Multicontroller setup + iPad + MBP w/Ableton

Hi all

I have been assembling a mini studio which I'm trying to keep compact for space reasons - it all jigsaws into a mini desk next to my bed! However I get all my kit 'unpacked' for recording so that I have a Korg Microkey 37, padKontrol and Allen & Heath Xone 1d and iPad Mini arranged around my r/Macbook Pro. I use Ableton as my main DAW, although have just bought Logic Pro also. I have numerous apps on the iPad that I want to feed into Ableton, so I was thinking the iConnect Midi 2 for that... Perhaps with a powered USB hub to route the other 3 controllers in also via iCM2. However, am I missing a trick with all the Midi in/out available on the padKontrol and in/out/thru on the Xone 1d? Its there a better way to arrange this setup to maximise workflow then the iCM2? Perhaps an all-in one audio/midi interface - would the AKAI EIE audio/MIDI work with this?

I have an ART USB Dual Pre interface but could always sell this if the AKAI EIE audio/MIDI is a better/viable option.

On the iPad I use Audiobus, Animoog, iMs-20, iMini, iSem, iKaossilator, Patterning and Loopy HD. I use a few apps on my iPhone too, like iElectribe, DM1 and SunrizerXS. I can use AB remote to combine these perhaps - I have not looked into this yet...

I also use touchAble on iPad for Ableton at times.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Dave

Do you own a cck camera connection kit? A small usb audiointerface like the behringer uca222, maybe, together with one or two of your midi devices merged via usb hub for one idevice, bluetooth or wifi network for midi connections between your iphone, ipad, macbook pro? Finally have you tried studiomux, musicIO?
What's a typical workflow of yours, you can then distribute your controllers accordingly?

Hi crzycrs, thanks for the reply, appreciated.

My workflow currently involves the Xone 1d OR Microkey and padKontrol into Ableton via USB. I also use touchAble over wifi of course in this setup. All my iPad synths/drums I simply use with Loopy HD and then export the audio, which I arrange in Ableton after. I want to intergrate some of these iPad apps into Ableton directly.

Thanks for the tip on MusicIO, that looks like what I'm looking for. However, I'm wondering if the iCM2 will be somehow better (as you can probably tell, I'm just starting out and have assembled all this in the past few months)? What are the pros and cons of both? The price difference is significant of course and since I can connect the lot via USB I'm not sure the iCM2 offers many advantages?

  • Charging the IPad might be a concern here.
I don't think that's possible while using midi over USB.
ICM2 can provide that when used with external power supply.

Interconnecting them, by all means, apollo midi over bluetooth and midimittr, touchable mini on iphone and over ab remote and additional hardware (I have a similar 'secondhand' setup), is very interesting, even more with musicIO and studiomux, midiflow, parallel (into my bedroom 'studio' pa), sometimes I won't be turning on the computer ...
