iOS 9 & Windows XP

I regularly back up my iPad Air v1 to iTunes on a PC running Windows XP

I think I read something about iOS9 not working with XP... Does this mean I'll have to put a newer Windows OS on my PC to be able to back up my iPad when I upgrade to iOS9

If so, which one of Microsoft's god-awful post XP OS's is the least god-awful and will enable me to back up my iPad

And, yes, I KNOW Windows XP came out in 2001, but to my mind it's the best OS Microsoft ever made. I've always found it rock solid and up until very recently, still completely supported for everything - software, updates, OS updates... and it's not true that Microsoft have stopped supporting it... why are they still rolling out security and OS updates etc if not?

Comments

  • Yep. That's probably because XP is not supported by Microsoft anymore. You know, they try to sell their new OS. And that means XP could be unprotected against viruses, malware, etc. Maybe Apple is afraid of that.

I have one PC in the same board, so I understand your point.

  • Meh. I work in IT and windows 7 is much easier to work with these days ;) I had troubles on a job tonight with windows xp freezing up installers. It's a great OS but things move on. Reason7 dumped XP support about a year ago.

  • XP was the only MS OS where your install did not deteriorate and slow down over time. The ones before, I always re-installed at least once a year to keep it fresh. Windows 7 also had the same effect, although not quite as bad.
I have to say, Windows 10 appears to be very solid so far, but it's still early days...
I'd go with Windows 10, if your hardware is supported. Maybe pick up a cheap Windows 7 license first to get the free upgrade...

  • Is Windows 7 the least awful newer Microsoft OS then?

Opinions vary ... Most people agree for Vista being the worst OS ever. Others with little or no knowledge at all, assume win 8.1 is bad OS because of the environment (which is easily modded to win7 bug-free-no-cpu-memory-penalty interface ) . Windows 10 are new, meaning there might be compability issues.

I think the most important question is yours PC hardware specs and if you use it for audio production.

  • Spec is pretty good - it's a 6 year old machine but was hi spec when I got it... Not used for much music stuff

Would Windows 7 cause me the least pain then?

if you have no ssd hard drive go with windows 8.1 to gain faster boot . (It's the most noticeable difference). But first check your motherboard if it supports 8.1. Also pick a 64bit version no matter if it would be windows 7 or 8.1.

  • Windows 7 is a polished and improved XP. If you like XP, you will like W-7 64bit.
It runs great, I boot under 1 minute...

Almost no-one supports XP anymore, music wise speaking...

Since you will probably have to reinstall everything, get a 128GB SSD they cost 50euros.
    For programs ONLY.

  • I'd go with Vista it's newer, just messing, if memory serves wasn't vista the start-again point that all subsequent windows releases have built upon, plus and minus some good/bad additions, I'd say Win 7 onwards you'd be ok with, Win 8 cosmetic changes that drive some users crazy. Win 10, not yet had the 'pleasure' still have quite a few months to tread that path.

  • Windows 10 is running fine on my own six-year old machine...i7-920 @ 3.9GHz, 6Gb RAM, AMD Radeon HD5850, also on a 4-5 year old Dell laptop.

I don't remember reading about too many compatibility problems anyway.

  • I went from an XP PC I bought in 2006 to an 8.1 Pro OS / new PC back at the end of last year. 8.1 has been solid so far running Cubase Pro 8 - I'm now in that 'should I, shouldn't I space' about jumping into Win 10. My audio interface is no longer manufactured, but after emailing the company, they are pretty confident about compatibility. Steinberg are still not recommending updating though - however, a lot of users are posting that Cubase is working well for them.

I backed everything up last weekend and took a fresh image of my SSD drive so I can restore back to 8.1. I may go for it this weekend, depends if I feel like making music or not - if I'm not feeling creative then its upgrade time - if I get home from work tomorrow afternoon and the good stuff starts happening then I'll put it off a bit longer.

Seems no matter what systems we use, we have now entered the world of always having the next upgrade cycle to worry about...

  • I registered just to point out that XP die-hards like Simon_Acetone might not have to throw in the towel over iOS 9, at least not if they are running 32-bit SP3. First see if you can successfully install iTunes special version 12.1.3 for XP and Vista: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1614?locale=en_US.

Vista-bashing never seems to go out of style, but Vista with SP2 and platform update is actually a perfectly good OS - not that I would recommend purchasing a Vista installation disc at this late stage, or Windows 7 either for that matter. Mainstream support for Windows 7 ended in January, but it does at least have more years of extended support still to come than Vista. Probably you and I both should buy new Windows 10 PCs before long.

  • you guys have got to get macs

If that's not an invite to a flame war I don't know what is - time for the popcorn and soda while this little once peaceful corner of the internet engages in the enduring and timeless debate... I think there's only the digital vs analogue or ITB / OTB dichotomies that done as much as this.

  • i apologize man. but don't take it too seriously, we all own apple products after all! i'll vote for windows 10. i've got it set up in parallels and it's great. way better than the awful windows 7 machines i have to service at work.

No need to aplologise, it made me smile :)
