Cheap Portable Recorder

Hi guys.

I've been away. Work work work. I stopped making music altogether but know I'm trying to get back to it. Still trying to figure out a workflow using my ipad and macbook pro.

But I wanted to ask:

What is the nicest cheapest portable recorder?

I've been writing short movies. Directing them. And my grandmother made the proposition to write some stories about her life and then hand them over for me to put them into scripts. But know she asked me to get her a recorder. For her to just talk into the recorder.
So I'm looking at below zoom h1. And an iPhone is out of the equation. :)

If you think this discussion does not belong in this forum I will immediately delete it.

Thank you guys.

  • Don't have a great answer for you, but trust that others might, just wanted to say that however you do it, make sure you do do it :) I would flip burgers to buy an iphone/whatever if I could get either of my dear (departed) grandmothers down on tape now.

    Good luck!

  • I was thinking you might say something. :)

By the way. I don't know if I shouldn't say this in public. But I didn't go to school. Figured I wouldn't care to act in english. I like the portuguese language. :) More than Portugal or Portuguese people. I know. I'm a monster.

I did the film with my father and planned to send you some pictures. I was on my way to finish to processing to deliver them to the producer and then a few to you. But I recently erased 7200 photos. ALL of my photographic work. I'm a bit depressed.

Anyway. Johnny. Thank you once again. I will think about what you said about the burgers. This feels very important.

@Macao95 We are all monsters my friend, only our flavor and a little of our clothing (our culture and our language) separate us, but even then not by so very much.

I am sorry about The 7200, however I am going to save you the pep-talk/lecture, but it would be based around the old thing of: Fall down seven times, get up eight.

And yes, you erased the pictures, but don't forget, you also took them, and that is an experience itself. Keep going. Go listen to your grandmother. Hear her memories of her experiences before they too are deleted from you.

    Keep on.

  • I'm not sure what you guys are referring to, but I hope all is well.

As for portable recorder, the zoom q2hd is very good and has the advantage of also doing video if you should need it. It can function as just an audio recorder though.

  • @Macao95 "But I recently erased 7200 photos. ALL of my photographic work. I'm a bit depressed."

Sorry about those photos. Were the photos on the Mac or iPad? There may be ways to recover them from either device. If you have already looked into that then my condolences...

  • As usual, everything Johnny said = +2 from me (one for the content, one for the delivery).

Not sure about Portugal but my local craigslist is full of inexpensive portable recorders. Find th easiest to operate and get that one. Or get an tape recorder. Fidelity does not matter - capturing with the fewest possible barriers is what counts. Shit, have her call your voicemail and dish it out. Or find some internet service that offers the same, "call this number and talk" is the sort of thing grandmas can get!

Look forward to hearing it. Was lucky enough to get my in laws before they passed (on a zoom h1, actually). Do do do do it. Ignore the tech and do it.

  • I'm currently using a Zoom H2.n, it's really pretty good, (and cheap). It's even better with external microphones.
    It's small too.

  • This is such a good idea, I'm going to get my grandmother a H1 and a 32 gb card for Xmas. 50 hours on wav recording

  • Tape recorder bro! IT has been amazing. The pressman by sony rules face and has audio in and a fair mic. Then you have the lovely tape sound for 20$! Cheers
