Noob is stuck on the Bus - help!

I've only been working with the iPad music stuff for a few weeks now. I mostly 'get it' - but am having a real struggle having stuff on "The Bus" to play nice. Currently I keep getting stuck when trying to send a synth to Meteor - and no sound or music happens.
I'm trying to learn the editing steps in Meteor, and just need a little loop to work with.

Here are the current steps:
Launch AB
Select INPUT: Sunrizer or Magellan or similar simple input instrument. Ensure background audio is on.
Select OUTPUT: Meteor
Go to Meteor, set tracks, ensure background audio is on. Verify track is using AB, and the selected input instrument is attached.
Go to Synth - and no keys produce sound. So using the AB remote control - click the record button in Meteor, and it immediately turns red - I hit some keys - NO sound - silence gets recorded on Meteor. AND (as I mentioned in a previous question) Meteor records for some finite, short time, then stops.

So - where am I stepping on my weenie??? :-) I've had a few success at getting stuff over to Meteor, but always seem to get back to this bump in the road where I can't get any recording or play the input device. Now using a new iPad Air2 with iOS 9.02 and only the involved apps are running. This is REALLY getting frustrating because I don't think it should be this tricky!!

  • You might want to make sure you get sound with just the synth apps as input before adding meteor to the mix. If you have another DAW, you might want to try it in the output slot of Audiobus. I don't have Meteor but it hasn't been updated this year so you could check with their support people.

  • Yes - All instruments play just fine by themselves - the prob only occurs when going to Meteor. I'm beginning to thing Meteor may be the issue. Now taking a look at NanoStudio - just hope I can send stuff from other apps to it - like from Magellan or AniMoog... NS appears to not have a wave editor - only midi - but for basic learning that may just be enough.

  • Hi @seachord, NanoStudio is a very useful app that does have an audio editor but it won't sequence external apps (like Animoog, Magellan, Sunriser etc).

I can't say this will definitely work but you could try launching Meteor in the out slot first then launch your input slot.. OR- open Meteor and whichever synth you're using first, then start up AudioBus and launch in/out slots.. You MUST shut all apps down (swipe up) before trying a new start up combination.. Hopefully you find one that works.

  • Yeah - just sadly found out Nano isn't what I'm looking for... oh well - another $7 down the hole! I'll play with it later when I get a decent workflow going.

It keeps looking like Auria is the only Real game in town - have tried Multitrak DAW but didn't like the interface and look... but it does have a super reputation. May have to revisit that. As interesting as Auria looks - it seems like WAAAY overkill for a beginner just tinkering around...

I am very religious about keeping the minimum apps running - wish there was an app that would flush all active apps! I'll try the sequences that you suggest...

  • Hi it took me months to find a good reliable workflow after coming up against a lot of frustrations but eventually I tried cubasis and I haven't looked back. I was reluctant at first due to the price but it is the first app that I have had full songs put together using all my other synths, drum machine and samplr. I like that I can choose either iaa or use audiobus to record into cubasis and then progress from there, once you get used to the controls it's a breeze.

  • Cubasis or Garageband would be other potential options for you to consider. Cubasis is simpler and more straightforward than Auria, but more featured and flexible than GB.

  • Cubasis could save you much time and money. Also consider Steinbergs history and experience.. I've never needed any other DAW.

  • Cubasis would be my suggestion for getting good results easily also. There is a reason why it is so widely used and it is certainly not just how great it looks, it is dependable and gets the job done every time.

  • 100% agree with all above. As a newbie back in May, I listened to all the advice that the wonderful, experienced people on this forum gave me. I never thought i would stop using GB but after getting Cubasis (it was on sale) I have never looked back. All the effects that come with it, insert or send, deserve a mention as (like I was told) it cuts down on power usage, (is that the correct term, still learning). So, so happy I took everyone's advice.

  • Also worth a check to see what's working on iOS 9, ask here in the forum before making purchases if I were you.

  • Yeah - hind sight is so clear now. For what I've frittered away on 'trying' various DAWs I could have gotten Cubasis...
The Noobies lament! Guess I better go back and look again... but... $50???? Perhaps if I can get a refund on some of the failed DAWS it might make it less painful.

  • @seachord yes I'd try and get some refunds especially if they don't work, your on iOS 9, at the moment, lots of apps are just being updated for it, so it will take some time for things to settle down on it, what may work on previous iOS versions may not on 9, you need to workout what sort of apps you need, Midi or more a live play and record audio etc. and different DAWs use completely different workflows with some overlap. Fear not though save up your money BF and CM are not far away, usually bargains to be found, search out apps that interest you, ask on the forum for advice about them especially if anybody is using them on iOS 9, then pick them up when you can, also check out the guys at the soundtestroom, they check out lots of apps, posting videos on YT.

  • AH - the good old SoundTestRoom - almost every app I've snapped up is because it looked so cool on their demos! And of course I only found this forum AFTER have making a few extraneous purchased. They make it SOOO easy... LOL! My interest is strictly iPad app-to-app via AB - and maybe an Akai keyboard later - but first have to develop a decent workflow and some music-making skills.
