Patreon Hack

I know a lot of you are on Patreon, and you probably know this already, but if not:

Hope everything works out.

  • Bump. Lot's of TSTR, Discchord, etc Patreon's on this site.

I'm all for website hacking—makes the Internet more secure. And I get the public shaming angle of dumping all of the Ashley Madison data. But dumping all of the user data for a site where people directly support indie creators, subverting the traditional business models white-hat hackers so often rail against? Fucking shameful.

  • Commenter over at gizmodo has a theory on the why.

I think I know why. There are a number of irrational gamers out there who feel that streamers and other casters were somehow copping out by using Patreon. Go look up the strange backlash that Jim Sterling and others in his field got for using Patreon recently. It was a minority group, but they were very vocal and angry. Why, I don’t really know. Jim has responded to the haters in his videos. I bet you money it was those assholes that are behind this hack.

Sigh. I actually think it likely that I've forgotten my Patreon password and thus see the bitter irony in the hackers having that which I do not....

I'd go and check if it is there somewhere within the dumped data ;)

  • Anyone who hacks a site like Pateron that helps people donate is f*cked in the head. They will loose users who are concerned about security which means less money for the web creators. Sad.

    Unfortunately, I agree.

Given how hard it is for people to scrape together a living out of the arts - particularly music - these days, it just seems like a pretty strange choice of target. And benevolent people have their data outted.

  • ^ yep. Totally messed up. Hopefully they get a pile of scorn from their own community as that's about all we can hope for.
