iM1 vs Darwin

I know you cannot play combis within Darwin in Gadget- but what else?- it does not seem very clear to me.
Some things I read suggest everything but combi's- and others it's as though it's practically the sounds from the iM1 only that you get. Is there much sound sculpting available in the Darwin? Do you still get the Kaoss pads to play with?
ps- would you say the Darwin is any good for EDM/ Techno etc.
Thanks

I think it sounds super dated for the most part. Pumped through some effects like Flux and CS Spectral I can get some interesting sounds but really for EDM Techno I would go with Synthmaster if you just want 'get up and go' contemporary sounds with a couple flexible xy pads with very decent sculpting. Synthmaster is an amzing value if you get the in app purchase pro version, something like 800 patches for 12$ !!

But yes there are more parameters with iM1 compared to Darwin... I had a lovely afternoon of making 90s New Age homages... And wishing I saved my money.

  • I hear you @AudioGus, but I have also heard people complain/comment that to their ears Synthmaster is too generic/dated as well :) I don't agree, but there are a lot of courses for these horses. Especially, as you note, once you add in the effects slot...

yah I am not exactly up on EDM and we do live in a world where five to ten years ago is ancient history to some. Really in the right hands anything has potential but in terms of a big cache of presets (which I see iM1 as) I just think Synthmaster is likely more in line with what he is talking about. ideally a super flexible synth with a mastery of technical synthesis skills trumps all of course.

  • I find iM1 sits nicely alongside other synths in my tracks - I probably wouldn't use it for solos but it beefs up a track nicely is it

  • There's not much tweaking in darwin, filter cutoff/resonance/attack/release/fx amount...just the bare minimum

but if you have gadget you absolutely own to yourself to get it with it s the sound packs, it s basically a much much better version of Marseille

Even if gadget just had it's sequencer and Darwin it would still be one of the best iOS app

  • Tried iM1 and returned it. Sounded v dated, but a matter of taste. Synthmaster was a great purchase however. Lots of great sounds, limited in what you can do to them, but v handy to have around

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Is it possible to save edited Darwin patches?

I've completely missed something obvious if you can. Or Korg have completely missed something obvious if you can't!

    Any clues?

  • I don't know of a way. Keep in mind that M1 is for some reason pretending that it's still 1990 and there's only enough computing power for 2 user banks which can be taken inside Gadget, obviously our devices (here in 1990) cannot handle anything beyond that.

  • It just seems a strange omission. Every other Gadget synth lets you save patch changes.

  • Yes, you can save them to the user cards, and then use them in Gadget.

Bingo. Funny way of saving (or confusingly odd maybe), and a bit long-winded what with the extra step, but worth it when worth it etc.

  • Everybody has their own taste. The way I look at the iM1 is that it's great addition to mkell424's musical labatory. The days of trying to make hit records is gone. Now it's all about the fun. :)

Cheers, but I get that. That's when you run iM1 standalone. But when you tweak a patch in Darwin you can't seem to store any changes you make. I know there's only a few parameters, but it would be nice to ba able to recall any changes in different projects rather than starting from scratch each time.

  • Neither. Synth master or Darwin would be my choice for a synth with editing capabilities. Both are weak in that department compared with many others . However, I was not even aware you could use Synthmaster inside Gadget ? Synthmaster would not work at all for his need correct?

  • No synthmaster does not work in gadget.
