iPhone DAWs
BeatMaker 2 is buggy on iOS 9 with Audiobus (and it has a buggy file system)--BeatMaker 3 has promise. There's Looptical (but I can't seem to find an editable sequencer in it. There's Garageband (doesn't like to share with others--likes to keep you locked in). Mobile Music Sequencer doesn't allow plugins and is a very closed system. Caustic doesn't support IAA or MIDI out. FLStudio Mobile (changing to a completely new app--has promise! The list goes on and on... NanoStudio 3 shows promise, but NanoStudio 2 doesn't accept IAA apps. etc., etc., etc.
So, what works relatively well for you? So far, I've found that Music Studio seems to be the best over all working DAW for the iPhone at this moment. What are your thoughts?

I used to love Multitrack DAW. On ipod and ipad. But............. I can't get anything to work with it now-a-days. AUdiobus, IAA.
I wish I could. It was so easy to use, the developer made it so you touch on one of the controls, and for example, the volume control appears bigger as a pop up control.
I would much rather record into Multitrack and then mix and master in Auria. But, It doesn't work for me.
Supposedly, an update to MultiTrack DAW is coming out in a couple of weeks, according to the developer in the forums. I forgot to mention MultiTrack DAW in my list above, as well as several others, but it is great for recording audio. It just isn't so great for sequencing MIDI.....
@Audiojunkie
I like MusicStudio (Xewton) for some things and the outgoing FL Studio Mobile for other things, wish I could mush em together -
I still go back to (outgoing also) BM 2, likely because I use IAA with it exclusively which seems undisturbed. It doesn't let one get at IAA fx, and I've tried n-track pro for that...and was bugged out. Will try again and report. EDIT: no sound via IAA
An update will be great! Hope it fixes things for me.
GarageBand could be so good if it: let you edit audio like it does midi (double tap on a region), gave you simple volume envelope to work with to control fades (with audio editing they'd only have to add this to midi regions), and then for crying out loud NOT limit the smart controls to just a handful of instruments (why they do this is baffling to me).
Thing is, these three things would be relatively easy to add, but it appears they prefer their app to fall short of what it could be.
I don't know, not a lot of appeal in iPhone DAWs. MultiTrack has a nice level of simplicity to it, but yeah, no midi. Music Studio is close, but like GarageBand it too is lacking a few features (no beat markers in the audio editor? smh).
I think of these 3, MultiTrack is the most useful. Good to hear it has an update on the way.
I have to stick up for GarageBand, even considering its insularity; IMHO it has a great UI, looks good & you can (still on my iPhone 5 somewhere on 8) use AB to bring other apps into play. And, it's a tool. I have (access to) some of the other "tools" mentioned, but on my iPhone their UI's are crammed into the space - not to mention learning curves (SunVox. anyone?). Sure, an iPad would address some of my issues, but I was in the market for a new phone at the time and had to go with what I have... an iPad is a luxury until who-knows-when.
That's the thing, I mostly use Sunvox on the 6, of the above (sending it files made in Vividtracker. So you probably shouldn't listen to me about this stuff) BM2 with IAA and the various available IAP soundware is also pretty incredible.
N-track studio still works great as a DAW on IPhone & IPad for me. I went IOS 9 and it runs the same as IOS 8 (except for those dopey "somebody wants to use somebody" questions). I realize nobody on the bus likes n-track but me, but I like it fine for how I do my DAWs.
Oh, don't get me wrong - I've spent enough money on apps that I want to learn more about how I might utilize them more eventually. I'm generally all in, but my needs are (presently) simple enough, and the iPhone certainly puts a little crimp on UI's itself. But I do hope to get around to using more of the capabilities I have even now.
I'm sure it's user error in my case I haven't really worked it out.
And if GarageBand really wanted to set itself apart: smart controls midi out to control IAA apps.
They'd probably have to add track freeze to audio (to avoid having too many apps open at once), but those two things would be huge.
Trying to work on this months song of the month with the new iPhone. I'm finding SunVox works ok, once you get used to the changes to the UI for the smaller screen. My main issue is that I can't use Audio Mastering or Final Touch so everything has to happen in SunVox then Audioshare (which is possibly even better on the small screen)
Yeah, we need a mastering app on the iphone. :-)
I sample stuff into NS1's Eden via audiobus and just get on with it.
Good point @syrupcore I'm not sure everyone knows about that trick though, so I'm glad you mentioned that. I haven't played with Eden synths for almost a year now. Time to play with NanoStudio again. Still love them drum samples as a starting point.
Oh NanoStudio, why did I abandon you? You never locked up or crashed on me. I'm sorry baby.
MmmEdenmmm.
NS is kind of home base on iPhone, it has what BM2 lacks and vice versa, with Caustic a nation unto itself, any single one does more than enough: I wouldn't wait on updates either, classic bargains each
I like the get on with it part. I asked a writer friend for a good word to help me further my work. He said sure, one word: finish.
I usually sample single notes into Eden in the range I aim to use it. Eden does convert it to mono and if there's any 'movement' in the source sample, that movement will speed up and slow down as you move around the keyboard since there's no multi-sampling. For the most part, it's from fine to awesome—happy sonic accidents included. Plus, you can still use all of the rest of Eden's synth on the sampled source.
If I want a pristine phrase I'll sample it to a TRG pad and just trigger it. Generally, I prefer the flexibility of eden though. For the particularly ambitious with a limited-note melody, you can of course sample individual notes to TRG pads and trigger them ala MPC.
Very cool.
I do something similar-ish with Bilbao in Gadget when I want to use a bass patch, for example, from another synth. By applying applying Gadgets FX and messing with the start and end time of the samples and modulating pitch you can get some great 'modern' baseline magic happening.
Does this still work for you on latest iOS? Cant play keyboard on Animoog to record notes.
I haven't upgraded to 9 yet, sorry.
This thread inspired me to revisit Nanostudio, what a gem! I had ignored it mainly because it's kind of closed when viewed as a DAW, and I forgot how jam packed with goodness it is. Easy to use too, got that good workflow thing going. Hello again Nanostudio.
That's the thing about these threads: I could circle back endlessly just given the tools already out there
This.
