Copy Patterning data and sample file management?

I have been attempting to use two ipads for twice the fun. I can transfer settings and samples from several other apps through the tedious Apple File Management system, but Patterning has no Apple File Management info from what I can see (not that I prefer this method.) Any other solutions other than a complete restore from iCloud or the computer? Can I retrieve just the samples from iCloud somehow? Patterning prompts iCloud in file import but I see nothing.

What I learned from a system crash on Patterning is that long samples are a bad idea. Having loaded 800+ samples without being careful as to length/file size is a big no-no. So I began the reloading process and it is tedious but otherwise operating smoothly. Now, is there any way to organize these samples?

Patterning is pretty goddamn awesome. A deep programming engine. My hardware samplers are pretty dusty now, and I have little desire to turn them on.

Thanks in advance.

  • I use two ipads with Patterning and just airdrop between them incrementally as I go. I am hoping that at some point there will be an update that adds itunes file sharing then I can do a proper big backup.

  • Another way is for Patterning to allow for iCloud Drive backup and restore. Then two iOS devices can seamlessly share Patterning files. Maybe a future update would provide this function?

  • I've got around 3300 samples in Patterning. Opening the sample selector takes about 90 seconds. Thank goodness for the search!

Did you actually enable iCloud drive on your iPad? Because it works fine for me. I tap Import->iCloud and see the standard ios document picker dialog. BTW when this dialog open, you can switch location to Audioshare and import your samples from there - it has an awesome 'Import this folder' feature

Since Patterning doesn't allow user folders, the iCloud folder import doesn't work ... probably Patterning's biggest drawback, at least workflow-wise. (Though, it's not alone in this regard.)

  • And that is what I wanted to know: If anyone was having success with folders. Thank you for confirming that I can't do it (yet (fingers crossed))

  • iCloud Drive shows up on my Mac's Finder window, and I can easily create new folders with any categories I want; like, Audio Files; Loops, etc. The in Patterning I can access these files directly from iCloud Drive.

  • @bsantoro - I have iCloud Drive set up on my account. When I create folders from OS X Finder on my Mac, those folders are not visible in apps on iOS. For example, I created a folder 'Loops', copied a .caf file from Logic into it, but I can't see it from the iPad. Did you adjust any settings to allow random file types to be visible in iOS?

  • Each app would have the Document Picker function; or not have it. Patterning, AudioShare and BeatHawk all have iCloud Drive access, right within the app; to name a few. Most apps do not have this Document Picker function.

  • Aha. Apparently AudioShare won't open .CAF files. I tried putting a .WAV into a Samples folder and I can see that from AudioShare.
    Thanks!

  • audioshare does read .caf files

  • Sure enough, I am able to see the .caf files now. All's well.

  • So to recap and update...

I use multiple iPads, and I really wanted to take all my Patterning work on my main iPad and transfer it to my other one. This is the only app that I really got obsessed with transferring, mainly because of the amount of time it took me to load up each sample.

I poke around the internet for help with Patterning...
Nothing in the Apple file system to transfer.
Nothing that iExplorer can help with.
    Nothing to access, soooo...

I bite the 9.1 bullet and do a full restore on the 2nd iPad after backing up my main iPad. Everything transfers nicely. Except Patterning. Damn. Empty.

Any solution I am missing that isn't immensely tedious? Do I just need to beg Olympia Noise Co.?

This is the greatest drum machine I have ever used. I've been around. Best.

  • they are so responsive you better talk to them quick because there is already stuff slated for the next update that came straight outta this forums request.

I have a hunch why this is. I use iExplorer and iFile (jailbroken). Pre-update, I would copy the samples from Audioshare and paste them into the Patterning samples folder (using those two programs). They stayed there after Patterning imported them.

With the new file system, after the copy and paste, I had to tell Patterning to import from 'iTunes file sharing' (aka its own samples folder) instead of it doing that automatically. After importing, upon returning to Patterning's sample folder all the wav documents were gone. The import obviously creates a new cache somewhere in the file system that physically moves the files, and I will see if I can find it when I get home soon and let you know.

Issues like this are why I strongly advise jailbreaking. I couldn't have survived making iPad music without open access, but I guess that's neither here nor there.

Ok, that was correct. Attached is the directory at which you can find your samples. [if you're not jailbroken, it should just be Applications>Patterning>Library....etc>external data] Unfortunately (in iFile at least, I haven't checked iExplorer) the import system changes the file identification to a long string. Maybe they will still retain the original file names in iExplorer so you can copy them over, but it doesn't seem so from where I'm sitting. Still, give it a try; this has happened to me with iTunes songs while the file name changes to that random string, iOS may 'understand' that code and 'translate' them back. I don't know anything about programming, just trying to make an educated guess.

    Good luck!

Wow. Thank you for checking and posting a detailed response. Since I haven't jailbroken anything, I guess I will hope for Olympia to make this super easy to do in an update (winkwink) so I will have even more incentive (joshwink) to talk about how wonderful (winkywink) their app is.

    Thanks again!
