I've made a few things with it, but they're too weird - even for my avant kidneys.
I did this one with Egoist, using a 4 bar loop from a Madhouse 8 track by Prince. It's not a finished product. I like it because it flies in the face of Prince, Mr. "Sample Watchdog" himself, in that it's totally unrecognizable.
Hmmm. The Avant Kidneys....might work.
Tis still kickin' here on iOS 8
Robotics drums can trigger sounds via midi out. So you can use external sounds. It also works well for appegiation and baselines.
You could also try futzing around in Filtatron as illustrated by Doug in one of his soundtestroom videos, or any suitable reverb app.
By the way I both love and use Sector, Egoist but frequently I only have access to my phone. Patterning is too cool for words and could also fill that "random" feel role, but again if you're like me (mostly phone) you can try Poly and/or Necklace.
can't wait till patterning goes universal.....just ...can't....wait...
Besides the above mentioned, iKaossilator works great. ..you can put 5 loops in, clear recording and jam away
soundklinik what do you mean by 'clear recording' ?
I do enjoy Egoist on the ipad, a very fun commute. The Egoist VST running in Reaper is where it really clicked for me as being super useful. Being able to separately record slicer, bass and each drum sound on the fly while jamming. You can even set up sixteen tracks to then bounce each slice number to a different track if you really want to noodle your mix. For kicks I just added Looperator, what a combo!
I think he means to clear the preset, then load different rhythm parts, and jam away, creating pseudo random riffs.
thanks knewspeak I got you translating overtime for me today
Wow, thanks eveyone! Some great tips here! I do love the idea of Rock Drum Machine @bsantoro! totally forgot it you can randomize in there, so thanks. And @PhilW defiantly sounds like worth trying out Fugue Machine into other apps!! So many great ideas coming out here. Love this community!
You mentioned not necessarily electronic beats - didn't see it mentioned yet - DrumJam might work here and there for you.
I've been loving Patterning for creating variations and randomness.
The nice thing is there are lots of different ways to achieve this... Here's what i do typically:
Set up the basic beat with kick, snare and a hat pattern
go to the toms, bleeps, noises etc.. in slots 5-8 and then start messing with some randomness and variation
you throw some hits in and use the RND parameter which will just create random hits... you can control the frequency by placing fewer or more hits, and I believe you can get them happening 'off the grid' by having an odd number of divisions (e.g. 11 not 16). Also you can change the playback speed of that circle. I just mess around with these things until it starts to sound just right.
alternatives are: using the likelihood setting (I never bother TBH, I just use the above technique), having it use one of the pendulum functions, or having it play very slowly and have a non standard number of subdivisions (e.g. 27 or something)... then it will occasionally, and never at the same time, throw in a weird hit or sound effect.
You can of course midi out all of this - so get it playing and recording in Gadget for example - or just use the lovely in built sounds - or your own sounds imported.
I've also worked out a great way to do snare and kick fills... it's pretty obvious I guess but you just create a few duplicate patterns that have lots of extra snare and kick hits in these patterns (or hits in different places) and then as your looping round just jump to these patterns and back over a the space of a quarter, half or whole bar... I do this just using the thing in the top right of the main circle page and just flick around between 3 or 4 different patterns when i want to vary from my main pattern. It works remarkably well. (There may be a way to do this from the song page but TBH i've never felt the need to build a song - I just mess around 'live' and record the audio).
Gotta love Patterning... It doesn't do tat much that you couldn't probably achieve elsewhere with a bit of effort - but it does it so ridiculously nicely and easily that it's just a FULL JOY to use and the results are fast and fantastic.
Other random type midi out apps to try pointing at your drums are "Poly" and "Rhythm Necklace"
Once upon a time Stochastik
wow, Stochastik
>
yes once upon a time it was a instant buy for me too....but seems its not longer in dev....
like stochstic-creation tools, and stochastik sounds and works good in the first hours, but without Mute/Solo Options per Track....knocked it out of my live set.....& delete it.
Drumjam have really cool random options, you can FIX/unFix every LoopTrck if its change RAND. between a range of BARS etc....
USER GUIDE:
RANDOM PARTS BUTTON – This keeps the same instrumentation but randomises the part that each instrument is playing. (Made clear by having musical notes in the icon). There are on average of around twenty different patterns for each instrument. Taking into account the number of instruments available, this amounts to millions of variations possible.
Each change of pattern will occur on the next loop start point. All the loops are two bars long so you won’t have long to wait! You can see how close to the next loop cycle start point you are by referring to the flashing tempo bar. When a random change is pending, this will also be announced in the flashing tempo bar. Instruments that are locked in the Parts page will not be changed when a randomize action is performed.
RANDOMIZE OPTIONS - Opens a separate page.
AUTO RANDOMIZE LOOPS - MIN - Determines the smallest interval of time in bars that the loop parts will be randomised, whilst keeping the instruments the same.
AUTO RANDOMIZE LOOPS - MAX - Determines the longest interval of time in bars that the loop parts will be randomised, whilst keeping the instruments the same.
AUTO RANDOMIZE INSTRUMENTS – MIN - Determines the smallest interval of time in bars that the instruments will be randomized.
AUTO RANDOMIZE INSTRUMENTS – MAX - Determines the longest interval of time in bars that the instruments will be randomized.
RANDOM INSTRUMENT COUNT – Determines how many instruments will be randomized. There is a minimum and maximum.
INSTRUMENT CHOICES - This takes you to an instrument list where you can easily select or deselect instruments for randomization. When Randomize Instruments is active, only the selected instruments (all by default) will be randomly picked from.
Different Drummer's newly released ver 4 pushes it up a bit in my view.
That's saying a lot!
thanks @Brain, I didn't think of DrumJam for some reason. And appreciate the tips from the user guide @obiwahnkentobi. DrumJam's interface is not easy for me to intuitively comprehend but I'll give it a shot. And Drum Perfect is even more confusing to me. I have to re-learn how to use it every time I go back.
great tips on Patterning @Matt_Fletcher_2000. I think I'm going to try this first. And Poly and Rhythm Necklace. A bit overwhealming at times. I'm just going to pick one for now and I think its going to be Patterning. But no matter what, I always feel like I'm missing out not trying them all. But it seems like that path leads to madness.
@gkillmaster You're welcome. I only thought of it because just the other day I was making up my own drum kits in DJ and letting the randomization show me the way!
And the way you kids go on about this Patterning app, I sure wish it could come live in my iPhone!
@gkillmaster
If you want to focus on one app then I think Patterning ought to be the one. It's great for making it just random and varied enough - but not too much. And the built in sounds are great. Plus you can add more of your own.
Plus you get automation of effects etc.
Just go for it with Pattering. It's lovely.
i think Mint iO has randomizer on drum sequencer also
Patterning.
