VIDEO..midiSTEPs and midiLFOs by Arthur Kerns, Demo for iPad
Just me blundering my way through midiSTEPs and midiLFOs, considering I'm a self confessed MIDIOT I think I did OK, and before all the midi experts tell me I'm doing it wrong in parts, I already know :-) http://thesoundtestroom.com/midisteps-and-midilfos-by-arthur-kerns-demo-for-ipad/

Well, that scared me more than anything else I think the adding of the LFO/CC app thingie (technical term) forced my brain to lock up go running from the room, but the midiSTEP part (Big Buttons!) looks cool and just about doable (by me).
This is great, thanks for making it! I learn so much by watching people use my apps, what makes sense to them, where they get stuck, what slows them down. I already have a couple ideas for changes after watching that, in particular all the app changing definitely makes me realize split screen is going to need to be a priority in the future.
It's a shame so many apps abandoned OMAC switching. Would be perfect here to jump directly from a track you're editing to the corresponding app. Or, since the app has some sounds in it, can you put it in the 'Bus?
@artkerns That's a good suggestion. You'll also be delivering functionality to those remaining on iOS 8.
@thesoundtestroom Off to watch the vid now.
@syrupcore @SpookyZoo yes originally the app was going to have a simple synth included and was going to use AudioBus. I took the synth out in favor of other more sequencer-related stuff, and am still undecided on whether the app should use AudioBus just for the app switching. The "Do you want to switch" dialog wrenches that Apple threw in the works with iOS 9 has me a little wary of what their eventual intentions are and if they will take further steps to limit switches. I'm a fan of AudioBus and am paying attention to how its being used, that's why I'm here, but I'd also like to keep the method consistent across all the MIDI apps I'm making. And it makes less sense on midiLFOs which I think is perfect for split screen. So I'm punting for a bit while I figure things out and try to read the tea leaves.
I also still need to buy an iPad that can let me try out true split screen. Being paralyzed with too many options is a common problem for me when making music, but I can't even add app switching or buy an iPad any more without it happening. Go with the Pro? An Air 2 on sale? A Mini 4? I'm waffling on a lot of decisions at the moment.
And maybe one week I'll decide to just put the synth in which would make the decision easy, who knows.
@artkerns I think it's great when non audio MIDI programs still show up in audiobus, as a dummy input source, because you can take advantage of the little sidebar triggers from within your sound making apps. Not just switching apps, but a Start/Stop button is great. That way you can make it shut up without having to navigate back to the sequencer app. Some pattern select triggers, something like, 1,2,3,4,5,6, in the audiobus sidebar could put it over the top!
Great apps. I'm all for you to make a good income from your apps @artkerns but I think more people will buy MIDI step at $4.99.
@artkerns Definitely appreciate Audiobus support for midi apps for the reasons stated by @Processaurus. Having a simple synth you can turn off and that doesn't use a lot of resources is nice too as it helps with testing, trouble shooting, and can add to the mix.
+1 for AB transport controls
Really struggling on this one. My concern is not really about the price being $10 vs. $5. The way music apps work, if you hit on a good one, you end up with $100 of value for a $10 purchase. But with sequencing apps, it's much more high risk/high reward...either this becomes a part of your work flow or it doesn't at all. And if I don't end up with a good reason to use it, it isn't really a good purchase at $3, let alone $10.
There's just many ways to do the things that this app seems to do well. Tony Saunders' midiSequencer does the chord features and basic note programming. Apps like Auxy (with MIDI output) can do the Ableton-style triggering thing. And a good MIDI-capable DAW like MultiTrackStudio or Cubasis really could do all of this with internal instruments as a compositional tool, and then later capture audio tracks via MIDI control.
Doug resisted the idea that this needs AB transport controls on their site, but my view on that is that if people are asking for it, then it probably is a feature that should have just been included. Yes, if you understand how to set up MIDI triggering (and if it friggin' works and doesn't lag behind the timing), you may not need transport controls. But what if I want to start or stop my DAW or a recorder from within the pattern triggering page of midiSteps? It's clear that the developer put a lot of work into live control elements on this sequencer, so if the app is asking you to operate things with midiSteps on your screen, then you probably need AB controls to make that work with other apps.
Overall, it's a very promising app - I may end up with it anyway, just can't say for sure that it's one I'll regularly use.
Having read the previous comment I can see the logic of this having triggers inside Audiobus, even better it had Remote Triggers, because .i don't use midi apps like this very often so I don't think outside the obvious when reviewing them
