Free Version of iFretless Bass

I just stumbled across this and haven't seen it mentioned here. Looks like it came out at the end of July. This is a great app so anyone who doesn't have the full version should try this freebie

  • No audiobus, cannot connect IAA on audioshare, but very nice sounding app. Hope the other apps like guitar, brass get a free demo version to try out.

  • Anyone able to record ifretless bass in cubasis as an IAA?

i dig the sound and am tempted by the full version but my luck lately with apps working in cubasis as IAA even when they say they do has not been very good.

  • Haven't got Cubasis but worked in Auria last time I tried, I'll check later.

    One of my favourite apps.

  • @AudioGus just recorded iFretless Bass Audio into Cubasis using IAA. I'm still on iOS .8.4

Awesome thanks guys! I will grab it. :)

  • Always wondered what the appeal of ifretless was. The horror that was Paul Young songs put me off anything to do with fretless bass. But I gave this free version a try and I can see that it sounds more like a normal bass if you don't do the slides thing. However, if I hold a note down, there seems to be a really annoying click in the sample. Does anyone else get this? Is it just the free version?

@Jocphone if you describe your settings, I will try it. I don't have the free version, just the full version.

Are you using AB or IAA or just the app? I've had some problems through some effects with click sounds, but that was a few updates ago and haven't encountered it since.

Just to add, I do find small adjustments in the settings can make the sounds more playable. It's a shame they don't include some presets, but as I've not been bothered to ask the Dev, it can't be a big problem for me.

I have all the iFretless series and love them all. Keep it in mind though I don't play the real instruments, so I'm not comparing to the real thing. I just know that with the right settings and learning to play them, this series of apps can make some lovely sound.

  • Thanks @Fruitbat1919. The thing is, I haven't changed any settings. Just the first sound, hold down a note and it clicks every second or so.

You don't have to slide the notes, I don't get the click either - think this was fixed in the paid version.

I love it because of the playing area, which lets me play faster than using a keyboard. I use slides for pitch bending in the guitar version. Used the bass in a track last night, lovely job.

I'm a guitarist anyway, so the layout works better for me than keys.

I would have to download the free app then and try it, as I don't know what sound the free app has. Will do that later for you, as going out now. Rest assured though that the full app is most playable on my Air2 iOS 8.4. The Dev often does updates, so if it's a problem with certain systems he often finds it and updates.

  • Thanks @monzo and @Fruitbat1919. Wouldn't you just know it. Closed the app down and restarted it and the click went away! This version does sound good and meaty for string style bass. Played guitar for a good few years myself so the layout does make more sense than that funny stripey thing they have on other synths. Might have have to go and see if the dev does a bundle.. Do they all sound and play this well?

  • Just tried it and I'm not getting the click on the free version, Air 2, 8.3

The one I use the least is the Guitar one. The other 3 I use lots. Some instruments are better than others, but I think it's about getting the settings right for you and then putting them through some quality effects.

I've only got the bass and guitar versions, but the others are definitely on my list, and they do have a bundle option.

The guitar one also allows you to layer more than one sound, and is great for leads and classical stuff.

  • The Brass and Sax ones allow you to layer sounds too.

I might have a look at those tonight, I haven't bought an app for at least two weeks now...

Yeah I'm a sucker for nice brass sounds. Just watched the developers video and it's got me very tempted.

They're classy apps - great UI, good sounds, responsive devs. Id say the bass version is pretty much essential.

  • Hehe it was so fun at work, whenever someone walked in I would bust out a Seinfeld. 8)

Watching that video - I'd completely forgotten you can use iFretless as a MIDI controller - so if you have iM1 or Thumbjam you can play the brass from those on iFretless. Only thing is you can't (unless there's an option I don't know about) do the slidey thing. Nevertheless I've just spent a very enjoyable 30 mins using it to control synths and Thumbjam instruments.

Playability wise, I'd say iFretless is my favourite app of all time.

Likewise, I've spent a similar amount of time (although it's probably nearer an hour.. or more) just playing bass lines with this free version. Can definitely feel a purchase coming on..

And if guitar is your main instrument it feels a lot less random composing with this kind of note layout. (Although random is sometimes good too) Even though I'm playing it with my right hand.

It turns the iPad into a really unique instrument. I like the fact you have such a big range of notes available (you can increase number of strings and frets in the settings), and you can come up with some massively weird chords using two hands.

Just been playing Thumbjam grand piano with it - much easier for me than using a standard keyboard - Elton John on acid

Great stuff! Going to run over to Tesco when it opens. They have a 15% off deal on iTunes cards I've heard.

Ooh, didn't know about that - I might do the same!

  • I've never quite taken to any bass sound achievable thru the app. Maybe I'll give it another shot here in a bit.

The Brass is excellent though. The Sax....eh not so

  • The interface wasnt for me. I'm a bassist, so I wasn't worried about using the sounds, but as a controller it didn't speak to me. I can see why some would enjoy it though, so it's always good to have choices.
