Impaktor-The Drum Synthesizer by BeepStreet, Live Jamming
Here is a little jam I did yesterday with Impaktor, some sticks and a practice pad http://thesoundtestroom.com/impaktor-the-drum-synthesizer-by-beepstreet-live-jamming/

Cool track! Impaktor is definitely found among my Top 5 "must have" iOS music apps. A long time favourite.
Cool! You guys always introduce us to new ways to interface with music. What is you drum pad setup? That's something I would get into.
It's just a practice pad from Amazon
I already knew that Doug was a keyboardist, but all hail Doug the drummer!
Call me stupid but how does the pratice pad trigger the iPad?
Picking up the sound from the iPad mic, same way it would if you hit the table with your hands
The pad add a bounce to the drumstick that you have to be a drummer to appreciate i guess, sensation wise, but it doesnt have a pickup it self
Nice jam by the way ! My Impaktor is itchy now ! Thanks !
Thanks @pierre. I never would have thought of that.
Thanks, the pads are quite cheap from Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=sr_pg_1?rh=i:aps,k:Drum+practice+pad&keywords=Drum+practice+pad&ie=UTF8&qid=1442736738
This is really great... very nice jamming Doug. I love Impaktor - it's so organic sounding.
Hey! Quick question: Does Impaktor take a mic input through an audio interface such as iStudio or Alesis i/o and mute the internal mic? I want to use a contact mic from across the studio.
Thanks in advance.
Short answer - yes... Certainly via the behringer uca222 - I can vouch for that.
The thing to be aware of is that if you do this it also kills the audio OUTPUT from the ipad headphone jack and instead sends the audio output back to the audio interface.
Just what I wanted to happen! Thanks!
...if you plug something into the headphone out, the iPad used to recognize it and play through there, I don't know about Impaktor just now, but my setup always included recording on the fly through Tascam XYZ (headphone in and out) and playing through an Interface (lightning)..., this always worked. Did this change?, I'll try later and post my findings, cheers, t
If you put midi through the lightening then it's fine. As you describe above.
But I think if you are using the lightening for audio then it disables the headphone socket.
Ok, I tried just now. It is as it was before: you can have an input through the TRRS and an output through CCK (or vice versa) AT THE SAME TIME. Whatever you plug in last, will be recognised (concerning in- and -out). As long as you, for example, have an Audio Interface (in and out) plugged into lightning, and plug in earphones into TRS (only out, no in), you will hear the sounds that are being generated through the lightning port through your headphones... . Only if you plug some kind of device with in-and out-port LAST, the other connection gets interrupted.
I think this is one of the cool things about the pads, that's why I'm repeating it.
Try it out, it works everytime (iPad4/Air/Air2 here).
Oh, and also still works with Impaktor, just tested again. Hope it helps someone, cheers, t
If only the damn thing had any sort of MIDI sync...
As such it remains more of toy. Alas...
Ah - maybe it's because I was trying with my white ear buds that have a mic
Great jam, Doug - and do mine ears deceive me or were you getting 32nd notes out of Impaktor with quantization on? That's always been my one (minor) gripe about the otherwise excellent Impaktor. Maybe it's my timing, or lack thereof ...
Thanks, and yeah it sounds like I was in parts
This app is stellar. How in the world do they manage such low latency? magic i tell ya. I spent over an hour last night running it into Loopy HD (avoids the quantize limitations that way. well... at least it is up to my drumming skills which could stand to be quantized sometimes I guess).
Also, while the drum pad idea is nice, I feel like half of the beauty of this app is how the synthesis changes on subtle changes of the hit. pad of finger, knuckle, tip of fingernail... each one produces a different tone. so cool.
iOS world is full of toys, some even say iPad is a toy. I am a kid so no problem for me.
Midi sync is coming this year in Impaktor 2 according to the dev
I've always used my iPad's internal mic to record beats in Impaktor with excellent results. I don't even mind if my Mrs amd her daughter are chatting or the TV is on in while I'm into tracklaying, on the contrary: with the input sensitivity set high enough, background sounds easily trigger Impaktor and add a drony-glitchy texture and some randomness to the beat. I like that! At some point I may want to try live looping with an external mic via an interface but I'm running short of Lightning connections on my iPad as I have the iConnectMIDI hub hooked up most of the time to drive the Nord Drum 2. All in all, Impaktor is truly stellar, one of my essential apps.
I've been enlightened by the mic note input way of doing things. This is a great example of how The Soundtestroom and the AB forum have been useful to me. I'm very thankful for all of the knowledge people have given me.
Impaktor 2???????!!!!!!
Yep apparently, I emailed Beepstreet a few weeks ago, no specific date mentioned though, just said this year.
Thanks @carnbot. Great news.
Don't forget, if you want to skip the internal mic for a nice clean sound do this: buy a cheap e-drum pad (or make your own trigger with that practice pad and a cheap piezo) , then run it through an iRig. I do this for live use, and as long as I adjust the sensitivity even other loud percussion sounds won't cause cross-triggering.
+1
Was thinking about making a diy straight to mic in (but with bigger Resistor values)
