Ardour open-source DAW with iPad and MIDI

Hi, I was taking a look at the open-source DAW Ardour, and was wondering if I'd be able to use something like studiomux to send MIDI out from Ardour to the iPad, and then maybe audio from iPad into an Ardour audio track. I haven't downloaded or paid anything for Ardour yet, since I wanted to see if this was possible. I'd be running the 64-bit OS X version, running OS X 10.10.5 and using an iPad Mini 2, iOS 9

  • I was able to send MIDI out from Logic Pro, then route the audio back in, using Studiomux. As I understand it Music IO does the same thing. It should work as long as Ardour has MIDI out and Audio in, though I can't say for sure. Maybe check Ardour's site for support or an official forum.

  • @1P18 thanks, ultimately I'd like to get either Logic Pro or Ableton, but I was wondering if I could sort use something in the mean time for cheaper. Some initial searches didn't clearly answer my question but it probably warrants a little further digging.

    AFAIK Ardour supports Audio Units so I guess you will be able to use studiomax for audio input

  • Here's what Ardour's online manual says about making connections:

    http://manual.ardour.org/signal-routing/Patchbay/

    In Logic it treated the Studiomux midi connection as hardware, and the audio connection as another audio input. Looks like Ardour has capabilities for those two things. Again, can't say for sure though. Not all DAWs are the same, but most if not all should have the ability to connect both audio and midi.

  • Actually, I can confirm that midi out and audio in with studiomax work fine. I just found out that I still have Ardour installed on my mac. It's a nice DAW developed by a group of enthusiasts that you can download after a small donation, but... I decided to go the cubase way :)

  • @yug @1P18 Thanks! Time to free up a little hard drive space, make a little donation, and get crackin'. I haven't found a piano roll editor that I'm as comfortable with on iPad compared to using a laptop, and it'll be nice to be able to edit clips in once place and focus on tuning synth sounds in another!

  • @reverberator not to detract from Ardour in anyway but if you're looking for inexpensive and awesome, check out Reaper too.

  • @syrupcore thanks, that's got a 60-day trial so I can give that a shot too.

    @reverberator Good luck, mate!

    Logic is nice and cheaper than other similar products but some people (like me) just can't stand its UI. And there's no demo version you can try before buying, and you can't transfer your licence later... So, be sure to try it out somewhere before buying

    As for Ableton, its Intro version is too limited and Standard/Suite is too damn expensive for an amateur like me

    So, I found a great deal on Ebay and bought Cubase 7 LE and Wavelab 8 LE for just $30. Since then, I spent about $40 on upgrading to Cubase 8 Elements and $30 on Cubasis (when it was %50 off). So, now I have 3 great products for the price of Cubase Elements or Live Intro alone :)
