What would YOU do with a cracked screen?

edited October 2015 in General App Discussion

I recently somehow cracked the top corner of my iPad mini retina. Though it really made me sad I bought a more durable case and tried my best to ignore it. Now the crack spread about two inches from the left side to the top corner. I'm super bummed and obviously don't want this to spread or impact my playing.
A couple of years ago I replaced an iPhone 3GS screen myself and honestly it felt a bit wonky. Imperfect touch response and a bit laggy. It could either be an installation failure on my part or could be the fact that it was a faulty cheapo from China through eBay...anywho the question is; would you replace it yourself, send it to a local independent repair shop, or take it to Apple? What was your experence like and what would you do if it happen to you (again)?

Thanks!

  • I know a computer shop near me does battery and screen replacement, not sure how much it costs though.

  • if you don't want it to spread, throw some clear tape on it and a little of the surrounding area and get a better case for the long term.

don't do a third party screen replacement if you want a long term solution -- they fail after time and won't be worth the $. I think the apple replacement is just with a new unit -- they don't do screen replacements on pads most of the time.

maybe just look at a refurb replacement iPad through apple? much cheaper than they used to be

  • I just put a screen protector on mine, stops the cracks spreading. Been like that for a few years now. Mine is seriously beaten up though. Has pieces of the screen missing haha :)

  • I'd get it fixed asap, would drive me nuts. Best bet is to try and find a 3rd party repair store, much cheaper than sending it back to Apple. My wife just had to replace a cracked screen on her iPhone6, Apple wanted $320 to do it, and we found a place locally that did it for $140 in 30 minutes. Looks like brand new.

@Tarekith - my wife did the same on her iphone. Went to a small shop on the high street. But the touch was much less sensitive. It was just about ok for a phone, but would have been no good for music.

  • if you sold it for £60 on eBay and added another £80 and bought a second hand one that would probably be your best bet. Not sure where you are but I've seen them going as low as £120 on eBay UK. No point getting stressed out with 3rd party repairs if there's a risk of lesser touch response or other issues.

Personally i'd tape it or add one of those sticky screen protecters and carry on using it. It may or may not get worse - and if it gets worse you can then decide what to do... but by then you might want to upgrade anyway.

I cracked my iPad mini 2 in both bottom corners a few months agao but ive put tape on them and it seems to be fine. I haven't put a cover on or anything - i'm just a bit more careful with it. My iphone 6 also cracked in the bottom corner the other day... but i'm leaving that and hoping it doesn't get any worse.

  • Mines been like this for 2 years now, still works like new. I can't get the screen replaced as the back is so damaged a new screen will just crack when installed
