Monoleap Free (for iPad)

A curious free midi controller, monoleap by Dan Bar-Yaakov

I've used the app now with Synthmaster, Alchemy, Sunrizer and Laplace.
Only one I had trouble with was Sunrizer. It was like the "hold" button was on.
The other synths worked perfectly.
Two helpful things for me, were to make sure I had my ipad lengthwise, not crosswise, and check out the note chart in the manual.
This app is quite a lot of fun. Many thanks to @knewspeak for the find!
All thanks to @danbar, for creating monoleap and for being an enthusiastic and responsive developer.

@danbar
Hey Dan, you mentioned a Cello. I would love to be able to play one;)
Does monoleap have coremidi?
@crzycrs Yes it does. you can use both wireless CoreMidi or using a MIDI over USB software (musicIO). The 'setting up' section in the PDF has a link to a tutorial on how to set up wirless CoreMidi from the iPAD. One thing I've been playing around with yesterday is an amazing free NI Reaktor ensamble for playing Strings (has Cello / Violin / Viola / Bass presets). It uses instrument modelling and plays only when the virtual 'bow' is moved (by receiving MIDI CC messages). You can easily map MonoLeap to the bow (I used the "right hand vertical" controller for this) and it's really cool. You can download the Reaktor patch at http://www.native-instruments.com/en/reaktor-community/reaktor-user-library/entry/show/7463/
Thanks @knewspeak and @High5denied for all the nice words Glad that you like the app. If you guys would like to get beta versions send me your email and I'll add you to the beta list. You'll then get updates to your device when I upload a new beta.
Thank you, Dan. Intuitive playing with a good instrument is key for inspiration.
Heard good things about Reaktor, on ios Thumbjam's or a soundfont Cello is nice, however there's no 'virtual port', i.e. monoleap as a midi input source is not visible/selectable?
Good luck!
@High5denied I've just tried it with Sunrizer and it works for me (great synth btw). Used it with the preset "18 saw lead" for example. Regarding the 'hold' problem you're experiencing, make sure that none of the monoleap sent MIDI CC values (in the all too pink settings screen) is by accident sending MIDI CC 64, as this CC value is used by sustain pedals.
Thanks @crzycrs. If you use musicIO (musicioapp.com) it should show as a MIDI input (I know it works like that in mac, not sure how it works on PC though). For iPAD apps such as Thumbjam, I don't think you need to specify any MIDI input if you're using iOS 9. From that version MIDI is routed automatically between apps with no need for any virtual port.
Ok fine @danbar, will do, thanks once again, take care.
Thanks @danbar for the info about midi and the Reaktor patch, I'll be giving that a go in a little while.
Ok just got it. wow. Playing is very enjoyable!
If anyone would like to post a review I'd really appreciate it. Got a single review (1 start) from someone complaining that it doesn't produce any sound..
Was having a play via ad-hoc into Live on my desktop, was having fun linking CC's to instruments, it kind of reminds me of being a kid again, playing the Tuba, only MonoLeap is more fun and portable. Did have a problem though from time to time it doesn't register my touches, overall the implementation of CC's is really good, if better control of note range, scale is implemented this will make an excellent controller.
Very promising app, tried it with Nave while Patterning was playing along. Later when I got home I hooked up Patterning with the Nord Drum 2, opened Nave + Monoleap and as soon as I touched the latter it kinda killed Patterning's MIDI out to the Nord Drum 2.... is it because Monoleaps 'universally' sends MIDI cc's to any other MIDI-compatible apps open or is it me missing something? Anyways, great app.
So.....Someone understands midi less than me? inconceivable.
I reviewed it on the 26th. I'll check to make sure it sent. Course I gave it 5 stars, cuz it's awesome. And, the developer is responsive and nice when corresponding with.
Oh, and it's free. Thank you!
Thanks @knewspeak. I'm solving various touch responsiveness issues for the next version so I think the playing experience should be much better soon. Great to hear you're having fun playing I played the saxophone a few years ago myself so I guess the idea kinda came from that. Regarding note range control, I'll also add an octave shift modifier so that, for example, moving a hand at some axis will shift octaves up and down.
@jooga1972, Thanks! I think your problem will be solved in the next version which will include a MIDI channel selection. That way you can make sure monoleap is sending to a channel other than the one used by Patterning. I'll give it a go myself and see if it solves the issue.
@danbar, really good to hear of your ideas for the app, tried to review MonoLeap on the AppStore but not to sure if it's been submitted yet, the AppStore has been quirky of late, my ChordPolyPad app is in a permanent state of trying to download it's update. I noticed several other forum members have posted about this and other quirky behaviour. I'll keep checking, it will be another 5 stars from me, thanks for your work.
Pretty neat, but I do find it has trouble sensing my touch on occasion. So sometimes I'll be using fingers 1 and 4 on both sides and it will send a very low note, and others it is very high. Other times I'll be playing along and it'll just stop playing for a bit even though my fingers haven't left the screen.
This is an iPad2 with IOS 8.4.1, if that makes any difference. And I was playing through Magellan.
Hey @fprintf. Yeah I've been handling many touch related issues for the upcoming version (including the removal of that accidental bottom notes that currently happens either when you have all four left hand fingers on the device or sometimes when finger 1 & 4 are on the device and 4 is a bit more down). Hopefully all of these will be ok in next week's update
@knewspeak thanks, I'll also check out your app, looks really cool.
the issue.
Cool, good news on the update, much look forward to it!
Just a quick question re setting up; will it work with an iconnectmidi interface?
@musikmachine, I haven't tested it yet but my guess is that it will work without a problem, since the app sends CoreMidi which works perfectly with such interfaces.
Thanks! I figured it would, just being lazy! i'll give it a test and let you know.
