Any software based midi controllers out there with this level of control?

I've seen a lot of different ios midi controllers. Anything that could emulate this directly on an iPad?

Lemur maybe?

  • You might want to look into TC-Data by Bit Shape as it uses relationships between touches on the screen to send midi or osc data.

Lemur has a lot of options, and TC Data or Konkreet Performer and other apps may get close to AlphaSphere. Although a simple MIDI keyboard can trigger sounds with velocity. Or polyphonic aftertouch.

I like the interface of AlphaSphere. It certainly isn't a bad idea to get one.

  • Orphion - using it as a midi controller with midi out?

  • Good suggestions but I'm not sure any of the apps listed could capture the complexity required. You would need 3 - 4 octaves worth of individually programmable buttons (note, channel, parameters, aftertouch for each), and possibly the ability to apply a scale or chord to a set of buttons, for convenience. It would look something like a programmable version of Launchpad or Thumbjam.

  • I'd say TC-Data, Beatsurfing, or a DIY Lemur template, but then I don't know what it's doing exactly, triggering samples, synths, is it configured to play a limited set of triggers/parameters for that song only?

TC Data can theoretically do most of that. Sort of...

    • The screen could cover 3-4 octaves (at a stretch) and could easily be restricted to a scale or chord.

    • Each finger touch (up to 10 touches) can be given it's own note (on it's own channel I believe), and I believe it's own aftertouch, and probably it's own cc send (although you need to think creatively about how you do this).

It's pretty powerful once you work it out.

It wouldn't be the same (the iPad is not a sphere for a start) but you could probably design something getting some way there with some work (if you're able to get your head round it). Try TC-Performer (not too expensive) if you want to get a feel for it first.

You could also try looking at monoleap (although this is chromatic and takes some learning to play) but it gives you something quite tactile and it sends 4 different midi cc's. I can't vouch for it myself though - i've not bothered to learn how to play it!
