Roland JU-06 First Impressions
Like some other people on the forum I'm interested in getting back into the hardware game with the new Moog, Circuit, and miniature Roland synths. I found some first impressions on the Juno synth.

Wait so this guy implies there's no MIDI CC out OR in?! Ugh that writer called it for me...that's a dealbreaker.
I was thinking the same thing. MIDI CC is a huge deal because most people like to have dynamic patches in a song. Very surprised Roland left it out.
has to be an oversight, I bet they change that in the future.
Their MIDI Implementation Chart tells the tale, and it's not good:

Hmm..I'm definitely a midi nerd dude (I build all own controllers and whatnot) and wasn't upset at all that these don't have midi cc. Just got the jp-08 on Friday and had a wonderful weekend moving sliders and knobs. To me that is much of the fun. Are folks just wanting to do automation, is that the need for midi cc?
The one thing I was slightly disappointed about was that these guys do not connect to the iPad. Was looking to use apps for midi control (just note triggering) but got an error in ios when all was connected (usb through powered hub). Perhaps because it's an audio interface as well that runs 24/96. Still a lot of fun. Built about 6 patches over the weekend that I'm looking forward to using in songs.
allot of their stuff is great but there are def headaches, the mx-1 mixer is also a sound card and also not class compliant, and also would be a wonderful mixer to run several iPads and iPhones through.
but yes automation

On the JU-06, I'm able to get MIDI (including Sync I/O) to work with iPad (as well as iPod touch) using lightning-to-USB and USB-to-MIDI-DINS cable. Soundprism, ChordPolyPad and StepPolyArp work as controllers, and DM1 syncs to and from, for instance.
It's also nice that you can pump audio through the line-in, to do things like sync a drum app to JU-06's step sequencer without needing a mixer to hear them together.
I'm with you @otem_rellik on the MIDI -- I was imagining some CC wheely-poppin' with the Octatrack, but I'm finding you can get a lot of movement in the sound of the JU-06 just from on-board envelopes and LFO stuff and what-not. And there are so many available avenues to sample and mangle if I want to go further, that also make me commit to audio faster.
I went the din route as well from my iconnect audio interface and all seems to work. Got my queno triggering notes now but could also use the iPad. I guess I was originally looking for a more portable option. I might pickup one of the boutique keyboards.
You can even skip the iconnect with an iPad as controller if you use a basic USB-to-MIDI cable (and USB camera adaptor on iPad) ... But yeah, I gather QuNeo always needs some third-party host and power supply. A shame there aren't more battery-powered (or bus-powered) MIDI controllers that can output straight to MIDI, w/o a USB host.
I wish I could directly connect OP-1 and JU-06 through MIDI, w/o iConnectMidi, for really nice portable combo ... Such a First-World Problem.
