@soundklinik midiSTEPs currently sends MIDI notes (with adjustable velocity and length) and MIDI CCs (0-127) per step. It can also send and receive MIDI clock. It doesn't do program change (would like to do this in the future), SYSEX, or extended CCs (only 0-127).
@Cinebient @Jocphone I would like to have it work on the iPhone also but I'm focusing on iPad for now to get it right first. The iPad is nice to start on because there is still only one interface size (the Pro isn't out quite yet!) and like making music, when making apps some constraints can be good. I want to add split screen modes eventually, when I do that I will be adjusting the interface size and I can see how things would work on an iPhone.
I have been experimentng with these apps in different forms for years, originally they were actually iPhone apps. Currently though I use the iPad more in my studio, so that plus the fixed size made it the one to start with.
Oh and I got a message from @Samu letting me know he figured out the crash, it's when you press an empty step while in transpose or pattern mode instead of record mode. Argh. So don't do that until I fix it, which I will soon! Thanks @Samu
Another article later but played with it for two or three hours last night and I'm in love. So many amazing little niceties. I was really surprised at how easy it was to use for drums. I just pointed it at Nanostudio because it's the simplest and least taxing way I know of to get four different synths going (or 3 + drums). They're a dream together.
I did have a few crashes (iPad 3, iOS 8.4.1) but sadly I was unable to reproduce any of them so, sorta useless.
Crashes be damned, I'm looking forward to another view hours with it tonight.
Thanks @syrupcore. Bah crashes, sorry about that. I will track them down and kill them. I'm using this thing myself to make music and I want it to be solid.
Anyone who comes across a pattern of bugs/crashes let me know, first update will be submitted soon and I'll keep fixing them as long as they keep happening.
I read this before trying the app and prepared for it to be difficult. At first it was but after a bit I like the way it's currently set up: it's easy to change the note if it's a mono step (most common use case, presumably) and easy enough to build a chord to make a poly step. I found the easiest way for me was to sort of 'build the chord' by tapping the first note and keeping my finger held down and the continuing to add fingers one by one.
@artkerns I'll send along some notes tonight or tomorrow. I wrote down what was happening when it crashed but couldn't reproduce them so I doubt I captured the right steps. Not a huge deal—I was mostly covered by auto save.
Look forward to reading more of your experience/suggestions/ideas. Doug's video did enhance my prospects of purchase.
Up over too far exactly. Thanks @artkerns @syrupcore, looks all good about for learning;)
@artkerns The fact that it does chords and sort of acts as a midi clip launcher is why I bought it. That and your midi stuff in Funkbox was rock solid. All the other stuff is gravy, really delicious gravy. Now hop to it and make a iphone version now that you have my $10
Thanks for the explanation artkerns. It's a shame that devs set a lower priority on the iPhone as it is such a great platform now with the larger screen size. The 3D touch is quite compelling for certain apps too. I do kind of understand that the iPad, with more screen space is easier to design for but only since purchasing one of the new iPhones did I realise how much more usable they have become.
I am experience a little buggish or sticking with this app.
Is it just me or is anyone else not experiencing non-optimal performance?
Runs fine for me on Air 1. Some glitches when switching screens but I would expect that.
Glitch free and no sluggishness on an iPad 3 here. Are you running monster synths in the background?
We still need more of them on the iPhone! :-)
Could you please consider making your apps for iPhone? There are several of us that are using iPhones exclusively, and these would be great apps for us! :-)
Yes please!!!
Yes, and then we'll buy the app again!! :-)
I use mine exclusively. I have an iPhone 6 Plus, and it is basically a iPad Micro. It's awesome and ultra-portable, and I'm able to do almost everything on it without the need for an iPad--I just need developers to start getting them and seeing how awesome they are! :-)
HUMBUG (mutters the non-iPhone 6 owner
Keep up the good work Audiojunkie!
So I bought this anyway. Absolutely brilliant! The interface has no fat to it, nothing is there that doesn't need to be and the 'hold' feature is pretty genius. (A bit too genius at first but I figured it out once I put my drink down
As I hoped, it pairs really nicely with Patterning (which also needs to get with the iPhone!) and triggering notes Thor and SunVox has been easy, even for me.
I would like to echo @Samu's request for other timings. Triplets would be great but I wonder whether speed could be all the steps between 1 and 32 for those of us who like to go off grid a bit further.
Honestly though, this is a brilliant app and I appreciate the hard work and taste that went into making it so simple. You would gain a shed full of happy iPhone users if you were to simply push this out as is. Is there an option to do the opposite of letterboxing? Maybe even move the bottom buttons to one of the side areas..
It just scares us more mobile music creators when a dev says they may consider 'porting' to iPhone once a lot of other tasks are done. When my daughter was younger she figured out that, if an adult answered a request for something with "I'll think about it", they really meant "no, but I'm not going to tell you because I think you will forget about it"
I have a regular 6 (iPad nano?) and totally agree that it's a great music platform. I can't make the thing choke. Think we need to wait until the 5 and 4 models really die out to see another big uptic in phone apps with great UIs. As it is now, it's androidish with target destinations (4, 5, 6 and 6plus are all different). Crafting experiences for that many sizes has got to be a lo$ing proposition for developers so we're, for the most part anyway, still in scaled smallest common denominator land (4s) with occasional larger screen niceties.
Even then, I imagine it will just become the 6 as the default experience and the 6 plus as a scaled version. Unless the developer has a 6 plus.
Ok, my idea regarding the note input would only apply when 'hold' is active/blinking.
This would make it easier to add/remove drum-hits/notes on a step.
(Hopefully this post works, apparently my posts got stuck in the anti-spam filter).
Anything midi for iPhone, plus midi over Bluetooth LE support - makes a lot of sense from a user perspective because you can use your iPhone as a midi controller / sequencer for your iPad and then fiddle with the ipad synth(s)' controls on the iPad screen at the same time.

Really like the look of the interface, for reasons I can't really articulate. As others said above, it's not like this app really does anything that other sequencers we have already do. But if it does so in an a more accessible interface layout that makes it easier to get to work and get inspired, there IS value in that.
I'll take a look - if it were universal it'd be an insta-buy because I agree it would be great on iPhone. But it does look like one of those "cool" apps I buy and then end up touching maybe a half dozen times.
Ok @artkerns, bug report time. Nothing too major you'll be glad to hear.
1/ when the pattern finishes playing the BPM gets set to 0.0 and pressing start again after makes the track play fast. More irritating than anything, especially if you have for gotten what tempo you set.
2/ if you switch a track away from using the internal sound, it sometimes gets a stuck note.
And a few requests based on a couple of days play:
3/ can the speed be applied per pattern rather than per track? it surprised me that it didn't work this way.
4/ MIDI export would be nice.
Am enjoying exploring with MIDIsteps. The main draw for me is combining different length patterns with different timings and harmonies or dis-harmonies as I see fit.
I tried recording this driving patterning, iFretless bass and Thor to record simultaneously into cubasis and the whole thing blew up when I clicked start. Oddly though when I tried the same through AudioBus into Cubasis it recorded fine. Don't know who might be interested in that but thought it worth mentioning.
@Jocphone I've experienced bugs 1/ and 2/ but have not found a repeatable way to reproduce them
@artkerns A request to add 'play mode' in addition to record/transp/pattern to allow live-jamming over the currently selected/playing pattern without deleting or adding notes to the pattern.
In 'play-mode' it could maybe also be possible to 'set' the current step by touching a step and if the finger is held on the step it would repeat until released?
Other ideas that would be cool is to add selectable ratcheting/repeat to a step (ie. divide the time by x per step and re-trigger the step).
The requested Midi-Export would be very handy. A simple 'performance recorder' to create a midi-file of the performance would put it over the top.
It's been long time since I've enjoyed an app as much as this
1/ happens every time I play till the sequence stops. Is it supposed to stop?
2/ in a sequence with slow sustained notes switch form sound to none mid-note and it keeps playing.
Not used the modes yet. Clicked the button but was expecting something to start recording.
Agreed, I can see this being very useful and inspiring.
Super emphatic +1!
Love this one too. You can almost do this now by setting start and stop to the same step, just not as quick as a single touch. I really like that you can trigger the step's note(s) when touching it so if something like this were added I'd really want a way to do both! Greedy, I know.
As an extension to your idea, for the Universe of infinite time and infinite Kerns, how about: 1 finger = loop this step, 2 fingers = loop between these two steps, 3 or more fingers = play only these steps. All would benefit from some sort of 'capture' that would reset the loop start and end as well as mutes for any steps if fingers >= 3. That way you could play and 'remix' or whatever and have it jump back to the way it was or use it as a way to create new patterns.
@syrupcore Cool ideas, the 'three-finger' would almost be like a forward arpeggio based on the selected steps.
This midiSTEPs definitely has potential for me to replace the other step-sequencers (MidiSequencer, Koushion, Little MidiMachine etc) for good.
Being as inspirational as it is, the ideas just keep on flowing (both musical and ides for improving the app).
@Jocphone the record/transp/pattern are as follows.
I'll see if I can reproduce the tempo issues. I've just sometimes noticed the playback is 'slow' and only checked if my settings were correct and at next playback everything was ok again never analysing what happened.
@artkerns If this app ever gets an integrated 'synth' it would be rude not to make it a close optionally 'polyphonic' replica of the SH-101
For now I'm enjoying sequencing Boom 808!, Epic Synth, Sunrizer and Magellan with midiSTEPs (No AB for now since I'm piping the output to my MacBook Air using the USB-Lightning Cable).
