iPad Audio By-Pass Using A FiiO E17 DAC and Headphone Amp

This is a comparison video between the internal headphone out audio from the iPad and it being by-passed by te FiiO E17 DAC and Headphone Amp, you'll get a much better comparison if you listen through your headphones, personally I think it makes a massive difference and is a much better way to mix down and then master your mixes http://thesoundtestroom.com/ipad-audio-by-pass-using-a-fiio-e17-dac-and-headphone-amp/

  • FiiO do some good audio equipment. For example FiiO X1 which is $99 plus you can use 128gb SD card for it. Basically, it cheaper option than getting another iPod. Or FiiO X3 or X5, but then obviously it gets more exspensive. Not bad stuff from China finest.

A very good point! that little old headphone jack on the iPad is a big bottleneck to getting a good mix. I am amazed at how many details I can simply pick up on running my ipad with the Roland Duo Capture EX. I loved it so much I now own two and use them in a lot of different ways. The midi is fantastic too. I am sure there are tons of options out there, but yes just getting out of that apple jack I think is a must if you want to push your mixing quality.

My Blue Mo-Fi headphones have a built in amp made by Fiio to exactly match the drivers' impedance. There is a bass boost mode that gives +4.5 db at 65 Hz with a wide Q for tracks that need it. To bypass the iPad audio entirely I plug into an iTrack Dock and use the provided 1/4" jack. The Mo-Fi amp can be turned off to get a fairly flat response for mixing. The SonicTouch guys did a video last year where they rave about them for an hour.

About the cost of a set of ATHM 50s + that Fiio amp you demo + another 100. Got mine on a sale for much less, 189. Highly recommend these phones. May be on an upcoming holiday sale.

Can you use the camera connection kit and just plug it directly into the ipad? That would be my interpretation given what it says on the apple store. looks like it has a usb connector to do so. Or is that just for charging?

Oh man this looks so sexy... I am a total sucker for hardshell cases for headphones...

  • I never tried it that way with the iPad, but that is how it works with the Laptop, I don't think it would work on an iDevice like that

  • The USB is for the battery charger. No audio.

I@TedBPhx if using it on the laptop/desktop etc the USB is used for audio and charging, as long as the output is set to USB

  • You're talking about the Fiio, I'm referring to the Mo-Fi. I thought that's what @AudioGus meant because of the image.

  • Oh yes, I was refering to the Mo-Fi. Shame it doesnt do usb audio.

  • Oh yeah, sorry, my error

  • How good is it Doug I could here quite a difference however was reading What HiFi which only gave it 3 stars and said it could be more punchy and not a class leader. I like the look of it and the control you get with it. Was eyeing up the HRT streamer which has a better write up and similar price anyone own this model?

    http://www.whathifi.com/hrt/microstreamer/review

What DAC full audio interfaces can readers recommend ?

  • Further to my last the Fiio E7 model at £65 get 5 stars on What HiFi so may add that to my Xmas list !

  • There is a newer version now too, I did a bit of research before I got one and for the price the E17 did very well, I like it because you can use it in many different ways with different things, computer, iPhone, iPad, actually it will improve the sound of most things you care to bang through it, the OLED display is very easy to read, it's heavy, is very well built

  • Has anyone used any alternatives to the FiiO? I started looking and the Creative Sound Blaster E5 got lots of good reviews and has some great features but most of the reviews seemed to be from gamers. Then again lots of people seem to swear by those little Behringer UCA things. Anyone got links to good comparisons/roundups?
