Roland PD-8 or PD-5 for Impaktor?
Ok I think @supadom uses the 8 but I think he mentioned that the dual zone triggers don't work with impaktor, so I am thinking of getting a 5. Anyone got one or suggest why the 8 is better or worth spending more on?
I just realized I have an interface I can use with my iphone to make a standalone impaktor rig. All I need is the pad.
It's just a line output from these roland trigger pads right?
Comments
Yes, it's just an audio jack out of the pad into your audio interface. The PD8 output is triggered from either the main pad or the rim (single output). PD8 is very responsive and great fun with Impaktor. The '8' is a good size to play on, But I think the '5' may be a bit small to play with hands. I got mine for £20 on eBay
Thanks yeah I can get the pd-8 for $70 or the pd-5 for $50 hmm
My local drum shop, which sells both new and used gear, had a bunch of old single-zone Yamaha pads (TP65) for $25 each. For something designed to be played with sticks it is surprisingly responsive even when played with fingers. You might have luck finding one if you have a similar store in your area.
I've since made my own trigger pad for live use with hand drumming, and the Yamaha is now mounted to my V-drum kit so I can trigger Impaktor when jamming at home.
@MirEko - Found some PD8's on CraigsList in my area (Houston) for $25.
@ALL - Going to check on them this week. Take my Audio interface and cable along to test. Do you just use a regular 1/4 TS jack and mono cable (like a electric guitar cable) for the PD8? Or do you have to custom wire a cable to work?
All of them probably would make do but I have to say that the pd 9 I'm using with 10" diameter feels absolutely great. Reminds me a lot of one of my full size djembes. Not sure if I'd like it smaller as it might be harder to hold but not having tried one it's a pointless opinion I guess.
I spent a couple of hours with impact or today programming fat harmonic square bass sounds. FULL JOY
Nice
Noted, I'll have a look for a pd-9
Gear tends to be harder to find in Australia
I just hooked it up to an old PDX-8 (mesh version) I had kicking around and it works beautifully! So much more sensitive than my Wavedrum. (which is now being sold!). I wish I had tried this before
BTW, I'm using a stereo cable becuase the PDX-8 is dual trigger. One trigger for the pad and one for the rim. I have a dual phono cable going into a single stereo 1/4" jack (via Y cable to covert the phono cables to a single stereo), which plugs into the pad. I'm sure it'll work with mono too but these are the cables I had lying around.
From what I understand the developer is looking for a dual trigger controller for impaktor 2. This is old news though.
@Supadom I love the vids you posted previously with saucepans etc. i'm thinking of hooking something up to my Cajon. I have a faulty CY8 which I'm thinking of dissecting!
I had the same idea but you won't get away with it for live work as the resonance /vibration inside the cajon will retrigger impaktor. This is why drum triggers (solid plastic /rubber) are best imo. You'll be good with headphones though.
I wonder if the mesh head vdrums are better for hand playing?
What im doing wrong, please? I have yamaha mg10xu mixer connected to iphine as an interface with korg piezo mic connected to. When piezo is alone all is nice, when i do connect korg volca beats for example to the next free channel impaktor gets triggered from volca sound..? Im kinda new, still
@Goozoon as far as I remember impaktor only uses one of the 2 input channels. If you hard pan your piezo channel one way and volca the other you should be able to separate them.
The problem is that your volca will the be audible in only one channel which sucks. I'm not sure if that's necessarily the case though as I remember using 2 channel interface with audiobus some time ago and it worked fine.
thanks, i'll try
