16 MIDI KNOBS - Which little parameter animals do you let on the Ark?

If you use midi controller knobs to control your Synth and Effect apps. Which parameters make the cut?

Obviously this depends on the app....for example if the app has more than 1 oscillator, what gets left off?

Do you keep the app on omni and spread parameters over 2 channels?

I always struggle to whittle it down to a happy mapping. There's always something I wish I could include.

I thought it might be interesting to find out what parameters we choose for different apps.

  • I tend to set-up for live so I have Magellan's effects levels setup (dry/wet mix & delay time) some filtering & volume levels for a few instruments. Lately I've been using my old 1st gen iPad in an Alesis I/O Dock for control over other items.

  • I thought about this exact question the other day, here's my answer:

    1. Filter Cutoff
    2. Filter Resonance
    3. Pan
    4. Main Volume
      5-8. Amp envelope controls
      9-12. Filter envelope controls
    5. Filter Envelope depth
    6. 2nd Osc fine-tune
    7. Osc Mix
    8. Portamento speed

Filter Cut-off, Resonance, Env Amount, LFO Speed, LFO Depth, Delay Return, Distortion Amount, Noise Level + ADSR for Filter and Amp

Edit - Just noticed this is my 500th post on the forum - not that this really means anything - I just felt like marking the occasion.

    Happy 500th @xen.

I got tired enough of trying to answer this question that I found a MIDI controller that basically allows me to skip it: Novation X-Station 49. image

It's basically one knob-per-function for most subtractive synth needs. I love it. I get to use muscle memory to program synths again. I think it's silly that there aren't more MIDI synth controllers out there like this one.

When pressed though, my solution was similar to everyone else's. Usually these 8: ADSR, Cutoff, Resonance, LFO depth, LFO speed. That might adjust a bit depending on the synth but those are the generally the things I want access to as quickly as possible when playing (because you're not going to really do much 'programming', per se, with 8 knobs).

  • Interesting answers, thanks all.

@syrupcore That X-Station looks sweet! Thanks for posting.

Can the CC #s be customised? Is there any part of the X-Station you'd be concerned about if buying 2nd hand? Thanks.

  • Different everytime.. I only midi learn parameters I want to control in realtime and that changes every synth I use.
I find it kind of weird you guys make lists of knobs you will assign to cc, no offence. It's just that every synth is different and it's just an odd concept to me... Maybe I'm weird :p

Yep. Some knobs can have multiple CCs. So eg "waveform" can have a different CC depending on which OSC button is pressed.

    I bought mine used too.

  • heh, my initial reaction to this thread topic was damn i am a newb to synthesis. I find almost every patch is different too in this regard.

  • Well, with the Beatstep you have 16 different "patches" for lack of a better term. I have 4 different patches for 4 different scenario's. I'm sure I will fill up the rest soon. So far I have, 1) Sampletank, 2)Thor, 3)Animoog & 4)Alchemy. Still fine tuning which knobs do what. Probably will always be changing though.
