An app that shows which chords can be used in each scale?

Could you pls advise?

I am looking for an app that shows which chords can be used in each scale. For example, if you choose a Minor Pentatonic scale, then the app will show the 'good' chords for that particular scale.

Thank you for your advice.

  • GuitarToolkit is great for that, but the chords are guitar shapes.

  • A couple of apps Piano Companion and Suggester, both are free to try.

Fiddlewax blue is free & has midi out.

  • Musiclock provides backing tracks to play over with suggested scales.

  • To Griker: I looked at Musiclock. But if I understand correctly, it will not show the relevant chords for each scale. It only shows the notes in that particular scale.

Octavian. contains many scales, and also suggests scales (if possible) for chosen chords

  • Navichord is really useful for this, and great for playing via midi

  • I agree on Navichord. It will show you lots of chords but highlight the "good ones" for your scale.

  • this:

    https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/suggester-chord-progression/id504740787?mt=8

has all the chords for all keys in the following scales:

    major
    natural minor
    dorian
    phrygian
    lydian
    myxolodian
    locrian
    harmonic minor
    harmonic major
    hungarian minor
    jazz minor
    blues
    prometheus
    augmented
    diminished
    phrygian dominant
    whole tone

it doesn't just show the chords. it plays them when you touch them and then you can add them to a sequence to build a progression.....chord duration , rests and all. if you're not happy with any progression you can swap the chord out. you can even "borrow from another key. once happy you can export the midi file.

    it's brilliant.........

  • I like suggester chord except for one thing. There doesn't seem to be a way of changing the order of the chord progression once you've created it.

theory lessons! maybe not for free but very useful.just kidding!

Certainly if you want to do more interesting progressions.

  • @cian - if you touch and hold the chord slot displayed in the progression, then drag it, you can rearrange the chords.

Damn it. But actually now I look at it again I think I knew that. I'd mis-remembered the problem.

Once I've created a progression I often want to change a couple of chords to see what it sounds like. I can't find any way to do this, which seems like an odd oversight really.

  • This 'move chords around' issue also shows up on Chordbot, BTW :P

  • Maybe look at PianoWiz? It has an option to show chords in certain scales.

  • @cian, in playing around with Suggester, I see that using the 'Alter' button allows you to not only change the voicing of an existing chord in the progression, but actually change to other chords using the same root. In other words, with a C chord currently selected, I can see the full array of other C chords available. You can also pick an alternate bass note from that popup.

  • This is great. Thanks a lot for your kind replies.

I have bought piano companion, which is great.

I also bought Suggester, but for me, the interface is hard to understand.

  • Firo which I believe is the evolution of the Fiddlewax Apps someone cited above.

AutoTonic is great for that -- it allows you to set up ANY SCALE (with AutoTonic there are 24,576 scales available) and then program it to trigger ANY CHORD that exists in that scale (by single key presses).

    Try It Out: www.autotonic.net

Looks very interesting. Any chance of this making it onto iOS?

It's not really meant to be a touchscreen controller, its concept has to do more with remodeling/reinterpreting physical MIDI keyboards, but you can use basic MIDI-routing and/or -adapters to connect it to any iOS MIDI-application, to make it work that way, of course.

+1 on Piano Chords Companion PRO. It has more scales and chord lists than you could ever use (or at lest more than I could). Super easy to use and has reverse lookup for chords and scales.

Also has midi out so I have used it to play scales (using the chord progression tool) into Ableton.

  • This is my personal 'ultimate circle of fifths' (=still my wallpaper) …

… made this some years ago to better understand about some relations.

And with AutoTonic it is feasible to not only set up Many Scales… --> but Any Scale (or Chord) instead that exists in Western Tonal Music = 24,576 Scales. Thanks to its new and patented mapping method. That and some other unique features are probably the reason why award-winning producers and even an oscar-nominated film-composer already use it on a regularly basis, btw

Do they (or you as you have the same name) make it for iOS or Android? Looks pretty cool.

I just realized you were flogging it upstream and don't seem to have plans for iOS. So you would need to drag around a computer with you.

  • Suggester is great! MIDI out and in. Great learning tool as well

We'll see what the future brings. That's all I can say for now. I've tried myself to use touch screens for creating music … not a big fan of it personally.

Oh and yeah -- disclaimer to all Musical Jake Paulers here, of course: I didn't wanted to 'trigger' anyone with this … just wanted to plug my Merch (in peace) and let know those who were interested in it :) Have fun, Clemens
