iPad and volca clock sync
Has anyone managed to successfully sync their device to any of the volcas?
I'm seeing YT videos of people syncing using a sync app installed on a third device via WIST but firstly apparently it stopped working since iOS 8 and frankly using an extra device just for syncing sound like a great waste so even if it had worked I wouldn't go that route anyway. I had volca bass for a while but when I sent a clock to it from my midi out via din to small jack converter, volca would run 3 x the original speed.
I sold my volca because of this but I'm wondering if there is a way of doing it after all. I'm eyeing up Volca Sample but I won't get it if there's no solution for syncing to iPad.
Anyone?

I haven't tried this yet, but maybe this might work? It's free.
KORG SyncKontrol for monotribe by KORG INC.

@supadom
This SyncKontrol is what I've used to slave volca sample to iPhone, which was in turn slaved to iPad wirelessly via Little Midi Machine, which sent clock via WIST, and was clock for whatever else on iPad that I ran..
I had heard WIST was broken since 8 also, but turns out it ain't (except Synkontrol itself which receives but doesn't send. It's place in this rig works because it's recieving WIST but not sending, it's sending the cv ticks via hardline)
WIST works, via Bluetooth for all kinds of Korg stuff and others (the excellent and free Little Midi Machine, here)
I just sync my Volca Beats using its external midi sync mode. Why mess with Wist or other sync apps?
I think I was using cv to sync the volca because I'm using it live with teenage engineering POs, (which only relieve cv sync) and wanted to chain the 4 devices freely in whatever order. Then I figured out the order, and the volca is the primary I use to send cv to the little guys. So yep hard wired midi from iPad into volcas external midi would be so much easier.
Well, I was doing exactly that (pointing loopy at volca) but for some reason it would play 3 times the speed. What app did you use to send the clock?
@Littlewoodg: WIST works, via Bluetooth for all kinds of Korg stuff and others (the excellent and free Little Midi Machine, here)
Hang on but in this case it looks the little midi machine sends note messages rather than clock. This ain't a bad idea but the I suppose I wouldn't be able to use volca's on board sequencer?
It is a really tough call because I just bought the midi to cv jack cable off eBay so for all I know it could have been the wiring that was causing the x 3 speed in volca. I don't know enough about this to speculate but I have a feeling there is a simple solution to this.
@supadom since the Volca's take an analog sync signal, it essential works as a gate where the signal is sent whenever the sound is loud enough and turns off when it falls below. You can use the audio output of an iOS device to control the tempo of the Volca by adjusting the volume dynamics of the audio sent out to its sync in.
@supadom with the Volca Sample, I've used the iRig MIDI with the din connector and the midi clock seems to work fine.
Wow, really? Audio definitely sounds less enigmatic than midi. So if I sent an audio click track to volca it should listen to that? I guess I will have to mess with the frequency of ticks to get it to sync correctly. Perfect, I'll try that next time I have a volca on my hands, thanks!
That's what i did when i had the volcas as well.I created a small pulse click and sent it out on an unused interface audio output. The timing in this case was ROCK solid.Although It was a little trial and error before i had the perfect clock signal.
Square wave click should do the trick. Despite the fact that they use mini jack for CV it never occurred to me to feed it audio. Great tip. Thanks
I've been syncing my volcas via MTS well without any problems, I don't think.
Yeah you can sequence it with any iOS sequencer, I do it all the time with Cubasis. It has a pretty good midi implementation. Volca beats is fun to play live with an electronic kit or QuNeo, sequence some stuff, then record it down while tweaking the knobs.
@supadom
My set up was Little Midi Machine sending clock only, though it sends clock and notes per your choice. The clock via WIST to Synckontrol on my phone which sent the cv clicks via wire to volca
Cool thanks @Littlewoodg I'll probably go with the simplest method which is sending the clock via an audio out straight into the sync in. I have a click track in all of my loopy sessions because I normally send it to the drummer so I'll simply route that out. This is right after I've bought a volca again. Probably sample.
@supadom Trigger Box is a good app for getting all sorts of different rhythms going.
Audio click should work but fwiw, I sync my VKeys via MIDI clock from MIDI Flow fairly regularly without the tempo tripling thing you're experiencing.
I read this with bleary morning eyes and thought it said 'iPad and Vodka can't sync'
I'm of Polish ancestry, I don't think I'd have any problems with that kind of sync.
Audio click not only"just work",it's more reliable than any midi clock (especially on iOS).No jitter,no latency,drift...whatever.
I can't drink alcohol now due to my illness, but I so miss how it made my singing voice sound better....well to myself anyway! Lol
Here's a TB MIDI Stuff Volca Sample controller I cobbled together. It's quite ugly but I've gotten some interesting effects out of the Volca Sample using it.
Paul, thanks for making this. I've just recently purchased TB MIDI Stuff, and haven't figured out the file system yet. If I open this template in TB MIDI Stuff, can you tell me how to save it in there? I can't figure out the difference between pages and snapshots (admittedly I haven't read the manual yet).
@Seangarland You just open in with TB MIDI Stuff from the link and it will open up into the TB MIDI Stuff app. To save it, you'll need to hit the magnifying glass and then the "i" with the circle around it next to the name. When you want to load it up again, hit the "+" next to the magnifying glass and look under Canvas Snapshot Library Instrument to select it. A canvas is made up of one or more pages. Use the arrows in the menu to navigate between pages.
Thanks Paul. Great instructions, worked perfectly. I'll fire this up later.
Indeed. Plus, you can mess with it. Put, eg 16 notes into it and then control/create the rhythms by sending it different rhythmic pulses.
Yep just plugged my volca sample into my iPhone and fed it a pattern from nanostudio. Worked but was a bit wonky (still stable but though), probably due to sending it a snare drum rather than a pulse you could just sample the sync out waveform and chuck it into whatever app you want to use as your clock sync (eg loopy).
Yeah, a snare might be the worst sound to do this with.
A MobMuPlat patch for Volca Sample which can be used to play a Volca Sample harmonically via the MobMuPlat app. The original Pd patch was created by Filipe Teixeira to convert incoming midi notes to set the correct speed for the pitch of the samples assuming middle C with a speed of zero.
You'll need to setup the incoming and outgoing midi in the settings of MobMuPlat. The Volca Sample uses midi channels 1-10. I've found Genome and SunVox both do a good job of routing all the notes to their appropriate channels. You can also use an app like Midflow to aggregate the midi out from several apps to forward them onto MobMuPlat and then from MobMuPlat to your Volca Sample.
The Korg sync kontrol app is getting link support too soon
