the guy gets back to it but

On a similar note, I use the Twisted Electrons 1111/ Evil or MO Drums/Bassline for that workflow.

Which is actually 50% of my time. I am a classic NYC house person, so that's all you need with a dash of SAMPLR for good measure.

    Love me some NYC House.
Onboard Genome there is a nice 303 emulation- ultra automatable of course.

Modrum and Bassline are great cause they're so stable and tight. If you don't have it already you'd probably dig bleep!BOX. What's cool with that one and Genome, they've got the live play performance thing going

Now I have to go look into 1111 again

  • @Littlewoodg said:

1111 is really easy on the flow.
Especially pattern switching for drops where you can change bassline & drums with one button push.

BleepBox I have on IPhone for mobile 303 and B.D. flow.

I need to re-examine Bleep though. I did the update for a couple bucks but never really went back.

Off we go again into the wild blue yonder..............

    Oscillab treats me as well.

Multiple sequencing of other 4 apps and 2 simoultaneous drum patterns.

Also has great pattern 1 button change like Genome.

I love Oscilab for 1 other reason -- I can use it on BOTH IPhone6+ and IPADs.
