Thoughts on the new iOS 9 split screen with music apps?

Haven't seen too much about this, maybe I just missed it in another thread or something, but how is the new split screen in iOS 9 with music apps? Not sure how many music apps have this yet, so maybe it's too early to tell? Seems to me like this would be a welcome feature for music making, for things like midi controllers, etc.

Impressions?

    I guess we need a new generation of apps to make it happen!

    lots n lots of music apps are made for ipad in horizontal mode before split screen existed, you can't just update them and squeeze them into what ever the dimensions are now ...

    I use it a lot to check my mail and read news while I'm using a music app. Very handy.

    I think the problem for music apps is resizing them to fit a screen. That's what the current crop of apps do. Imagine trying to fit Cubasis in half a screen! Maybe another option is to offer scroll bars like a window on a desktop.

    I just started a new thread about this. Turns out I missed 2 threads already written about it...
    So it seems there's really not much besides midimittr and midiflow. I hope at least those apps that work in both orientations will get this feature soon. For those it shouldn't take much to implement it. So Gadget, Loopy, Auria, Audiobus & remote, Thumbjam, Caustic should all be getting this. Maybe they would have to have black stripes on the sides or something so they could keep the exact same ratio of portrait mode? Maybe in theory there would even be enough room for 3 portrait apps side by side.

  • I'm very excited about this feature but it will be a lot harder to do with older apps, so expect to see them support it later. Especially the more complicated skeumorphic designs of the first wave of iPad apps. I will probably have to just completely re-do the FunkBox UI to make it work. And Apple themselves don't even support it for Garageband yet, so you know it's not trivial.

    For my newer apps, I intentionally started with flatter, cleaner designs so that I knew I would be able to support this easier. But for the type of complicated interfaces you see on sequencer, synths and drum machines it is still not as easy a change as, for instance, a text based app where you change the size of the text window and the text just flows differently. There is the technical programming problem of how to support the size changes, but also a lot of hard design/UI decisions to be made. Most of them can't just be shrunk, things need to be re-arranged and put in different spots or hidden with tabs.

    I personally think that the original fixed screen sizes on the iPhone and iPad were part of what spurred a lot of the creativity in music apps. You didn't have to worry about supporting a gazillion plugin formats like on PCs, you didn't have to worry about supporting a bunch of screen sizes like on Android, you could spend your UI time focusing on making a great consistent 640x480 or 1024x768 interface, and the rest of your time focusing on the music part. And the fact you could focus more on fun stuff made it easier to charge less! Apps are definitely getting a lot more complicated to make and keep updated now.

    All that whining aside, split screen will be great and I'm excited about it. Switching back and forth between full screen apps has been a necessary evil for too long.

  • It's harder to implement that it should be... For the main UI, it is easy especially if you have a iPhone layout already. You basically only have to remove the device-specific checks (iPhone or iPad) and replace them by checking the screen size (and be ready for it to change during runtime).

    What gave me headaches however was turing a popover (of the single foreground app) to a fullscreen view with a "Done" button (in multitasking). There is an API for this, but it only covers the easiest case – poor API design by Apple in my opinion. E.g. I wanted separate popovers to merge into one tab bar controller when the app is displayed in split view, and lot's of other stuff.

    However, it's great once it's working :)

    Thanks Art and Johannes for the other-side-of-the-app-store view. As an iPhone user, I do like that supporting split view sort of encourages devs to create iPhone versions. Or at least the work aligns well ("once I do all the work to make the split view, might as well release an iPhone version").

    Does an app have to have feature parity in split view or are devs allowed to streamline capabilities? I haven't tried ios9 yet but I can imagine a lot of scenarios where I'd actually prefer less than the full app when in split view.
